Book excerpt: Mochlos is an islet now separated from the north coast of Crete by a few meters of shallow sea, and occupied in the Minoan period by a small town and its cemetery. This is the definitive account of excavations conduced under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens in 1908, and focuses on 24 tombs including chamber tombs, cist graves lined with slabs, burials in holes, pithos burials, and an internment in a rock cave. Most of the graves date to MM III and LM I. The remains from the town are not published in this volume. Finds included a large amount of Minoan jewelry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explorations in the Island of Mochlos This book is a report of the excavations at Mochlos, off the coast of Crete, which I conducted in the spring and summer of 1908. The expense of the work was borne jointly by friends of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, which obtained the concession from the Cretan authorities, and by myself. The objects which I was allowed to take out of Crete are in the Museum at Boston. The expense of this publication is borne by the School at Athens. A brief report on the work in the town of Mochlos appeared in the American Journal of Archaeology, Vol. XIII, 1909, pp. 273-303. I wish to give hearty thanks to the many friends who have helped me in various ways. Among these I would mention especially the two Cretan Ephors, Doctor Hatzidakis and Doctor Xanthoudides, Mr. B. H. Hill, the Director of the School at Athens, Mr. Gardiner M. Lane, the President of the Trustees of the Museum, Sir Arthur Evans, Miss Edith H. Hall, and the Committee on Publications of the School at Athens, Professor G. H. Chase, Professor J. R. Wheeler, and Professor H. N. Fowler. Miss Hall has read the manuscript and has offered many valuable suggestions. The members of the Committee have read both manuscript and proof and have aided me greatly by their advice and counsel. Book excerpt: This book focuses on three important British travellers to Crete during the 18th and 19th centuries to establish whether or not they made any significant contribution to the field of research with regard to the archaeological heritage of Bronze Age Crete. It is an attempt to bring these ‘lost pioneers’ of antiquity to the fore and to recognize their efforts as part of the foundation of the discovery of the island’s Bronze Age archaeology prior to the ground-breaking excavations of Sir Arthur Evans. The three travellers examined here are Richard Pococke (1704–65), Robert Pashley (1805–59) and Thomas Spratt (1811–88). Having dealt with the terms that these travellers used in describing ancient remains, the book looks briefly at the background to Bronze Age Crete itself. Thereafter the development from antiquarianism into archaeology is followed to establish the motives behind these travellers’ wanderings in Crete. This also involves a discussion of other British travellers to Crete and problems they may have encountered with an island in the throes of Ottoman turbulence. Using their published journals, the author has followed the footsteps of Pococke, Pashley and Spratt to see what they may have discovered, and compared their written accounts with what is physically there today. The results are most intriguing.

This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late Bronze Age Aegean cooking vessels illuminate prehistoric cultures, foodways, social interactions, and communication systems. While many scholars have focused on the utility of painted fineware vessels for chronological purposes, the contributors to this volume maintain that cooking wares have the potential to answer not only chronological but also economic, political, and social questions when analysed and contrasted with assemblages from different sites or chronological periods. The text is dedicated entirely to prehistoric cooking vessels, compiles evidence from a wide range of Greek sites and incorporates new methodologies and evidence. The contributors utilise a wide variety of analytical approaches and demonstrate the impact that cooking vessels can have on the archaeological interpretation of sites and their inhabitants. These sites include major Late Bronze Age citadels and smaller settlements throughout the Aegean and surrounding Mediterranean area, including Greece, the islands, Crete, Italy, and Cyprus. In particular, contributors highlight socio-economic connections by examining the production methods, fabrics and forms of cooking vessels. Recent improvements in excavation techniques, advances in archaeological sciences, and increasing attention to socioeconomic questions make this is an opportune time to renew conversations about and explore new approaches to cooking vessels and what they can teach us.
