Book excerpt: The history of the American West has usually been seen from the perspective of American expansion. Drawing on previously unexplored primary sources, James E. Officer has now produced a major work that traces the Hispanic roots of southern Arizona and northern Sonora—one which presents the Spanish and Mexican rather than Anglo point of view. Officer records the Hispanic presence from the earliest efforts at colonization on Spain’s northwestern frontier through the Spanish and Mexican years of rule, thus providing a unique reference on Southwestern history. The heart of the work centers on the early nineteenth century. It explores subjects such as the constant threat posed by hostile Apaches, government intrigue and revolution in Sonora and the provincias internas, and patterns of land ownership in villages such as Tucson and Tubac. Also covered are the origins of land grants in present-day southern Arizona and the invasion of southern Arizona by American “49ers” as seen from the Mexican point of view. Officer traces kinship ties of several elite families who ruled the frontier province over many generations—men and women whose descendants remain influential in Sonora and Arizona today.

What constituted 'Yaquiness' in Pascua was mainly a common language, a shared historical tradition, and an aberrant form of Catholic Christianity laced with Yaqui concepts. This clearly and concisely written book is very important in its own terms as an early example of the use of life histories in ethnology and as a significant contribution to Yaqui studies."—Choice "Spicer's methodology included biography as a means to better understand Yaqui behaviors, choices, and attitudes about others. . . . Marvelously written and should benefit a diverse readership."—Explorations in Sights and Sounds

Book excerpt: This important new collection of interdisciplinary essays sets out to chart the cultural construction of "ethnicity" as embodied in American ethnic literature. Looking at a diverse set of texts, the contributors place the subject in broad historical and dynamic contexts, focusing on the larger systems within which ethnic distinctions emerge and obtain recognition. It provides a new critical framework for understanding not only ethnic literature, but also the underlying psychological, historical, social, and cultural forces. Table of Contents: On the Fourth of July in Sitka, Ishmael Reed. Introduction: The Invention of Ethnicity, Werner Sollors. An American Writer, Richard Rodriguez. Book excerpt: Charles Montagu Doughty's Travels in Arabia Deserta (1888) is remarkable for its scientific evelations and brilliantly unique style—an artful combination of Arabic and English syntax and diction that rendered a foreign way of life and thought and depicted a distant landscape of stark, barren beauty. The ten original essays in this book examine many aspects of Arabia Deserta, including its Victorian characteristics and aesthetics; its blend of fact and fantasy; its portrayal of Arab society and of Doughty himself; and the accuracy of its geographical, geological, archaeological, historical, and ethnographical observations. Additionally, the book's introduction and two bibliographies probe Arabia Deserta's reception, unique position in the genre of travel literature, and bibliographical history. During the grueling twenty-one-month journey narrated in Arabia Deserta, Doughty endured periods of sickness and near-famine, a series of treacherous guides, attack by a mob, and virtual imprisonment by a corrupt Turkish commandant. Celebrating this epic of scholarship and survival, Explorations in Doughty's "Arabia Deserta" maps the contours of a work that T. E. Lawrence, who had followed Doughty's path to Arabia, called "a book not like other books, but something particular, a bible of its kind."

Yet until Stephen Clingman's study of her work, few will have been aware of how deeply it has responded to the history of South Africa over the past forty years.;This study traces that history. Drawing out the central themes of her work, the book follows a developing consciousness of history through Gordimer's novels, to contribute towards a history of consciousness in South Africa. Major periods and events are covered, from the political triumph of the National Party in 1948 to the vibrant social and political world of the fifties; from the Sharpeville massacre of 1960 to the Soweto Revolt of 1976, and beyond.;For Gordimer's many readers this book will provide an illuminating guide to an author whose work mirrors and reflects the turbulence of South African history as well as of our own times.;Nadine Gordimer's novels include "The Conservationist", joint winner of the 1974 Booker Prize, "Burger's Daughter", "July's People", "A Sport of Nature" and "My Son's Story". Among her collections of short stories are "A Soldier's Embrace", "Something O
