Book excerpt: This volume is a critical and objective study of the contemporary college student athlete. Framed around the process of recruitment, transition, and support of student athletes in higher education, the volume is a response to societal pressures to reform college athletics. Driven by publicity and the potential for revenue gains, colleges and universities have invested heavily in developing athletic programs, coaches, and facilities. Yet few resources are invested strategically in the personal and intellectual development of student athletes. Written by a team of authors with first-hand experience working with student athletes and transitional programs, the volume argues that institutional attention must be directed at caring for the personal and intellectual growth of student athletes. Highlighting some best-practice curricula and exploring the psychological issues surrounding participating in often highly-competitive athletics, the authors consistently conclude that institutional responsibility is of the utmost and immediate importance. Authors also consider the unique settings of student athletes in community and private liberal arts colleges, demonstrating the broad interest in athletics and institutional competition. The result is an important volume that will be of interest to those who counsel and administer intercollegiate athletic programs, faculty and researchers looking for insightful baseline data on the contemporary student athlete, and those concerned with transitional programs and the future of higher education.

Book Synopsis Relations Among Athletic Identity Foreclosure, Career Maturity, and Career Exploration in College Student-athletes by : Christine M. Caldwell
Download or read book Relations Among Athletic Identity Foreclosure, Career Maturity, and Career Exploration in College Student-athletes written by Christine M. Caldwell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationship between athletic identity foreclosure and career development (i.e., career maturity and career exploration) through the use of a sport-specific measure of athletic identity foreclosure. Student-athletes (N = 280) from colleges and universities in the United States provided demographic information and completed the Career Maturity Inventory - Form C, the Career Exploration Survey – Revised, and the Sport-Specific Measure of Identity Foreclosure. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that athletic identity foreclosure was inversely related both to career maturity and career exploration, suggesting that student-athletes who strongly and exclusively commit to their role as athletes fail to explore other non-sport-related career options. Additionally, student-athletes with high levels of athletic identity foreclosure may be less willing and capable of efficiently engaging in vocational tasks than studentathletes who are not in foreclosed in their athletic identity. Limitations of the study, areas for future research, and applied implications are discussed.

Book Synopsis The Relationship Between Professional Development Engagement and Career Decision Making Self-efficacy, and Athletic Identity in College Students Vs. College Student Athletes by : Ashley E. Janosko
Download or read book The Relationship Between Professional Development Engagement and Career Decision Making Self-efficacy, and Athletic Identity in College Students Vs. College Student Athletes written by Ashley E. Janosko and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been limited research that focuses on Division III college student athletes and the career development process. Although previous researchers have studied the relationship between athletic identity and career decision making self-efficacy (CDMSE) among college student athletes, results have been inconsistent, with different researchers finding inverse, positive, or no relationships between variables. In addition, numerous researchers have examined career development among college student athletes. However, there has been no research to date that studies professional development engagement (PDE) and college student athletes. In addition, the majority of career development studies involving college student athletes have focused on either Division I or II schools. To address this gap, the current research project utilized three variables (athletic identity, CDMSE, and PDE) to try to gain an understanding of factors that may impact the career development process for traditional age college students (College Student Non-Athletes; CSNA) and college student-athletes in a Division III school. Chickering’s Identity Development Theory was used as a lens to examine identity development among the populations of interest. The researcher conducted a quantitative study at an NCAA Division III university in the northeastern region of the United States to examine the relationship between PDE and CDMSE among college student athletes (research question 1). Furthermore, this research was designed to determine if the association between PDE and CDMSE changed when controlling for athletic identity (research question 2). Lastly, the author examined this same set of variables and controls (the association between PDE and CDMSE when controlling for athletic identity) to see if there was a significant difference between college student athletes vs. CNSAs (research question 3). NCAA Division III student athletes and CSNA completed an online survey consisting of three instruments (Athletic Identity Measurement Scale, Career Decision Making Short-Form, and Professional Development Engagement Scale) and a demographic questionnaire. The results suggest that higher levels of PDE lead to higher level of CDMSE, and that higher levels of athletic identity were related to higher levels of CDMSE when controlling for PDE. Furthermore, in both the student athlete and the CNSA samples, there was no significant relationship difference in the association between PDE and CDMSE when accounting for athletic identity. Additionally, implications for research, practice, and teaching are discussed.
Book Synopsis The Moral Career of the Student Athlete by : Luis Felipe Restrepo
Download or read book The Moral Career of the Student Athlete written by Luis Felipe Restrepo and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is a critical examination of the transitional experience from high school to college for a group of student athletes from the California State University, Chico athletic program, during the 2013-14 academic school year. The research uses interviews, discourse analysis, and the photo-elicitation methods to collect data to better understand what that experience was for the group. In-depth analysis looks at change, the cultural setting inside school and the societal practices that influence identity and the transitional experience of these individuals. As a current collegiate coach, I have spent the last 15 seasons working closely with student athletes and observing their transitional experience from home to college athletics and university settings. Throughout my coaching career I have noticed that a student`s transition to college can be one of the most transformational experiences in his or her life. Over the years, one major theme has stood out as a key component to the transitional experience. A key factor is the idea of change, and what change can mean to each individual student or group as a whole. I take a critical look at how students are actually experiencing change, and what their perceptions are of the changes that occur internally as a result of their new environment. Furthermore, I look closely at the institutional environment itself as it directly or indirectly affects the student athlete through its institutional practices and perceptions of the student athlete. In addition I go in depth as to what the experience looks like across gender, race and ethnicity. How is it experienced by student athletes of color? And how can the findings from my dissertation be used to understand school to college transitions for all students?
Book Synopsis Effectiveness and Causal Mechanisms for a 'life After Sport' Career Development Intervention with Collegiate Student-athletes by : Matthew B. Vaartstra
Download or read book Effectiveness and Causal Mechanisms for a 'life After Sport' Career Development Intervention with Collegiate Student-athletes written by Matthew B. Vaartstra and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is comprised of two studies based on data collected from NCAA Division I student-athletes comparing treatment and intervention groups during a 9-week career development intervention. Study 1 examined intervention effectiveness comparing psychosocial and behavioral outcomes over time, and Study 2 investigated why the intervention was effective by examining psychosocial and contextual factors as potential mediators and/or moderators of the relationship between the intervention and behavioral outcomes. Repeated-measures analysis of variance results from Study 1 indicated that the career development intervention significantly enhanced career decision-making self-efficacy, positive emotions, identified regulation, integrated regulation, self-reported career development behaviors, and stage of change; and significantly decreased amotivation towards career development. Results from Study 2 indicated that career decision-making self-efficacy, identified regulation, and integrated regulation significantly mediated the relationship between the intervention and several of the targeted psychosocial and behavioral outcomes. Intervention engagement was found to be a significant moderator of the relationship between the intervention and several targeted behavioral outcomes. The discussion focuses on the impact of the career development intervention on student-athletes and identifying the psychosocial and contextual factors that are critical to the effectiveness of the intervention. Suggestions are made for maximizing the effectiveness career development interventions targeted towards student-athletes and potential directions for future research on student-athlete career development interventions.
Book Synopsis Equity-Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions by : Erik M. Hines
Download or read book Equity-Based Career Development and Postsecondary Transitions written by Erik M. Hines and published by IAP. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former First Lady, Michelle Obama believes that every individual should have some type of postsecondary education or training beyond high school to achieve economic and personal success (Reach Higher Initiative, Better Make Room, 2019). Educational attainment (e.g., a high school diploma, college degree, or postsecondary training) provides career opportunities for advancement into leadership positions and benefits such as health insurance and retirement (Heckman, 2000). Additionally, an individual with a college degree can make over one million dollars more over a lifetime in salary than someone with a high school diploma (Carnevale, Cheah, & Hanson, 2015). Acquiring a college degree can lead to employment opportunities and is considered an asset in the U.S. economy (Washington, 2010). However, certain populations encounter barriers to attaining an education, particularly a postsecondary education, leading to a disparity in receiving the aforementioned benefits. Some of these populations include African American students, LGBTQ students, and students with disabilities. There is a dearth of information and research on providing guidance on implementation, research, and best practices in equity-based career development, college readiness, and successful postsecondary transitions for minoritized, at risk, or vulnerable populations. The editors of this volume invited authors with research and practice expertise around various student populations in preparing them for college and career readiness as well as postsecondary transitions. This book is the first of its kind to discuss career development and postsecondary transitions from an access and equity perspective. Further, this text serves as a call to action to ensure the United States’ most vulnerable populations has an opportunity to successfully transition into multiple postsecondary options after high school.
