Rendre les crises responsables des violences antijuives, c'est oublier qu'il y eut de l'antisémitisme sans crise et des crises sans antisémitisme. L'idée selon laquelle les juifs serviraient de victime expiatoire en raison de leurs différences ne tient pas ; la différence n'est pas la cause de la haine, elle est sa conséquence. La théorie du bouc émissaire est un plaidoyer en faveur des bourreaux. Ce mécanisme transforme les criminels en victimes d'une pulsion qui les dépasse. Contrairement à ce que prétend cette conception de l'antisémitisme, les meurtriers savent ce qu'ils font. C'est pourquoi on peut analyser les raisons qui ont conduit des hommes ordinaires à commettre des crimes inouïs. Quelques grands penseurs ont eu recours à la théorie du bouc émissaire : Durkheim, Freud, Braudel, Sartre ou René Girard l'ont invoquée pour expliquer les violences antijuives. Ces penseurs ont un point commun : ils interprètent l'antisémitisme comme une manifestation de l'irrationalité de l'homme. Dévoiler les failles de ces approches théoriques, c'est aussi révéler les limites d'une certaine manière de pratiquer les sciences sociales. Car, si la sociologie peut expliquer l'antisémitisme, l'antisémitisme peut, en retour, nous aider à comprendre la sociologie.
