Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On July 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI issued his long awaited motu proprio, Summorum Pontificum. In this document he granted permission "to celebrate Mass following the typical edition of the Roman Missal promulgated by Bl. John XXIII in 1962 as an extraordinary form of the Liturgy of the Church." Because of this motu proprio, there has been much interest in viewing the Paul VI missal as a continuation of the Bl. John XXIII missal. Understanding the earlier ritual expression is essential if we are to deeply understand the ordinary expression of the Mass of Paul VI. This book is a collection essays from the proceedings of the 11th International CIEL (International Centre for Liturgical Studies) Colloquium held at Merton College, Oxford, September of 2006. CIEL is an academic school of Liturgy founded in 1994 in Paris to form an academic school to instruct priests, seminarians, religious and the laity in the riches of Catholic liturgical history and development of the liturgy.

Book Synopsis Interpretation in/of the Seventeenth Century by : Pierre Zoberman
Download or read book Interpretation in/of the Seventeenth Century written by Pierre Zoberman and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretation in/of the Seventeenth Century explores interpretation according to, and by, the seventeenth century, namely how intellectuals and officials conceived of interpretation, and how they read their world and its relationship to the past, and of the seventeenth century. As such, the volume examines both temporal relationships, such as current interpretations of the seventeenth century or interpretation of itself and the past by the seventeenth century, and transversal relations, including practices of reading, crossings from one genre to another, and translation. The comparative conception underlying the collection’s three main sections (“Culture and Interpretation”, “Interpretation and Literature”, and “Shifts and Perspectives”) allows for an in-depth examination of what could be meant in seventeenth-century France by interpretation—between exegesis and translation—and what interpretive practices characterized the culture of the period. What may the ceremonies organized on a more or less grandiose scale and with more or less clearly visible programmes by the Crown or various institutions have meant for the organizers and their audiences, given the material and perspectival limitations faced by most of the viewers and participants and the difficulty to read the allegorical-symbolic representations? Science and belief play an important role in deciphering representation: discourses on optics and ghosts stories alike help shed light on the evolution of interpretation, as concept and practice, throughout this period. Literature, in the modern sense of the word, is given particular attention in the volume. Several chapters examine the connection of literary forms to conceptions of interpretation: how did topical plays, staging contemporary events, help shape the interpretation of current affairs and further political agendas? More generally, how do dramaturgy, theatrical production and acting contribute to an understanding of the ways in which the participants in early modern European culture viewed their own time, and of the ways in which the period can be interpreted today? And can early-modern accounts of literature and society be read as signposts for a modern understanding of the period? To these and other, related, questions, the study of translation and translators in the seventeenth century and of modern translations for audiences outside of France (in particular for Molière), as well as an examination of adaptations of seventeenth-century works for other media today, bring novel perspectives.

Book Synopsis The Fabrication of Louis XIV by : Peter Burke
Download or read book The Fabrication of Louis XIV written by Peter Burke and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis XIV was a man like any other, but the money and attention lavished on his public image by the French government transformed him into a godlike figure. In this engrossing book, an internationally respected historian gives an account of contemporary representations of Louis XIV and shows how the making of the royal image illuminates the relationship between art and power. Images of Louis XIV included hundreds of oil paintings and engravings, three-hundred-odd medals struck to commemorate the major events of the reign, sculptures, and bronzes, as well as plays, ballets (in which the king himself sometimes appeared on stage), operas, odes, sermons, official newspapers and histories, fireworks, fountains, and tapestries. Drawing on an analysis of these representations as well as on surviving documentary sources, Peter Burke shows the conscious attempt to "invent" the image of the king and reveals how the supervision of the royal image was entrusted to a commitee, the so-called small academy. This book is not only a fascinating chronological study of the mechanics of the image-making of a king over the course of a seventy-year reign but is also an investigation into the genre of cultural construction. Burke discusses the element of propaganda implicit in image-making, the manipulation of seventeenth-century media of communication (oral, visual, and textual) and their codes (literary and artistic), and the intended audience and its response. He concludes by comparing and contrasting Louis's public image with that of other rulers ranging from Augustus to contemporary American presidents.
