Book Synopsis Ownership, Narrative, Things by : Dave Cowan
Download or read book Ownership, Narrative, Things written by Dave Cowan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a case study of a low-cost home ownership initiative at the margins of renting and owning provided by social landlords – known as shared ownership – to challenge everyday assumptions held about the ‘social’ and the ‘legal’ in property. The authors provide a study of the construction of property ownership, from the creation of this idea through to the present day, and offer a fresh consideration of key issues surrounding property, ownership, and the social. Analysing a diverse range of sources (from archives to micro-blogs, observation of housing providers, and interviews with shared owners), the authors explain the significance of the things (from the formal documents like leases, to odd materials like sweet wrappers and cigarette butts) commonly found in the narratives around shared ownership which are used to construct it as private ownership in everyday life. Ultimately, they uncover how this dream of ownership can become tarnished when people’s identities as ‘owners’ come under threat, and as such, these findings will provide fascinating insight into the intricacies of so-called home ownership for scholars of Law, Criminology, and Sociology.
Book Synopsis Lenin's Political Thought by : Neil Harding
Download or read book Lenin's Political Thought written by Neil Harding and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caricatured as a superhuman idol in the former Communist states, the Russian revolutionary socialist V. I. Lenin has long been reversely caricatured in the West as an authoritarian elitist. In this brilliant, carefully researched analysis, Neil Harding upends these traditional Cold War interpretations of Lenin's thought and activity. Harding shows how Lenin's flexible and continuously changing theoretical, strategic, and tactical insights were firmly grounded in the emancipatory potential for working-class revolution in Russia and around the world. Neil Harding is an internationally renowned scholar of Soviet history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One Blood offers a wealth of ethnographic material, skillfully using traditional Jamaican images and expressions to present a coherent and systematic depiction of the Jamaican body, of how it works and of how health is maintained. Sobo explains some of the more complex issues of medical anthropology in a clear and accessible fashion and shows how gender and kinship tensions are expressed through culturally constructed syndromes. The book explores the ways in which the body serves as a medium for the expression of ideas about the social and moral order. Childhood socializations and ideas about gender relations, kinship, social obligations, sorcery, and deceit are investigated in association with beliefs about nutrition, procreation, sexuality, cleanliness, bodily flow, and sickness.
