Book excerpt: This book presents a set of low-cost physics experiments, making use of the new technologies available (data collection and analysis systems by computers, Internet, video, commercial electronics, smartphones, etc.), while highlighting the methodological aspects of physics and science in general. The projects are aimed at university students of science and engineering, although some may be used in high schools. The experiments would enable students to answer the questions: How do we know this? Why do we believe in that? These questions illustrate the nature of scientific thinking process. This book is complemented by the site www.fisicarecreativa.com, where several of the projects presented here were carried out by students from different universities. Book Synopsis Understanding Evolution in Darwin's "Origin" by : Maria Elice Brzezinski Prestes

This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to encourage the reading of "On the Origin of Species" and to include it in the teaching of evolution. With a comprehensive overview of the development of Darwin's theory, the volume provides relevant aspects of Darwin's life and work in connection with the broader context of his time. The historical and philosophical analysis, mirrored in the socio-cultural scope, enables the diachronic reading of the text. It is built on various sources of historians and philosophers of science and sheds fresh light on them. Its uniqueness is the broad structure that covers four parts: the pre-Darwinian concepts of species changes; some key elements of Darwin's pursuit of the causes of evolution, from his voyage on Beagle to the publication of his groundbreaking work; chapter-by-chapter analysis of the "Origin"; and subsequent developments in evolutionary thought. This book is of interest to undergraduate and graduate students, scholars in history, philosophy, and sociology of science and science education, as well as the general public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by the latest research in the fields of second language acquisition and applied linguistics, El español y la lingüística aplicada responds to the central questions that lie at the heart of learning Spanish as a second or foreign language. What does it mean to know a language? Can technology help second language learners? How does studying abroad promote language acquisition? Framing chapters in terms of these and other critical areas of inquiry, Robert J. Blake and Eve C. Zyzik examine the linguistic challenges and pitfalls involved in Spanish-language learning and delve into practical implications for students and teachers. Written entirely in Spanish, some chapters focus on specific areas of Spanish grammar that tend to pose difficulty for learners, while others explore broad pedagogical themes related to the concept of proficiency, the nature of input, and the impact of learning context. Each chapter ends with a series of guided questions for reflection and further research. Designed to address the pre-service training needs of Spanish language professionals, El español y la lingüística aplicada will also be of interest to anyone wishing to develop linguistic expertise in this important world language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laying down a new path in biology teaching, this book offers an organic alternative to traditional biology instruction. Read how to enact an adaptive learning environment where meaning isn’t transmitted or discovered, but co-constructed. Learn how to provoke understanding with just diagrams and dialogue. Learn how to see with systems theory & variation theory. Inside you’ll find: The recursive teaching model. An innovative evidence-and-theory informed model for co-constructing meaning with students rather than just telling them or having them discover alone. It gives a novel vision of what teaching entails; a way of seeing and being in the classroom. Detailed examples of my lessons. I show the exact diagrams I’ve drawn in a lesson and explain how I’ve drawn them step by step. I show the actual questions I’ve asked students, at what point in the lesson, and why. A theory-informed how-to guide for planning explanations. I show how to explain biological concepts by applying the variation theory of learning and enactive cognitive science. This simple heuristic will revolutionise your students’ understanding while hugely cutting your planning time. A theory-informed how-to guide for encouraging conversation in lessons. You never know how students will interpret a new explanation so conversing with them is essential. I show, using a new model for conversation, how to keep everyone on the same page. Through examples from my lessons, I show the types of questions that allow a conversation to develop, without them becoming too open and inefficient. Keep your classroom conversation on point while also receiving rich feedback on what your students understand. A theory-informed how-to guide for co-constructing stock and flow diagrams. These diagrams have vastly increased my students’ understanding and have also made teaching more fun and conversational. I show exactly how to read, design, and teach them, with detailed lesson examples. There’s also an appendix of 37 of these diagrams I’ve used with my classes. A new model of curricular content. I show that the curriculum is not just a list of content of equal weight. There are key ideas that give meaning to the rest of the curriculum. I explain the concept of “metacontent” and show exactly how I apply it in detailed examples. o The first type of metacontent I explain is a set of systems principles that I share with students and discuss during every topic. These unifying principles avoid the feeling that biology is just a lot of facts to learn. o The second type is understanding understanding itself. I share a taxonomy of understanding that allows students to grasp what I expect of them in every topic. Rather than success criteria, which change for every topic, this framework gets to the heart of biological understanding and how to get there. I provide example sentences for each level of understanding, example questions I’ve asked to test my students’ understanding, and example answers my students have given. A way of seeing and being. Rather than a training manual with activities to follow, this book provides teachers with a new conception of teaching, learning, and acting together in the classroom. Yet, rather than being an academic book of just abstract theory, it thoroughly exemplifies all the ideas in practice from real lessons in real teaching contexts. Laying down a new path in biology teaching, this book will change how you perceive and act in teaching and learning.

How to teach and learn architectural history? To answer this question, eight important panoramic books on Brazilian architecture, produced at different times in the twentieth century and early twenty-first, are revisited. The organizer and her research team explored the possibility of combining quantitative measurement extracted from these books with interpretations of a more subjective nature, revealing complex, non-intuitive, and unexpected paradoxes, shaping some of the "canon's voids". The book presents a methodological set of tools for the critical revision of repeated ideas and axioms converted into canons, allowing for questioning, and opening new paths. The tables and graphs produced in the book are freely interpreted and counterpointed by the views of eighteen contributing authors, ranging from young researchers to renowned guest experts. (Marcio Cotrim, Prof. Dr. Arquiteto, FAU-UFBA).
