Book excerpt: A solar pond can be used as a thermal energy source provided that convective instabilities do not occur. This paper experimentally examines the stability of a fluid layer with nonlinear salinity profiles. A nonlinear salt profile was set up in a 0.7m x 0.7m x 1.4m deep tank, and the water was heated by a solar radiation simulator. Three experiments were conducted, each over a time scale of about one week. An instability was produced in two of the experiments. The instabilities occurred at the location of the weakest salinity gradient, and were confined to a narrow depth, as predicted by theory. A local length scale was used to produce a stability parameter, the ratio of thermal to solute Rayleigh numbers. It is shown that for nonlinear solute gradients, the appropriate length scale is based on the radius of curvature of the salinity distribution. With this choice of a length scale, good agreement was found between theory and experiment for the onset of an instability. However, only fair agreement was obtained for the disturbance frequency.

Book excerpt: Solar Energy Index is an index of resources dealing with solar energy, including archival materials from the International Solar Energy Society collection; references to articles in major solar journals; patents and pamphlets; National Technical Information Service reports; unbound conference proceedings; and other assorted reports. Both theoretical and ""how-to-do-it"" publications are well represented. This book places particular emphasis on terrestrial solar thermal and photovoltaic applications of solar energy. Subjects are classified according to physics, terrestrial wind, collectors, space heating and cooling, economics, materials, distillation, thermal-electric power systems, photoelectricity, solar furnaces, cooking, biological applications, water heaters, photochemistry, energy storage, mechanical devices, evaporation, sea power, space flight applications, and industrial applications. Topics covered range from wind energy and bioconversion to ocean thermal energy conversion, heliohydroelectric power plants, solar cells, turbine generation systems, thermionic converters, batteries and fuel cells, and pumps and engines. This monograph will be of interest to government officials and policymakers concerned with solar energy.

Book excerpt: Energy, Resources and Environment documents the first U.S.-China Conference and discusses the concerns about the world's energy situation, such as its resource, environmental effects, and possible alternative sources. The book is comprised of 72 chapters including the keynote address, five lecture papers, and 66 technical papers that are organized according to its contents, specifically the type of energy it discusses. The text begins with the keynote address, and then discusses the plenary and technical papers. The plenary papers discuss the importance of energy, resources, environment, and future development. The technical papers cover the technological advancement of alternative energy source and their application. The conference covers the following theme: chemical fuels, coal energy, electric power systems, energy conservation, geothermal and other natural energy, hydropower, ice storage for cooling, solar energy, wind energy, economic aspect of energy utilization, and impact of energy on the environment. The book will be of great interest to individuals concerned with the development of alternative energy sources. Researchers whose work involves alternative energy will be able to make use of this book as a reference material.
