Book excerpt: Experimental investigations and analyses have been performed to study the behavior of granular materials with respect to their nonassociated flow and instability under certain loading conditions. All experiments have been performed in triaxial compression and extension at high as well as at low confining pressures. Major topics that were studied include: strain localization in triaxial extension tests; drained and undrained stress-strain and strength behavior from low to high pressures in triaxial extension and compression; instability of granular materials at high pressures in triaxial compression and extension; the determination of Skempton's pore pressure parameter B at high pressures; strain rate effects of granular materials at high pressures in drained and undrained conditions; examination of the effective stress principle at high pressures; particle breakage at high pressures; behavior of sand in one- dimensional compression tests at very high pressures; determination of values of K (sub o), the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, at high pressures; evaluation of the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio at high pressure levels; correlations of high pressure soil behavior with stress-dilatancy, critical state, and input energy; static instability and liquefaction of loose fine sandy slopes; stability of granular materials in post peak softening regime; instability of dilating sand; and creep effects on static and cyclic instability of granular soils. Frictional materials, High pressures, Instability, Nonassociated flow, Pore pressures, Stress-strain behavior.

Book excerpt: This study presents the results of an extensive experimental investigation of granular materials at high pressures. Among the many types of experiments performed are drained and undrained triaxial compression and extension tests with an overall confining pressure range of 0.25 to 68.9 MPa. One-dimensional compression tests up to 900 MPa axial stress level were also performed. Major topics that were studied include: strain localization in triaxial extension tests; drained and undrained stress-strain and strength behavior from low to high pressures in triaxial extension and compression; instability of granular materials at high pressures in triaxial compression and extension; the determination of Skempton's pore pressure parameter B at high pressures; strain rate effects of granular materials at high pressures in drained and undrained conditions; examination of the effective stress principle at high pressures; particle breakage at high pressures; behavior of sands in one-dimensional compression tests at very high pressures; determination of values of k sub o, the coefficient of earth pressure at rest, at high pressures; evaluation of the elastic modulus and Poisson's ratio at high pressure levels; and correlations of high pressure soil behavior with stress-dilatancy, critical state, and input energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the experimental investigations being reported here were to further study the factors that control the stability and instability of frictional materials. The study is divided into two parts: (1) Conditions for Instability, in which a coarse sand was tested at a total of three void ratios to study effects of density as well as additional aspects of instability of granular materials. These experiments were conducted in high pressure triaxial equipment (cell pressures up to 70 MPa). (2) Creep in Sand, in which a fundamental study of creep and relaxation of granular materials was performed, because time-dependent behavior has considerable influence on the stability of granular materials. The sand employed in the experiments had weak, easily crushed grains, which typically exhibit considerable creep. The experiments were performed under drained conditions in order to maintain a constant stress state. Various stress states were used to study whether the plastic potential can be used for prediction of the relative magnitudes of the inelastic creep strain increments, and to examine the effect of creep on the outward movement of the plastic yield surface. This in turn will control the conditions for instability.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive failure has been a classical problem in the field of geotechnical engineering and has attracted considerable attention in connection with slope stability and foundation problems. It is associated with strain localization or shear banding and is also related to damage in material structures. As knowledge of the progressive failure mechanism increases, it is now necessary to establish effective communications between researchers and engineers. The International Symposium on Deformation and Progressive Failure in Geomechanics provided an opportunity for discussing recent advances in this area. A total of 136 papers were contributed from 22 countries. As well as these, the symposium proceedings also contain 8 interim technical reports on the subject by the members of the Asian Technical Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and the Japanese Geotechnical Society National Committee on Progressive Failure in Geo-structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constitutive modelling of granulate materials has achieved significant progress in recent times although some challenging problems still remain to be solved. Many of the 35 contributions in this volume are devoted to modelling but there are also papers investigating the phenomena to be modelled. For instance, there are reviews on several aspects of the behaviour of granulates which are mere material properties while other aspects are related to the ill-posedness of the corresponding boundary value problems. The work provides a comprehensive and up to date treatise on the theory of plasticity in granular materials, together with a great number of solution methods and applications. The volume is intended for researchers and practising engineers who wish to enhance their knowledge in this rapidly expanding field.

Book excerpt: Granular or particulate materials arise in almost every aspect of our lives, including many familiar materials such as tea, coffee, sugar, sand, cement and powders. At some stage almost every industrial process involves a particulate material, and it is usually the cause of the disruption to the smooth running of the process. In the natural environment, understanding the behaviour of particulate materials is vital in many geophysical processes such as earthquakes, landslides and avalanches. This book is a collection of current research from some of the major contributors in the topic of modelling the behaviour of granular materials. Papers from every area of current activity are included, such as theoretical, numerical, engineering and computational approaches. This book illustrates the numerous diverse approaches to one of the outstanding problems of modern continuum mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book addresses instability and bifurcation phenomena in frictional contact problems. The treatment of this subject has its roots in previous studies of instability and bifurcation in elastic, thermoelastic or elastic-plastic bodies, and in previous mathematical, mechanical and computational studies of unilateral problems. The salient feature of this book is to put together and develop concepts and tools for stability and bifurcation studies in mechanics, taking into account the inherent non-smoothness and non-associativity (non-symmetry) of unilateral frictional contact laws. The mechanical foundations, the mathematical theory and the computational algorithms for such studies are developed along six chapters written by the lecturers of a CISM course. Those concepts and tools are illustrated not only with enlightening academic examples but also with some demanding industrial applications, related, namely, to the automotive industry.
