Book excerpt: Applying the technique of the analogical burner (multimicrojet burner) it is possible to measure the heat transferred from the burning zone to the surface of the burner which plays the role of the regressing surface of a burning solid propellant. The study has been achieved in two extreme cases of burning conditions: fully individual premixed flamelets and purely individual diffusion flamelets. The burning mixture consisted of methane, oxygen and nitrogen. A theoretical interpretation is given to the experimental data. The second part of this report consists in an introduction to the comparative study of chemiluminescence and chemiionization in flames propagating in the most varied mixtures of gaseous fuels and oxidizers. Book excerpt: A study of the ignition process of a composite solid propellant (80 wt-% NH4ClO4 plus 20 wt-% P-13 resin and additives was made in a combustion chamber whose configuration resembled that of a practical solid propellant motor. A small gas rocket chamber generated high temperature gaseous products, which in turn supplied the ignition energy to the internal surface of a cylindrical thin-web, case-bonded solid propellant grain. The ignition delay, the time between igntion of the gas igniter and the first ignition of the solid propellant grain, was measured as a function of the temperature, pressure, the chemical reactivity of the hot gases, and the velocity of these gases over the solid propellant surface. The ignition times were measured by means of a strain-gage pressure transducer inserted in the solid propellant motor chambr. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the application of classical combustion theory to ignition and flame propagation in solid-solid and gas-solid systems. It presents experimental investigations in the areas of local ignition, filtration combustion, self-propagating high temperature synthesis and nanopowders protection. The authors highlight analytical formulas used in different areas of combustion in solids and propose an approach based on classical combustion theory. The book attempts to analyze the basic approaches to understanding of solid-solid and solid - gas combustion presented in contemporary literature in a unified approach based on classical combustion theory.

This book was released on 1990 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed knowledge of the gas-phase reactions which occur during propellant ignition and combustion are required to understand and model these processes. If detailed models were available, modification of propellant formulations for improved combustion behavior could be achieved with much less trail-and-error testing. Furthermore, detailed models could be used to generate simplified kinetics schemes for use in propellant models. Without a firm basis for these simplified kinetic schemes, the kinetic parameters are often adjusted to fit burning rate and ignition data; thus the propellant models are reduced to sophisticated curve fits to experimental data. The present research program, centers around the development and application of a microprobe, mass spectrometer (MPMS) system to study the gas phase chemistry of solid propellant ingredients and solid propellants during heating by a CO2 laser and during steady combustion. The MPMS system uses quartz microprobes with orifice sizes of 100 microns or less to withdraw gases from the region above the sample material. Through a two stage pumping system, the sample is delivered to a quadrupole mass spectrometer for analysis. Sampling is continuous throughout the combustion event so that species profiles of stable intermediates above the sample are obtained during the experiments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fundamental study of the non-steady combustion of solid propellants with application to rocket instability is described. A film strip of a metallized solid propellant burning in an oscillating pressure field was analyzed in order to determine the phase relationship between the imposed pressure maxima and an apparent wave of luminosity in the combustion gases. The implications of these observations as they affect the model of the burning propellant are briefly considered. Two types of experimental observation which will be used to study non-steady combustion are outlined. One method involves the measurement of the temperature of the combustion gases downstream from the flame zone. The use of a particle track method for the observation of pressure-velocity relationships in the burnt gases is also considered. (Author).

Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Book excerpt: This book provides an analysis of contemporary problems in combustion science, namely flame propagation, detonation and heterophaseous combustion based on the works of the author. The current problems in the area of gas combustion, as well as the methods allowing to calculate and estimate limiting conditions of ignition, and flame propagation on the basis of experimental results are considered. The book focuses on the virtually inaccessible works of Russian authors and will be useful for experienced students and qualified scientists in the area of experimental studies of combustion processes.
