Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scrap tires are shredded and kept in monofills as one way of disposing or storing them for further processes such as recycling. Although monofills are safer than other means of disposing tires, long-term storage in fills and stockpiles, where the shredded tires are in a compressed state, has led to incidences of tire fires. In order to safely and more efficiently manage shredded tire monofills, it is imperative to understand the heat generation process in such settings. This study is an experimental investigation performed with the overall aim of determining the directional variations of the bulk thermal conductivity of shredded tires. To approximate the situation at monofills, an experimental apparatus was designed and constructed using an open-end steel drum with a diameter of 0.28 m (11 in) and 0.85 m (33.5 in) height. Heat was generated by compression of interstitial air/voids, and temperature distribution was measured when heat was in transit across the bulk volume of shredded tires. Experiments were conducted on three shred sizes: 12.5 mm (0.5 in), 25 mm (1 in), and 150 mm (6 in) to determine thermal conductivity variations as a function of size, density and compressibility. The three shred sizes correspond to three experimental set-ups. A fourth configuration was composed of 150 mm (6 in) shred sizes with a 75 mm (3 in) covering of mine spoils to determine the contribution of mine spoils to the temperature difference, heat flux, thermal conductivity and compressibility of interstitial air of bulk shredded tires. The compression/strain of the large size tire shreds was found to be higher than that of small size tire shreds. The reloading experiment also shows that shredded tires compress less during the second round of loading (i.e., showing a low level of hysteresis), although both the first time loading and the reloading curves depict a similar non-linear stress-strain behavior. One of the ramifications of the results is the finding that the thermal conductivity of shredded tires and the heat generation process is directly proportional to the composition of the shreds, the mechanical compressibility of the shredded tires, the degree of packing, and the applied stress. The larger tire shreds show higher values for thermal conductivities than the smaller tire shreds, all other things kept constant. It was also found that temperature is highest near the middle of the tested shredded tire volume, and the temperature decreases progressively moving farther away from the center. This corroborates with findings of continuous thermo-probes measurements in the field which also show temperature increases at the middle levels of the actual tire monofills. The focus of the thesis has been on determining directional thermal conductivities due to the compressibility of the tested sizes of the shredded tires. Future research needs to be completed on the effect of other factors such as long-term moisture and leachate dynamics of the tire monofills.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental scientists and engineers are faced with the challenge of how to manage increasing amounts of solid waste. Furthermore, waste management officials are constantly faced with the question "Which option is the most appropriate one in this situation, and how does it compare to other options?" For these individuals, and for the general public, Municipal Solid Wastes: Problems and Solutions helps to answer this and other questions by presenting the issues of waste handling and disposal-from general management concepts to specific techniques. Each topic is carefully reviewed: problems are presented, and possible solutions are discussed. Legislation that affects recycling and disposal is covered.

Book excerpt: The amount and variety of waste that humanity dumps in landfill sites is nothing short of a scandal, believes Rafat Siddique, of Deemed University in Patiala, India. Instead, we ought to be building new homes out of it! Siddique shows in this important book that many non-hazardous waste materials and by-products which are landfilled, can in fact be used in making concrete and similar construction materials.

In recent years, serious consideration has been given to environmental and societal issues in the manufacturing, use, disposal, and recycling of construction materials. This book provides comprehensive and detailed analysis of the sustainability issues associated with these materials, mainly in relation to the constituent materials, processing, recycling, and lifecycle environmental impacts. The contents of each chapter reflect the individual aspects of the material that affect sustainability, such as the preservation and repair of timber, the use of cement replacements in concrete, the prevention and control of metal corrosion and the crucial role of adhesives in wood products. Provides helpful guidance on lifecycle assessment, durability, recycling, and the engineering properties of construction materials Fully updated to take on new developments, with an additional nineteen chapters added to include natural stone, polymers and plastics, and plaster products Provides essential reading for individuals at all levels who are involved in the construction and selection, assessment and use, and maintenance of materials

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) estimates that over 279 million discarded tires are being added annually to the already existing stockpile of two billion tires. Current disposal and stacking methods of waste tires are not acceptable due to the possibility of fire and health hazards. Several states and the federal government have issued legislation that encourages or mandates the recycling of discarded tires. One application where shredded tires can be used is as a lightweight fill material behind retaining walls or in highway embankments over weak or compressible soils.
