Our aim is to provide readers with the highest quality reproductions of fiction and non-fiction literature that has stood the test of time. The many thousands of books in our collection have been sourced from libraries and private collections around the world. The titles that Trieste Publishing has chosen to be part of the collection have been scanned to simulate the original. Our readers see the books the same way that their first readers did decades or a hundred or more years ago. Books from that period are often spoiled by imperfections that did not exist in the original. Imperfections could be in the form of blurred text, photographs, or missing pages. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Generally, Trieste books are purchased singly - on demand, however they may also be purchased in bulk. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for High Schools In no branch of education is this connection between knowledge and conduct or welfare more direct than in that which deals with the study of our own bodies, and of the laws and practices which must be observed in order to maintain a condition of health and activity in these bodies that is, the study of physiology and hygiene. For upon the Observation of these rules of hygiene depends the preservation of health, a first essential for usefulness as well as enjoyment in life. He can best and most intelligently observe these laws who is familiar with and understands the facts from which they are deduced, the phenomena of physiology. This study should therefore be a part of the education of each and all of us. It should be taken up in youth, for it is during this period that the organs and tissues of the body, the frame, the heart, the brain, are growing and taking on the character which they keep throughout life, and that the practices and habits which are the most deep seated and fundamental are forming. The health and character then acquired often prove the bed rock of the Whole physical, mental, and moral development. The errors committed then are often irreparable, and it is the province of our educational systems to insure that at least these errors shall not be committed through Ignorance. In preparing a text book for this purpose of general education in the schools, the point to be kept most In mind IS the unity of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Physiology The present volume is based upon a small book, entitled Directions for Class Work in Practical Physiology, which was published in 1901, and consisted chiefly of an account of the methods employed in the study of muscle and nerve physiology and of the heart, in so far as these could be illustrated in preparations from the frog. To that account have now been added descriptions of such other methods of Experimental Physiology as may be performed by the student either in class or individually, although a few which are given can - at least in this country - only take the form of demonstrations. The additions deal chiefly with the heart and vascular system, respiration, secretion, the central nervous system, and the sense organs; but considerable changes have also been introduced in the description of the methods of studying the physiology of muscle and nerve, and not only have a large number of new illustrations - for the most part in the form of diagrams - been added, but all the original figures have been redrawn, so that the work has taken the character of a new book, which it has been thought proper to furnish with another name. The descriptions of the methods employed are founded upon twelve years' experience in conducting the classes of Practical Physiology in the University of Edinburgh. These classes are of two kinds, elementary and advanced, and some of the methods described are intended only for advanced students. But no attempt has been made in the work to discriminate between the experiments which are expected to be performed by the one or the other grade. Such selection can be best made by the teacher of the subject, and would be regulated by the requirements of the students and the nature of the examinations for which they are preparing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Experimental Physiology: For the Use of Students In writing this book my aim has been to give a short account of those experiments which can be carried out by students during classes, together with a selection of experiments suitable for class demonstrations. In the selection of the experiments I have been largely guided by the course of Advanced Practical Physiology given by Professor Halliburton at King's College, which was based upon the Syllabus of Lectures published by Professor J. Burdon Sanderson in 1879, though in several respects I have modified and added to this course. The illustrations are for the most part new. For permission to reproduce several of the figures of instruments I wish to thank Professors McKendrick, Yeo, Halliburton, and Waller. The source of these figures is indicated in each case. The reproductions of the tracings are all new and taken from tracings specially prepared for the purpose. With very few exceptions they are all reproduced the same size as the originals, so that the measurements indicated in the text directly apply to the figures. Those modifications of many of the usual forms of apparatus figured in the text have been made for me by Mr. C. F. Palmer, and are especially designed for class work. The plan of the book varies slightly from that adopted by Professor Schafer and Professor Halliburton in their 'Essentials.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine The general method of presenting the subject of physiology is the same as that followed in all of the other experimental sciences, viz., the laboratory method, according to which the student is led to dis cover for himself certain facts and to formulate from his collected data conclusions which represent fundamental principles of the science. This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method' of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the Observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology Of the medical course Should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Experimental Physiology: For Students of Medicine In the revised regulations of the University of London, a syllabus of Practical Physiology has been prescribed, which is more in accordance with the actual requirements of the student of medicine. The present work is an attempt to put this syllabus into practice. I have carefully gone through all the exercises with the authors, and I believe not only that the work contains the practical training required by the University of London of its candidates, but also that the student who has conscientiously worked through the. Exercises, will find that the knowledge gained thereby will materially assist him in his future work, in the comprehension and treatment of disease. This, at any rate, is the idea which has inspired the writers of the book. In the first edition of a book of this character, it is impossible to avoid faults both of omission and commission, which can only be brought to light when the book is actually used in practical classwork. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Practical Physiology: Including Histology, Chemical and Experimental Physiology This volume represents in a more formal setting the notes which the author has been in the habit of issuing to students attending the ordinary course of Practical Physiology in this College. The aim has been to supply the student with concise directions for performing the work which he has to do with his own hands in class. The 'choice of methods has been necessarily governed by their adaptability to class purposes, and as much as possible also by their simplicity. In order that the student may read beforehand the work that is to engage his attention at the next meeting of the class, the subject matter has been divided into lessons, which are indicated by marginal numbers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Anatomy and Physiology Every pupil in the study of human physiology should be led to see that most of the materials required for observation and experiment in this subject are furnished by the organs and tissues of his own body. The following laboratory directions aim primarily to familiarize the pupil with the working of his own organs of motion, circulation, respiration, and digestion. Much of the necessary supplementary material (soup-bones, meat, foods, etc.) can be easily obtained by the student. The pieces of apparatus needed for the class demonstrations and experiments (test-tubes, bell-jars, thistle-tubes) are usually found in the chemical or physical laboratory of the school. At the beginning of each topic of study I have given directions which in my experience have been found necessary to guide the pupil in his observations and experiments. The questions which follow these directions have been framed with the object of leading the student to seek the facts from the material itself. The student should be trained especially to distinguish in the experiments observed results from the inferences that may be drawn from those results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: A Text-Book for High Schools and Colleges Those who are pursuing researches in the chemistry of living things are more and more definitely separated from those whose studies are physical. It is scarcely possible to be an authority in both subdivisions. Specialization constantly becomes more pronounced. For example, the subject of the electric phenomena which can be observed in living tissues is extensive enough by itself to engage the exclusive attention of many students. Methods in Physiology. - Somet_hing must now be said of the methods which physiologists employ. Evidently they must work upon living matter since their interest is in the reactions which are peculiar to it. It does not follow that they always make use of intact organisms for the living state may often be protracted for some time in portions of animals (or plants) detached from the body. Thus the muscles of a frog's leg can be preserved for hours after separation from the other systems and will behave in much the same way as if they were still united with them. This property of survival, which is so valuable to experimenters, is much more to be relied on in the so-called cold - blooded than in the warm-blooded animals.
