Download or read book Physical Models written by Bill Addis and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-25 with total page 1114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physical models have been, and continue to be used by engineers when faced with unprecedented challenges, when engineering science has been non-existent or inadequate, and in any other situation when the engineer has needed to raise their confidence in a design proposal to a sufficient level to begin construction. For this reason, models have mostly been used by designers and constructors of highly innovative projects, when previous experience has not been available. The book covers the history of using of physical models in the design and development of civil and building engineering projects including bridges in the mid-18th century, William Fairbairn?s Britannia bridge in the 1840s, the masonry Aswan Dam in the 1890s, concrete dams in the 1920s, thin concrete shell roofs and the dynamic behaviour of tall buildings in earthquakes from the 1930s, tidal flow in estuaries and the acoustics of concert halls from the 1950s, and cable-net and membrane structures in the 1960s. Traditionally, progress in engineering has been attributed to the creation and use of engineering science, the understanding materials properties and the development of new construction methods. The book argues that the use of reduced scale models have played an equally important part in the development of civil and building engineering. However, like the history of engineering design itself, this crucial contribution has not been widely reported or celebrated. The book concludes with reviews of the current use of physical models alongside computer models, for example, in boundary layer wind tunnels, room acoustics, seismic engineering, hydrology, and air flow in buildings.
Book Synopsis Double-Hull Tanker Legislation by : Marine Board
Download or read book Double-Hull Tanker Legislation written by Marine Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA 90) by Congress and subsequent modifications of international maritime regulations resulted in a far-reaching change in the design of tank vessels. Double-hull rather than single-hull tankers are now the industry standard, and nearly all ships in the world maritime oil transportation fleet are expected to have double hulls by about 2020. This book assesses the impact of the double hull and related provisions of OPA 90 on ship safety, protection of the marine environment, and the economic viability and operational makeup of the maritime oil transportation industry. The influence of international conventions on tank vessel design and operation is addressed. Owners and operators of domestic and international tank vessel fleets, shipyard operators, marine architects, classification societies, environmentalists, and state and federal regulators will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Rock Mechanics and Engineering Volume 2 by : Xia-Ting Feng
Download or read book Rock Mechanics and Engineering Volume 2 written by Xia-Ting Feng and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory and Field Testing is the second volume of the five-volume set Rock Mechanics and Engineering and contains nineteen chapters from key experts in the following fields: - Triaxial or True-triaxial Tests under Condition of Loading and Unloading; - Joint Tests; - Dynamic and Creep Tests; - Physical Modeling Tests; - Field Testing and URLs. The five-volume set “Comprehensive Rock Engineering”, which was published in 1993, has had an important influence on the development of rock mechanics and rock engineering. Significant and extensive advances and achievements in these fields over the last 20 years now justify the publishing of a comparable, new compilation. Rock Mechanics and Engineering represents a highly prestigious, multi-volume work edited by Professor Xia-Ting Feng, with the editorial advice of Professor John A. Hudson. This new compilation offers an extremely wideranging and comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in rock mechanics and rock engineering and is composed of peer-reviewed, dedicated contributions by all the key experts worldwide. Key features of this set are that it provides a systematic, global summary of new developments in rock mechanics and rock engineering practices as well as looking ahead to future developments in the fields. Contributors are worldrenowned experts in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering, though younger, talented researchers have also been included. The individual volumes cover an extremely wide array of topics grouped under five overarching themes: Principles (Vol. 1), Laboratory and Field Testing (Vol. 2), Analysis, Modelling and Design (Vol. 3), Excavation, Support and Monitoring (Vol. 4) and Surface and Underground Projects (Vol. 5). This multi-volume work sets a new standard for rock mechanics and engineering compendia and will be the go-to resource for all engineering professionals and academics involved in rock mechanics and engineering for years to come.

Book Synopsis Temperature Based Stress Analysis of Notched Members by : Bela Imre Sandor
Download or read book Temperature Based Stress Analysis of Notched Members written by Bela Imre Sandor and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this effort was to develop and demonstrate a method of experimentally determining both elastic and plastic strain distributions in metallic materials. This was accomplished by recording minute temperature changes on the surface of the material as it was subjected to various loading conditions. Mathematical relationships relating these changes to the strain in the material was developed and verified. Much of the success of this effort was due to the development of thermocouple attachment and readout technique that recorded minute temperature changes (0.1 degree centigrade) at ten millisecond sample intervals. This small time period sampling assures that heat has not been conducted away from the thermocouple attachment point. The thermocouples consisting of two .13 mm dissimilar metal wires were attached to the surface 0.1 mm apart by discharging a large capacitor grounded to the specimen. The small size permits the mounting of several thermocouples in a small area. The determination of plastic zone outlines is thereby facilitated.
