Book excerpt: This thesis presents the results of both analytical and experimental investigati on on active control techniques to damp the vibrations in flexible mechanisms. P ID and Fuzzy control algorithms where investigate on two different mechanisms, a cantilever beam and a four bar rotating mechanisms. A complete electronic setup to interface to the data acquisition system with the control software was desig ned and built. A cantilever beam setup was first constructed and retrofitted with PZT patches. A finite element model was then coded to simulate the free response of the beam. After that two control schemes where designed and tested; a simple PID controll er and Fuzzy logic controller (FLC). The controller where added to the simulatio n and the resulting response was stored. The response of the constructed mechani cal setup was then measured experimentally. The designed controllers where then implemented on a Real Time Data Acquisition system and the system response due t o the effect of these controllers was recorded. A comprehensive comparison betwe en the simulation and experimental response show an exact match. A four-bar mechanism was then constructed. Similar to the cantilever beam case a model was adopted to simulate the system response. A PID and FLC controller was also designed. The resulting simulation response was compared to the experiment al recorded one. To properly asses the effect of the controllers in the four-bar mechanism case t hree performance indicators where introduced. The power spectral density of the response indicates the frequency content of the vibrations and helps evaluate th e effect of the controller in damping the frequencies of concern. The notion of calculating the area under the vibration curve also presented another mean of as sessing the performance of the controllers. Finally the traditional measure of t he peak amplitudes was also utilized.

Book excerpt: The thesis presents the results of an alytical investigation on using intelligen t control techniques to tackle the elastodynamic vibrations in flexible mechanis ms. Different adaptive control schemes based on fuzzy logic and neutral networks were designed and implanted to actively reduce the vibrations of the mechanism whose coupler link is synthesized with PZT sensor/actuator pairs bonded to its s urface at the high strain locations. A Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) was the first control scheme investigate d and implemented on the 4R mechanism. The knowledge about a system in fuzzy con troller less dependent on expert knowledge, an adaptive fuzzy logic controller b ased on expanding or contracting the membership functions of the control signal was implemented. Two adaptive neural network based controllers were also designed and i mplemented: the Single Network Decision (SNDC) and the Neural Internal Model Con trol (NIMC). The learning algorithm adopted to train the networks and to pursue an online adaptation is the backpropagation steepest descent method. Finally adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) controller was considered. ANFIS constructs a fuzzy system from the set of available data and t unes the associated membership functions through a neutral network type structur e. The simulation results showed effective reductions in the vibration a mplitudes at the mid-point of the coupler link for the different control scheme implemented. ANFIS controller proved to be the most powerful with an attenuation ratio of about 57%. Simulation results showed also the effectiveness and superi ority of neural controllers over the fuzzy logic based controllers.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an analytical investigation on active control of elastodynamic response of a four-bar mechanism using piezoelectric sensor/actuator pair using Fuzzy Logic and Adaptive control schemes. The objective is to suppress the vibrations of a planar four-bar mechanism whose coupler link is flexible, the follower is less flexible and the crank is relatively rigid. The dynamic parameters of the system are considered time-variant. Four different control schemes are implemented in this investigation: A Fuzzy Logic Controller, Model Reference Adaptive Controllers based on the MIT rule and the Lyapunov Stability theory, and finally an Indirect Self Tuning Regulator. The simulation results showed that in order to suppress the vibrations in the system, the controller design should be based on the system modes. Response amplitude attenuation ratios of up to 75 percent are achieved. This thesis showed the effectiveness of using adaptive control, as in real life, when system parameters are not exactly known, and may change with tasks.

Book excerpt: Structural vibrations have become the critical factor limiting the performance of many engineering systems, typical amplitudes ranging from meters to a few nanometers. Many acoustic nuisances in transportation systems and residential and office buildings are also related to structural vibrations. The active control of such vibrations involves nine orders of magnitude of vibration amplitude, which exerts a profound influence on the technology. Active vibration control is highly multidisciplinary, involving structural vibration, acoustics, signal processing, materials science, and actuator and sensor technology. Chapters 1-3 of this book provide a state-of-the-art introduction to active vibration control, active sound control, and active vibroacoustic control, respectively. Chapter 4 discusses actuator/sensor placement, Chapter 5 deals with robust control of vibrating structures, Chapter 6 discusses finite element modelling of piezoelectric continua and Chapter 7 addresses the latest trends in piezoelectric multiple-degree-of-freedom actuators/sensors. Chapters 8-12 deal with example applications, including semi-active joints, active isolation and health monitoring. Chapter 13 addresses MEMS technology, while Chapter 14 discusses the design of power amplifiers for piezoelectric actuators.

In many circumstances, vibration greatly affects the nature of engineering design as it often dictates limiting factors in the performance of the system. The conventional treatment is to redesign the system or to use passive damping. The former could be a costly exercise, while the latter is only effective at higher frequencies. Active control techniques have emerged as viable technologies to fill this low-frequency gap. This book is concerned with the study of feedback controllers for vibration control of flexible structures, with a view to minimizing vibration over the entire body of the structure. The book introduces a variety of flexible structures such as beams, strings, and plates with specific boundary conditions, and explains in detail how a spatially distributed model of such systems can be obtained. It addresses the problems of model reduction and model correction for spatially distributed systems of high orders, and goes on to extend robust control techniques such as H-infinity and H2 control design methodologies to spatially distributed systems arising in active vibration control problems. It also addresses other important topics, such as actuator and sensor placement for flexible systems, and system identification for flexible structures with irregular boundary conditions. The text contains numerous examples, and experimental results obtained from laboratory-level apparatus, with details of how similar test beds may be built.

They can be easily shaped to any desired form, they are light-weight, relatively inexpensive, and they have the required mechanical properties for many applications. In many cases, implementation of these systems requires real-time (active) application of a force or a moment to guarantee the required performance. Also sometimes, real-time measurement of the deflections in these systems is needed to measure a property or a parameter. To address these needs, flexible structures have been taken to a different level by enhancing them with smart materials. One of the most frequently used smart materials for flexible structures are piezoelectric layers. The result is a smart flexible structure which can provide a measurement of its deflections, and/or its displacement can be actively controlled. Active control of smart structures is one of the most important topics in this field. Using active control, a desired level of vibration can be induced in the structure, or undesired vibration can be eliminated. Additionally, deflection measurement in flexible smart structures can be improved alongside current developments in other sensing devices. To this end in this dissertation, several new control techniques have been proposed for active vibration control of flexible smart structures based on the method of positive feedback, in addition to decentralized measurement and control using novel networked-based consensus techniques. The methodologies developed in this dissertation are listed as: 0́Ø Multimode Modified Positive Position Feedback 0́Ø Modified Positive Velocity Feedback 0́Ø Hybrid Positive Feedback 0́Ø Spatial Modified Positive Position Feedback 0́Ø Multi Positive Feedback 0́Ø Nonlinear Modified Positive Position Feedback 0́Ø Nonlinear Integral Resonant Controller 0́Ø Nonlinear Integral Positive Position Feedback 0́Ø Optimal consensus observer design for piezo-active smart structures 0́Ø Consensus-based multi-piezoelectric microcantilever sensor 0́Ø Leader-follower based consensus vibration controller 0́Ø Consensus Positive Position Feedback The mentioned approaches which are designed for sensing and control of smart flexible structures are numerically and/or experimentally investigated, and their strengths and weaknesses in each case are thoroughly discussed. This dissertation provides a useful reference for engineers who seek to implement smart structures, and inspires them to develop and apply novel techniques in this field.

Book excerpt: In this dissertation, an analytical investigation on active, semi-active and passive vibration control mechanisms is presented in order to achieve improved shock and vibration isolation of mechanical systems, especially ground vehicle applications. A hybrid active vibration isolation system, incorporating an electro-magnetic force generator along with passive damping and spring elements, is mathematically modeled based on fundamental physical laws and taking into account the generator dynamics. Complete vibration isolation characteristics of the hybrid active control system are evaluated for various feedback variables and control schemes, using numerical simulations. Influence of the force generator dynamics on vibration isolation performance is illustrated through the simulation results. A concept of tunable pressure limiting modulation is proposed in hydraulic damper systems. A hydraulic orifice damper is modified by using the proposed tunable pressure limiting modulation to achieve variable damping in vibration isolation systems, without requiring any external energy source, sophisticated control devices and feedback instrumentation that are essential for active and semi-active isolators. The fluid flow equations are employed to develop the nonlinear mathematical model of the hydraulic damper, incorporating the fluid and mechanical compliance, and the dynamics of the pressure limiting mechanism. The computer simulation reveals that the shock and vibration isolation performance of the tunable pressure limited hydraulic damper systems is comparable to that of the semi-active 'on-off' vibration control systems. A generalized harmonic linearization technique, based on a principle of energy similarity of dynamic elements, is proposed to derive equivalent linear representations of both nonlinear damping and spring elements, in the frequency domain. An analysis of the nonlinear in-plane vehicle model, with air-springs, orifice damping and pressure limiting modulation due to tunable hydraulic shock absorbers, is carried out to establish the stochastic response to random road inputs in terms of power spectral density, and to illustrate the improved vehicle ride performance due to tunable shock absorbers. An interconnected hydro-pneumatic suspension with tunable pressure limiting mechanism is presented to achieve improved vehicle ride and handling performance. Analysis of a roll plane model of a vehicle employing the tunable interconnected suspension shows that the connections of fluid flow within the interconnected suspension provide an enhanced static roll stability; while the tunable pressure limiting modulation between the strut and the accumulator of each suspension unit offers an improved vehicle ride performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book approaches the design of active vibration control systems from the perspective of today’s ideas of computer control. It formulates the various design problems encountered in the active management of vibration as control problems and searches for the most appropriate tools to solve them. The experimental validation of the solutions proposed on relevant tests benches is also addressed. To promote the widespread acceptance of these techniques, the presentation eliminates unnecessary theoretical developments (which can be found elsewhere) and focuses on algorithms and their use. The solutions proposed cannot be fully understood and creatively exploited without a clear understanding of the basic concepts and methods, so these are considered in depth. The focus is on enhancing motivations, algorithm presentation and experimental evaluation. MATLAB®routines, Simulink® diagrams and bench-test data are available for download and encourage easy assimilation of the experimental and exemplary material. Three major problems are addressed in the book: active damping to improve the performance of passive absorbers; adaptive feedback attenuation of single and multiple tonal vibrations; and feedforward and feedback attenuation of broad band vibrations. Adaptive and Robust Active Vibration Control will interest practising engineers and help them to acquire new concepts and techniques with good practical validation. It can be used as the basis for a course for graduate students in mechanical, mechatronics, industrial electronics, aerospace and naval engineering. Readers working in active noise control will also discover techniques with a high degree of cross-over potential for use in their field.
