Applications of classical concepts to these unconventional materials are proving to be insufficient and there is a need to generate data on the fundamental processes of fluid transport through nano-porosity networks. This work attempts to address this issue through an array of flow and materials characterization experiments. The context of this integrated petrophysical analysis is the examination of the impact of fluid leakoff and post stimulation shut-in or "soaking time" on effective gas permeability. Past research on fluid leakoff and soaking time has been predominantly conducted with relatively high permeability rocks and for short durations of up to 15 days. We present data on shales with nano-Darcy (10-6 md) permeability and have run experiments for up to 30 days. A pulse-decay permeability apparatus has been custom designed to accurately measure gas permeabilities down to 1nD and the results have been scrutinized in conjunction with X-Ray CT, SEM imaging, Mercury Porosimetry and XRD analysis. Results indicate that laminations and micro-fractures play an important role in fluid transport properties in these ultra-tight shales. There appears to be very little connected porosity at scales longer than a few millimeters, making clastic permeability virtually non-existent. The consequences of fluid leakoff are severe and the introduction of relatively small quantities of liquid into the rock matrix leads to orders of magnitude reductions in effective permeability. The impact of this leakoff fluid then evolves significantly as it is spontaneously redistributed through the rock matrix due to capillary imbibition. Base permeability or the initial absolute (single phase) permeability of dry sample is found to be key to understanding the consequences of soaking time -- high permeability samples experience relatively minor permeability impairment due to leakoff and permeability recovery with soaking time while tighter samples experience permeability damage greater than 90% due to leakoff which continues to decline with soaking time. This raises the strong possibility that the practice of soaking in shale gas wells may be detrimental to long term production and ultimate recovery.

In Chapter 2, Adsorption of Methane and Carbon Dioxide on Gas Shale and Pure Mineral Samples, we present measurements of methane and carbon dioxide adsorption isotherms at 40°C on gas shale samples from the Barnett, Eagle Ford, Marcellus and Montney reservoirs. Carbon dioxide isotherms were included to assess its potential for preferential adsorption, with implications for its use as a fracturing fluid and/or storage in depleted shale reservoirs. To better understand how the individual mineral constituents that comprise shales contribute to adsorption, measurements were made on samples of pure carbon, illite and kaolinite as well. The resultant volumetric swelling strain was also measured as a function of pressure/adsorption. In Chapter 3, Experimental Investigation of Matrix Permeability of Gas Shales, we present laboratory experiments examining the effects of confining stress and pore pressure on permeability. Experiments were carried out on intact core samples from the Barnett, Eagle Ford, Marcellus and Montney shale reservoirs. The methodology we used to measure permeability allows us to separate the reduction of permeability with depletion (due to the resultant increase in effective confining stress) and the increase in permeability associated with Knudsen diffusion and molecular slippage (also known as Klinkenberg) effects at very low pore pressure. By separating these effects, we are able to estimate the relative contribution of both Darcy and diffusive fluxes to total flow in depleted reservoirs. Book excerpt: Mitigation and prevention of shale-formation damage caused by hydraulic-fracturing fluid/rock interactions play an important role in well-production stability and subsequent refracturing design. This study presents three experimental investigations on the interaction of water/shale, fluid/clay, and fluid/shale. A series of experiments were designed to investigate fluid/shale interactions: hydrophilic to hydrophobic alteration through chemical-vapor deposition, nanoindentation testing on shale sample, geotechnical laboratory experiments on contaminated clay, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) on shale sample. A clay-matrix-based data-screening criterion is proposed for nanoindentation. The continuous-stiffness-measurment (CSM) method is proved to have better definition and characterization of softening of shale based on the proposed criterion. This study furthered the numerical model of clay deformation by Hattab and Chang (2015) by considering different pore fluid concentration. The fracturing fluid contaminated clay produced changes of geotechnical properties. Based on the proposed criterion and designed experiments, fracturing fluid contaminated shale was observed to gain 4 to 6% of NaCl. However, all other minerals contents are found to decrease after the shale powder-fluid interaction. A characteristic depth was proposed to consider reduction of hardness and mineral content at the same time. Moreover, an empirical equation was proposed to describe fracture toughness of shale by using a selection of indentation depth, its corresponding hardness and Young's modulus.

This symposium was organized by South Dakota Mines, Rapid City, South Dakota, in collaboration with the Underground Ventilation Committee (UVC) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME). The Mine Ventilation Symposium series has always been a premier forum for ventilation experts, practitioners, educators, students, regulators, and manufacturers from around the world to exchange knowledge, ideas, and opinions.
