Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted on a small waterplane area, twin-hull (SWATH) model designated as SWATH 6A to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients associated with the following fin-body combinations: bare hull with forward fin, bare hull with aft fin, and bare hull with forward and aft fins. Three types of experiments were conducted at several speeds: calm-water towing for various fixed drafts and trim angles, forced oscillation in both the pitch and heave modes, and towing in regular head waves. The objective of the investigation was to verify the computational methods used for predicting the motions of a SWATH ship in waves. In general agreement between measured and computed hydrodynamic coefficients confirmed the validity of the computational method used. The study also provided valuable insight for improving both the methods of computing the hydrodynamic coefficients and the method of measuring the forces and moments of SWATH models.

Book excerpt: Linear equations of motion with the hydrodynamic coefficients approximated by strip method are used to obtain the motion of small-waterplane-area, twin-hull (SWATH) ships in regular and irregular waves. The couplings among different modes of motion are separated into 3 independent groups: surge, heave-pitch and sway-roll-yaw; and the resulting equations of motions are treated in the frequency domain. The hydrodynamic coefficients of predominantly nonviscous nature, added mass and wavemaking damping, are obtained by strip theory. The effects of wave diffraction, viscous damping, and stationary stabilizing fins are included in the equations of motion within the framework of the linear frequency response of a body to waves. The assumptions involved in the evaluation of various hydrodynamic coefficients in the equation of motion are specified. The validity of the theoretical prediction of motion is checked by correlating with existing model experimental results, and the relevant discussions are made. In general, the theoretical prediction is satisfactory except the case of near zero-encounter frequency which can occur when a ship cruises with certain speed in stern-quartering waves.

Strip theory is used to evaluate hydrodynamic forces. Contributions due to body lift, cross flow drag, and fin lift dominate the damping coefficients. Consequently, their accurate modeling is vital to the accuracy of motion predictions. Semiempirical methods developed for evaluating these components are described. Data for oscillating two-dimensional cylinders, flat plates, and pairs of fins as well as semiempirical expressions for submarine hydrodynamic coefficients have been utilized in this development. Correlation between predicted and experimental results are presented for hydrodynamic coefficients, exciting force and moment, and responses to regular waves. The expressions developed result in correlation which is good and which is notably better than results reported previously.

Book excerpt: Wave excitation and oscillation experiments were conducted to test a 'transient' technique applied to a planing hull form model in the displacement mode. The 'transient' technique uses a pulse which contains a range of frequencies (frequency packet). The technique is thus capable of gathering information that normally requires a series of single-frequency experiments. The heave exciting force and pitch moment obtained by the transient excitation technique are compared with those found by regular wave excitation. The coefficients from pitch and heave oscillations are also presented for both the transient technique and the regualr (single-frequency) technique. The transient technique shows good correlation with the standard technique, yet obtains the experimental data of numerous single-frequency oscillations or wave excitations with a single data segment. This should lead to either a savings in data-gathering time or an increase in the information obtained over a given experimental period. (Author).

Book excerpt: This program evaluated the cambered-hull effect on resistance and propulsion for a small waterplane area twin hull (SWATH IV). This experimental evaluation was divided into six sections to investigate the affects of variations in draft, propeller diameter, correlation allowance, one propeller driving - one windmilling, change of hull camber from inboard to outboard, and in experimental techniques using free to trim and heave, free to heave and captive modes. The effects of draft on resistance and propulsion are sizeable in the low speed range, but are not significant above a speed length ratio of 1.0. The propulsion coefficients are not significantly changed by correlation allowance. Hull camber inward was superior for both resistance and propulsion. The powering characteristics of Model 5287 was dependent on interference, sinkage and trim effects. The technique for conducting the experiments consequently is of prime importance.
