Book excerpt: Loads were applied to the structure in the undamaged condition to obtain baseline behavior and at various levels of damage. Damage was inflicted to the exterior girder of the bridge to simulate field damage. Damage consisted of both removal of concrete and the severing of the prestressing strands. Concrete and steel were removed in small increments so that critical levels of damage could be determined. A total of thirteen levels of damage were inflicted on the exterior girder, each subjected to various load tests. The results of the tests are compared throughout the range of damage levels to determine bridge behavior in the damaged condition.

Book excerpt: Experimental data from static and dynamic tests on 1/7-scale direct models of simply supported, one- and two-cell, box girder bridges are presented. Variation of flexural and torsional stiffnesses and dynamic characteristics, such as the natural frequency of vibrations and dampinig ratios of the bridge models at different levels of cracking damage, are examined; in turn, these dynamic characteristics can be used to estimate the cracking damage in the bridge. the physical model proved to be an adequate tool for the study of static and dynamic responses of box girder bridges at all load levels.

Book excerpt: The Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Analysis and Design of Bridges held at ~e§me, lzmir, Turkey from 28 June 1982 to 9 July 1982 are contained in the present volume. The Advanced Study Institute was attended by 37 lecturers and participants from 10 different countries. The Organizing Committee consisted of Professors P. Gtilkan, A. C. Scordelis, S. T. Wasti and 9. Yl. lmaz. The guidelines set by NATO for the Advanced Study Institute require it to serve not only as an efficient forum for the dissemination of available advanced knowledge to a selected group of qualified people but also as a platform for the exploration of future research possibilities in the scientific or engineering areas concerned. The main topics covered by the present Advanced Study Institute were the mathematical modelling of bridges for better analysis and the scientific assessment of bridge behaviour for the introduction of improved design procedures. It has been our observation that as a result of the range and depth of the lectures presented and the many informal discussions that took place, ideas became fissile, the stimulus never flagged and many gaps in the engineering knowledge of the participants were "bridged". Here we particularly wish to mention that valuable informal presenta tions of research work were made during the course of the Institute by Drs. Friedrich, Karaesmen, Lamas and Parker.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Texas Department of Transportation designs typical highway bridge structures as simple span systems using standard precast, pretensioned girders. Spans are limited to about 150 ft due to weight and length restrictions on transporting the precast girder units from the prestressing plant to the bridge site. Such bridge construction, while economical from an initial cost point of view, may become somewhat limiting when longer spans are needed. This project focused on developing additional economical design alternatives for longer span bridges with main spans ranging from 150-300 ft, using continuous precast, prestressed concrete bridge structures with in-span splices. Phase 1 of this study focused on evaluating the current state-of-the-art and practice relevant to continuous precast concrete girder bridges and recommending suitable continuity connections for typical Texas bridge girders; the findings are documented in the Volume 1 project report. This report summarizes Phase 2 of the research including detailed design examples for shored and partially shored construction, results of a parametric design study, and results of an experimental program that tested a full-scale girder containing three splice connections. The parametric design study indicated that for bridges spanning from 150-300 ft, continuous precast, prestressed concrete girder bridges with in-span splices can provide an economical alternative to steel girder bridges and segmental concrete box girder construction. The tested splice connections performed well under service level loads. However, the lack of continuity of the pretensioning through the splice connection region had a significant impact on the behavior at higher loads approaching ultimate conditions. Improved connection behavior at ultimate conditions is expected through enhanced connection details. Recommendations for design of continuous spliced precast girders, along with several detailing suggestions are discussed in the report.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges B-0071 and B-0171 in Hamilton County, Ohio have been in service for about fifty years. They are short span bridges with prestressed concrete girders. Until late 2001, they had conventional reinforced concrete decks, which have been replaced with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) decks. Two girders in bridge B-0171 were replaced with new prestressed girders. These bridges are significant as there are few instances of FRP decks on concrete girders. The Hamilton County Engineers Office contracted with the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati to perform load testing on the bridges. Information gained from this research will seek to confirm the safety of the new technology, evaluate construction and design techniques with reference to the FRP deck, and determine overall performance of the bridge to provide understanding of the system. The two short span prestressed concrete bridges with fiber reinforced polymer decks were subjected to four sets of nondestructive truckload testing. Strain gauges were placed along the height of the girder cross-section, and longitudinally and transversely across the bottom of the deck. Displacement transducers were placed to measure overall girder displacement, relative deck displacement, deck panel separation, and deck-girder connection separation. A three-dimensional finite element analysis model was created to replicate the performance of each bridge. The two new prestressed girders in bridge B-0171 strengthened the bridge considerably and increased its load carrying capacity. But the old prestressed girders in bridge B-0071 and bridge B-0171 did not show any sign of deterioration. The four sets of test data collected over a two-year period show that the age effect on structural behavior is very small for both the bridges. The deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. Due to low deck stiffness and incomplete connectivity, the FRP deck did little to strengthen the girders. The long term monitoring of the deck result complied with the short term testing as reported by Eder8. The finite element model closely matched with the structural components of the original bridge. The new improved model is a better representation as it was calibrated with four sets of field data collected over a period of two years. The field test data from both tests shows that the girders are simply supported on the abutment. But the girders in the model are designed as fixed end beams to have a reasonable value for the modulus of concrete used in the model. In reality it can be assumed that the support condition is between fixed and simply supported. It was also demonstrated that the deck had very little influence on the distribution of loads in the structure for these bridges. The majority of the load transfer between girders was most likely due to the diaphragms. The Impact Factor based on one set of experimental results was 1.217. However, for analysis the LRFD value of 1.33 was used. The Load Rating Factor for bridge B-0071 was 1.66 and for bridge B-0171 was 2.48 with the governing truck loading being the Design load Type Tandem. These rating factors were based on girder performance only due to insufficient deck information.

This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and analytical study was conducted on a BT-63 prestressed concrete girder to investigate the thermal effects on the girder. A 2D finite element heat transfer analysis model was then developed which accounted for heat conduction, convection, radiation, and irradiation. The solar radiation was predicted using the location and geometry of the girder, variations in the solar position, and the shadow from the top flange on other girder surfaces. The girder temperatures obtained from the 2D heat transfer analysis matched well with the measurements. Using the temperatures from the 2D heat transfer analysis, a 3D solid finite element analysis was performed assuming the temperatures constant along the length of the girder. The maximum vertical displacement due to measured environmental conditions was found to be 0.29 inches and the maximum lateral displacement was found to be 0.57 inches. Using the proposed numerical approach, extremes in thermal effects including seasonal variations and bridge orientations were investigated around the United States to propose vertical and transverse thermal gradients which could then be used in the design of I-shaped prestressed concrete bridge girders. A simple beam model was developed to calculate the vertical and lateral thermal deformations which were shown to be within 6% of the 3D finite element analyses results. Finally, equations were developed to predict the maximum thermal vertical and lateral displacements for four AASHTO-PCI standard girders. To analyze the combined effects of thermal response, initial sweep, and bearing support slope on a 100-foot long BT-63 prestressed concrete girder, a 3D finite element sequential analysis procedure was developed which accounted for the changes in the geometry and stress state of the girder in each construction stage. The final construction stage then exposed the girder to thermal effects and performed a geometric nonlinear analysis which also considered the nonlinear behavior of the elastomeric bearing pads. This solution detected an instability under the following conditions: support slope of 5¡©6 and initial sweep of 4.5 inches.
