Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended for scientists and engineers who need to know about surface roughness, how to measure and describe it and what practical problems it might cause them. The original Rough Surfaces was widely accepted as the definitive work on the subject; this is a completely new edition, updated to take account of recent major advances in measurement and characterisation. Modern instruments are introduced, including laser interferometers and AFM's, and there are sections on fractals and motif analysis. Problems of 3D surface measurement and description are extensively treated. Manufacturing and production engineers, optical and QC engineers, tribologists and many other applied scientists will find this book an essential addition to their libraries.
Book Synopsis Online Surface Roughness Evaluation by : V. G. Sridhar
Download or read book Online Surface Roughness Evaluation written by V. G. Sridhar and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface roughness of machined components has a significant influence on the service performance such as lubrication, friction, wear, fatigue, corrosion, adhesion in surface coating etc. Hence, inspection and control of the surface roughness of components are very important in manufacturing and metal cutting industries. Most of the surface roughness measuring instruments used in industries are contact type, off-line stylus instruments which are not adoptable for highly automated factory environment. The proposed method uses a machine vision technique and LED front lighting method as a substitute for evaluation of surface roughness measurements by stylus instrument.A light scattered pattern from the machined surface is captured and processed to obtain a characteristics feature of optical information viz. Ga (Grey Level value) which is further processed to evaluate the surface roughness value.A comparative study made on surface roughness values obtained by the traditional method and the Machine vision technique shows favorable results. The Machine Vision Techniques using Front Lighting is suitable for online non-contact method which can be adopted for automated inspection environment.

Book excerpt: The focus of the book is the modification of surfaces to tailor them for a specific purpose. Using this method of surface modification, materials chosen for their bulk properties (tensile strength, temperature stability, density, price can be optimized for any particular application, which can lead to improved hardness, biological inertness or activity, corrosion resistance, low or high friction or adhesion, water repellency or wettability, or catalytic activity. The works of the author — many of his crucial papers are included — touches upon these surface properties and spans fields including catalysis, analytical surface science, self-assembled monolayers, tribology, biomaterials, superhydrophobicity and polymer coatings.
