Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermediate-Energy Nuclear Physics is devoted to discussing the interaction between hadrons with nuclei, which leads to the emission of particles during an intranuclear cascade and subsequent decay of a highly excited residual nucleus. Experimental data and the methods and results of the calculation of probabilities of various processes initiated by intermediate-energy hadrons in nuclei are set forth and discussed. The potential for obtaining information on the structure and properties of nuclei by comparing experimental data with theoretical results is analyzed. New issues, such as analytic methods for the solution of kinetic equations describing the cascade, nuclear absorption of hadrons from bound states of hadronic atoms, interaction of antinucleons with nuclei, multifragmentation of highly excited residual nuclei, and polarization phenomena, are discussed in detail. The book also demonstrates hadron-nucleus interactions that bridge the gap between low-energy and heavy ions physics. It is an interesting reference for nuclear physicists and other researchers interested in the analysis of problems associated with the evolution of the early (hot) universe, neutron stars and supernovas, after-burning of radioactive waste in nuclear energy installations, and electronuclear energy breeding.

Book excerpt: This book describes the advanced developments in methodology and applications of NMR spectroscopy to life science and materials science. Experts who are leaders in the development of new methods and applications of life and material sciences have contributed an exciting range of topics that cover recent advances in structural determination of biological and material molecules, dynamic aspects of biological and material molecules, and development of novel NMR techniques, including resolution and sensitivity enhancement. First, this book particularly emphasizes the experimental details for new researchers to use NMR spectroscopy and pick up the potentials of NMR spectroscopy. Second, the book is designed for those who are involved in either developing the technique or expanding the NMR application fields by applying them to specific samples. Third, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Society of Japan has organized this book not only for NMR members of Japan but also for readers worldwide who are interested in using NMR spectroscopy extensively.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete description of the research program of the intermediate energy group at the University of Houston may be found in previous progress reports, renewal proposals, and proposals to the various accelerator advisory committees. Recent documents are appended to this report and summaries of current research activities are presented in the next section. The objectives of the research program are to: (1) investigate selected, forefront problems in experimental intermediate energy physics; (2) educate students in this field of research; and, (3) develop the instrumentation necessary to undertake this experimental program. Generally, the research is designed to search for physical processes which cannot be explained by conventional models of elementary interactions. As one example, we use nuclear targets where the nucleus provides a many body environment of strongly interacting particles, and where one attempts to observe the perturbation of a known interaction by this environment. These effects, however, may be masked by the complexity of the many body problem and may be difficult to observe. Therefore, experiments of this type must be carefully chosen and analyzed for deviations from the more conventional models.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the "Conference on the (p,n) Reaction and the Nucleon-Nucleon Force" held in Telluride, Colorado, March 29-31, 1979. The idea to hold this conference grew out of a program at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility to study the (p,n) reaction in the 50-200 MeV energy range. The first new Indiana data, in contrast to low energy data, showed features suggestive of a dominant one pion exchange interaction. It seemed desir able to review what was known about the fre·e and the effective nucleon-nucleon force and the connection between the low and high energy (p,n) data. Thus the conference was born. The following people served as the organizing committee: S. M. Austin, Michigan State University W. Bertozzi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology S. D. Bloom, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory C. C. Foster, Indiana University C. D. Goodman, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Conference Chairman) D. A. Lind, University of Colorado J. Rapaport, Ohio University G. R. Satch1er, Oak Ridge National Laboratory G. E. Walker, Indiana University R. L. Walter, Duke University and TUNL The sponsoring organizations were: Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, Durham, North Carolina Of course, the major credit for the success of the con ference must go to the speakers who diligently prepared their talks that are reproduced in this volume.

Unfortunately, such effects may be masked by the complexity of the many body problem and may be difficult to observe. Therefore, experiments must be carefully chosen and analyzed for deviations from the more conventional models. There were three major thrusts of the program; strange particle physics, where a strange quark is embedded in the nuclear medium; muon electro-weak decay, which involves a search for a violation of the standard model of the electro-weak interaction; and measurement of the spin dependent structure function of the neutron.
