Book excerpt: The numerical solution of the partial differential equation in the incompressible turbulent boundary layer has been obtained for step q'' sub w/ u sub 1 C sub p square root of C sub f/2 and for Prandtl numbers 0.7, 1 and 7. The Schmidt method of integration was used and the integration was carried out on a Ferranti Pegasus Digital Computer. A method has been developed to apply this numerical solution for obtaining surface and fluid temperature for the case of arbitrary distribution of heat flux at the surface. Simultaneously, approximate equations for calculating heat transfer over a flat plate with arbitrary heat flux are derived for laminar and turbulent flow. To verify the theoretical solution, experiments were made in which the concentration profiles of the injected gas (carbon dioxide) at different stations were measured when the pipe had another gas (air) flowing turbulently through in the axial direction, and the gas injected was passed through a porous section of the tube wall.

Book excerpt: Heat and mass transfer are ubiquitous transport phenomena in many fields, from the natural environment and living organisms to the engineering process. This book focuses on the latest advances in applying fundamental heat and mass transfer theory and novel technologies for addressing a wide range of industrial problems of interest. This book will present readers with a recent analytical study, CFD modelling, and experimental investigations of heat and mass transfer topics associated with a variety of engineering disciplines including multiphase flow, nanofluids, porous media, battery thermal management, and engineering processes such as extractive distillation and arc welding. The book aims to provide new insights to understand the heat and mass transfer phenomena, serving as a platform for exchanging inspiring ideas and boosting further development of these disciplines.

Book excerpt: This unique and comprehensive text considers all aspects of heat exchanger fouling from the basic science of how surfaces become fouled to very practical ways of mitigating the problem and from mathematical modelling of different fouling mechanisms to practical methods of heat exchanger cleaning. The problems that restrict the efficient operation of equipment are described and the costs, some of them hidden costs, that are associated with the fouling of heat exchangers are discussed. Some simple concepts and models of the fouling processes are presented as part of the introduction to the subject.Advice on the selection, design, installation and commissioning of heat exchangers to minimise fouling is given. A large part of the text is devoted to the use of chemical and other additives to reduce or eliminate the problem of fouling. Another large section is designed to give information on both on-line and off-line cleaning of heat exchangers. One of the difficulties faced by designers and operators of heat exchangers is anticipating the likely extent of fouling problems to be encountered with different flow streams. Another large section addresses the question and describes methods that have been used in attempting to define fouling potential. The book concludes with a chapter on how fouling information can be obtained using plant data, field tests and laboratory studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced textbook covering the fundamentals and industry applications of process intensification (PI) discusses both the theoretical and conceptual basis of the discipline. Since interdisciplinarity is a key feature of PI, the material contained in the book reaches far beyond the classical area of chemical engineering. Developments in other relevant disciplines, such as chemistry, catalysis, energy technology, applied physics, electronics and materials science, are extensively described and discussed, while maintaining a chemical engineering perspective. Divided into three major parts, the first introduces the PI principles in detail and illustrates them using practical examples. The second part is entirely devoted to fundamental approaches of PI in four domains: spatial, thermodynamic, functional and temporal. The third and final part explores the methodology for applying fundamental PI approaches in practice. As well as detailing technologies, the book focuses on safety, energy and environmental issues, giving guidance on how to incorporate PI in plant design and operation -- safely, efficiently and effectively.
