In both cases (ESR and NMR) the phenomena had been previously predicted, and Gorter - surely one of the most unlucky experimenters of our time - had made his noble attempts to detect magnetic resonances. Purcell et aZ. , having beaten their radar swords into scientific ploughshares, used a re 3 sonant coaxial cavity, filled the inductive part with 850 cm of paraffin, and produced a resonance with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20. They predicted that the sensitivity could be increased several hundred-fold and foresaw applications in determining magnetic mo ments, investigating spin-lattice coupling and measuring magnetic fields. Their letter reached the editor of Phys. Rev. on Christmas Eve 1945, and the basis of NMR in the solid state was laid. Bloch et aZ. , fortunately working independently, established the entirely different, crossed-coil approach to the observation of NMR in a water sample, which they doped with paramagnetic ions to reduce the relaxation times. They had laid the foundation of liquid-state NMR. Their letter to Phys. Rev. was received on 29 January 1946.

In the preface I wrote: "The problem faced by a beginner today is enormous. That reference in turn is based on another, so the hapless student finds himself in a seemingly endless retreat. I have felt that graduate students or others beginning research in magnetic resonance needed a book which really went into the details of calculations, yet was aimed at the beginner rather than the expert. " The original goal was to treat only those topics that are essential to an understanding of the literature. Thus the goal was to be selective rather than comprehensive. With the passage of time, important new concepts were becoming so all-pervasive that I felt the need to add them. That led to the second edition, which Dr. Lotsch, Physics Editor of Springer-Verlag, encouraged me to write and which helped launch the Springer Series in Solid-State Sciences. Now, ten years later, that book (and its 1980 revised printing) is no longer available. Meanwhile, workers in magnetic resonance have continued to develop startling new insights.

Book excerpt: This dissertation presents studies of several molecule-based magnets using both experimental and theoretical methods to understand the quantum tunneling and thermally assisted magnetic relaxation at the single-ion level. The molecule-based magnets presented in this dissertation can be sorted into two categories: a) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) and b) single-chain magnets (SCMs). In these systems, the quantum tunneling and thermally assisted magnetic relaxation play critical roles both in terms of fundamental scientific reasons and due to the potential applications of SMMs and SCMs in information technologies. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) were employed as two spectroscopic techniques to probe the rich physics of these magnetic materials. Detailed EPR measurements were performed on two dinuclear [MnIII]2 molecular magnets to study the interplay between magnetic anisotropy and exchange interactions. These results show the importance of considering both interactions in interpreting magnetometry measurements performed at both high and low temperatures.
