Book excerpt: During the past few years the physics and technology of charged particle beams on which electron-positron linear colliders in the TeV region, storage rings from synchrotron radiation sources and Free Electron Lasers are based, has seen a remarkable development. The purpose of this series of schools is to address the physics and technology issues of this field, train young people and at the same time provide a forum for discussions on recent advances for scientists active in this field. The subjects chosen for this first course reflect the recent interest in TeV electron positron colliders, the possibility offered by Free Electron Lasers to power them and the developments in the production of high brightness electron beams.

Book excerpt: This work studies the production and measurement of longitudinally coherent, ultrashort pulses of light from a self-amplified spontaneous emission free-electron laser (SASE FEL) by using an energy-chirped electron beam in conjunction with a tapered undulator. This scheme effectively preserves the FEL gain only where an appropriate undulator taper compensates for the detuning experienced by an amplifying radiation spike as it slips forward in the electron beam rest frame. The simultaneous time and frequency-domain measurement of ultrashort pulses of light generated in this manner were made with an advanced transient-grating frequency-resolved optical gating (TG FROG) diagnostic, which has the potential to push ultrashort light pulse measurement at FEL facilities to shorter wavelength regimes. The theoretical framework presented in this dissertation has two components. The FEL theory presented here includes an analysis of the coupled wave and Vlasov equations, which are linearized in the one-dimensional case, and are solved in the frequency domain by the Laplace transform technique. The exponential gain regime for SASE FEL light is explored in detail to clearly identify concepts that are relevant to the energy-chirp and undulator tapering experiment. Some of these concepts are illustrated with fully three-dimensional, time-dependent numerical particle simulations using the FEL code GENESIS for the supportive case of ultrashort, low-charge electron beams. In addition, nonlinear optics, the foundation upon which all FROG diagnostics are built, is briefly explored using two complementary perspectives as they apply to the TG FROG geometry. The experimental section describes in detail the first direct time-domain measurements of a single coherent radiation spike from a SASE FEL amplifier employing the energy-chirped electron beam and tapered undulator technique at the SPARC FEL test facility in Frascati, Italy. Electron beams were accelerated and compressed using the velocity bunching technique, which leaves a residual energy-chirp in the longitudinal phase space. The energy-chirp was compensated by appropriately tapering individual undulator sections. This process was optimized at a resonant wavelength of & lambda; = 530 nm. The ultrashort light pulses that were generated had a temporal full-width at half-maximum of 98 fs and a time-bandwidth product of TBP & sim; 1.2, indicating that the Fourier limit was nearly achieved. This experiment provides further insight into methods that can be used to shape the SASE FEL longitudinal profile and enhance coherence properties. In addition, the measurements were taken with an advanced, and relatively simple, TG FROG diagnostic that can potentially be used to measure ultrashort UV pulses at FEL facilities.

Book excerpt: The analysis develops a classical theory of how a signal evolves from the initial incoherent spontaneous emission in long undulators. The theory is based on the coupled Klimontovich-Maxwell equations. Formulas for the radiated power, spectral characteristics and electron correlations are derived. The saturation due to nonlinear effects is studied using a quasi-linear extension of the theory. The results agree reasonably well with the recent Livermore experiment in the microwave range. Performance of a possible high-gain free electron laser in a short-wavelength region is evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors investigate finite pulse effects in self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE), especially the role of coherent spontaneous emission (CSE) in the start and the evolution of the free-electron laser (FEL) process. When the FEL interaction is negligible, they solve the one-dimensional Maxwell equation exactly and clarify the meaning of the slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). In the exponential gain regime, they solve the coupled Vlasov-Maxwell equations and extend the linear theory to a bunched beam with energy spread. A time-dependent, non-linear simulation algorithm is employed to study the CSE effect for a general beam distribution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report on the first lasing of a high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) free-electron laser (FEL). The experiment was conducted at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). This is a BNL experiment in collaboration with the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory. A preliminary measurement gives a high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) pulse energy that is 2 x 107 times larger than the spontaneous radiation, In a purely self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mode of operation, the signal was measured as 10 times larger than the spontaneous radiation in the same distance ((approximately)2 m) through the same wiggler. This means the HGHG signal is 2 x 106 times larger than the SASE signal. To obtain the same saturated output power by the SASE process, the radiator would have to be 3 times longer (6 m).

This book was released on 1984 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frequency-resolved measurements of the emission of a collective free-electron laser operating at millimeter wavelengths have shown emission spectra that agree with theoretical predictions for the collective free-electron laser instability. Broad tunability, moderate emission linewidths, and high single frequency gain have been observed. In addition, adjusting the axial field in the end region of the interaction has been found in some cases to cause a large increase in measured power and efficiency. (Author).

Since the publication of the first edition in 1992 there has been a significant increase both in the number of free-electron lasers in use worldwide, and in the understanding of the various regimes for these devices. In order to maintain the position of this book as the most comprehensive and thorough reference and tutorial in the field, the authors have completely updated the book. In addition to updates and corrections to chapters in the first edition, new chapters have been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the proceedings of the 7th Course on Physics and Technology of Free Electron Lasers of the International School of Quantum Electronics, which was held in Erice (Italy) from 17 to 29 August 1980, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The level of this Course was much closer to a workshop than to a school, and "Advances in Free Electron Lasers" might have been an appropriate title. Many of the world's leading scientists in the field (among them, the inventor of FEL, J. M. J. Madey) were brought together to review the accomplishments of FEL experiments, as well various trends in FEL theory. In editing this material we did not modify the original manu scripts except to assist in uniformity of style. The papers. are presented without reference to the chronology of the Course but in the following topical arrangement: A. "Fundamentals of free electron lasers," a group of tutorial papers; B. "Free electron lasers operating in the Compton regime," where theories and experiments of FELs based on Compton scattering are reviewed; C. "Free electron lasers operating in the Raman regime," a dis cussion of FELs based on Raman scattering; D. "Optical klystrons," where the possibility of this class of FEL is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint; E.
