Book excerpt: Following the satisfactory response of the unbonded post-tensioned precast concrete jointed wall system tested for seismic performance as part of the PREcast Seismic Structural Systems (PRESSS) test building, a set of design guidelines was published. Based on these guidelines, Thomas & Sritharan (2003) developed a procedure to analyze the unbonded jointed wall systems. The primary objective of this research is to improve this analysis procedure so that it can be applied to analyze both unbonded post-tensioned single walls and jointed wall systems. Using the experimental data from PRESSS test building, ATLSS research center single wall tests, the accuracy of this analysis procedure and that based on the monolithic beam analogy (MBA) are examined. It was found that both the analysis methods predicted the moment resistance of the walls adequately at the given base rotation. Based on these analysis procedures, revised set of design guidelines are proposed for design of precast jointed wall systems with unbonded post-tensioning steel. A detailed investigation on the influence of several wall parameters on the lateral load behavior of jointed wall system is conducted and a new jointed wall concept refer to as the "jointed wall-column (JWC) system" is proposed. It is shown by analysis that, the JWC system will be more economical than that of an equivalent jointed wall system tested in the PRESSS building.

Book excerpt: This research investigates the experimental lateral load response of an unbonded post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete special structural wall with bonded longitudinal mild steel reinforcement under the action of quasi-static lateral load. The objective of this report is to describe the procedures for the construction and testing of the wall and to present a summary of testing results. The unbonded post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete special structural wall with bonded longitudinal mild steel reinforcement provides energy dissipation through the yielding of the boundary and web longitudinal steel reinforcement. This steel reinforcement extends from the wall into the foundation block. Additionally, self-centering capabilities are provided by the unbonded post-tensioning strands that extend from the foundation block to the top of the wall. It was found that the limit states that characterize the lateral load response of an unbonded post-tensioned cast-in-place structural wall with longitudinal mild bonded steel reinforcement occurred as presented by Srivastava (2013). Also, yielding of the longitudinal mild steel reinforcement was effective as an energy dissipator. However, self-centering capabilities were greatly diminished after the yielding of the longitudinal bars at a drift of approximately 0.5%. Therefore, self-centering capabilities were greatly limited by the insufficiency of the restoring force provided by post-tensioning. Finally, results showed that initial residual drift of 0.2% occurred as early as the longitudinal bars started to yield which occurred at 0.6%.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of structural damage and the associated economic impact caused by recent earthquakes worldwide have spurred an increased interest in high performance seismic resisting systems that can sustain severe earthquakes with minimal damage. A particularly efficient high performance wall system consists of precast concrete panels vertically post-tensioned to the foundation with unbonded post-tensioning steel. The system relies on the vertical unbonded post-tensioning steel for flexural strength and re-centering, while mild bonded steel bars provide energy dissipation and additional flexural strength. Under lateral loading, the traditional plastic hinge mechanism, associated with structural damage and the potential for large residual deformation, is replaced by a controlled rocking mechanism at the wall-to-foundation interface that allows the system to undergo large nonlinear displacements with minimal damage and minor residual deformations. This thesis presents experimental results from a dynamic test on a full-scale, four-story precast concrete building that utilized unbonded post-tensioned (UPT) walls in one principal direction of response and bonded post-tensioned concrete frames in the orthogonal direction. The building was subjected to simultaneous three-dimensional shaking using recorded ground motions from the 1995 Kobe earthquake. The excellent performance of the test building in the wall direction of response, exhibiting minimal damage and no residual deformations, confirms that UPT walls are a viable alternative to conventional reinforced concrete (RC) structural walls. In addition to providing experimental evidence of seismic performance of UPT walls incorporated into a building system, the tests provided valuable insight into issues typically not addressed in component-level experimental studies, such as the role of the floor diaphragm, influence of component interactions, and contributions of three-dimensional responses and torsion. As evidenced by the E-Defense test building, these effects need to be considered to obtain realistic estimates of lateral resistance and displacement demands. The tests also provided a wealth of data against which design methodologies and analytical models for UPT systems can be benchmarked. Based on a detailed assessment of the E-Defense UPT walls in accordance with ACI ITG-5.2 (2009), and the performance of the UPT walls in the tests, design implications were identified and some revisions to ACI ITG-5.2 were suggested. Finally, an analytical model of the building in the wall direction was developed. Experimental results in this direction were used to assess the ability of the model to capture the dynamic responses and interactions of unbonded post-tensioned structural systems. Correlations between analytical and experimental results were satisfactory for a range of global and local responses, and key aspects of the interaction between components such as framing action and beam elongation effects were adequately reflected in the model.

Book Synopsis Analysis and Validation of a Seismic Design Method Proposed for Precast Jointed Wall Systems by : Derek James Thomas
Download or read book Analysis and Validation of a Seismic Design Method Proposed for Precast Jointed Wall Systems written by Derek James Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the satisfactory response of the unbonded post-tensioned precast concrete wall system tested for seismic performance as part of the PREcast Seismic Structural Systems (PRESSS) test building, a set of design guidelines was published. The primary objective of this research is to evaluate the adequacy of the design guidelines and make appropriate recommendations so that the guidelines can be adopted for design of jointed walls in seismic regions. The test data to date on such systems are those collected during the wall direction testing of the PRESSS test building. Hence, this data set has been employed in the validation process. Furthermore, in order to validate the design guidelines over a range of lateral drift levels, an analytical procedure was first developed by reversing the suggested guidelines. Additionally, because of the shortcomings associated with the use of the equivalent stress block concept in design, an alternative analysis method was also considered, which was based on the monolithic beam analogy recommended for jointed systems. The analytical results from monotonic loading were compared to experimental response of the wall established from the PRESSS test building. It was found that both the analysis methods based on PRESSS and MBA predicted the moment response of the wall adequately. However, utilizing the PRESSS guidelines it was found that the neutral axis depth was overestimated by over 100% and the post-tensioning elongation was underestimated by 26%. It was also revealed that the frame contributed to the moment resistance in the wall direction by as much as 25%.
