Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Holy Spirit and Christian Experience, Simeon Zahl presents a fresh vision for Christian theology that foregrounds the relationship between theological ideas and the experiences of Christians. He argues that theology is always operating in a vibrant landscape of feeling and desiring, and shows that contemporary theology has often operated in problematic isolation from these experiential dynamics. He then argues that a theologically serious doctrine of the Holy Spirit not only authorizes but requires attention to Christian experience. Against this background, Zahl outlines a new methodological approach to Christian theology that attends to the emotional and experiential power of theological ideas. This methodology draws on recent interdisciplinary work on affect and emotion, which has shown that affects are powerful motivating realities that saturate all dimensions of human thinking and acting. In the process, Zahl also explains why contemporary theology has often been ambivalent about subjective experience, and demonstrates that current discourse about God's activity in the world is often artificially abstracted from experience and embodiment. At the heart of the book, Zahl proposes a new account of the theology of grace from this experiential and pneumatological perspective. Focusing on the work of the Holy Spirit in salvation and sanctification, he retrieves insights from Augustine, Luther, and Philip Melanchthon to present an affective and Augustinian vision of salvation as a pedagogy of desire. In articulating this vision, Zahl engages critically with recent emphasis on participation and theosis in Christian soteriology, and charts a new path forward for Protestant theology in a landscape hitherto dominated by the theological visions of Barth and Aquinas.

Book excerpt: Bestselling author and pastor Lloyd John Ogilvie has spent years observing—and experiencing himself—the deep needs of Christians, and why those needs for love, comfort, guidance, or discernment often go unmet. In Experiencing the Power of the Holy Spirit, he draws on Scripture to illuminate the living and active work of the Spirit. Because many believers have a limited view of their great Advocate, Counselor, Helper, and Companion, they don’t realize that in day-to-day life they can depend on Him to... encourage, guide, and correct them, and prompt them to speak or act appropriately help them identify deep motives and penetrate to the root of personal struggles help them discern in prayer what is best in a situation When believers build their lives upon reliance on the Spirit, they can live confidently in life’s stressful situations and relationships, knowing they have a Friend who is always there to help.

Book excerpt: Dynamic, Never-Before-Published Work on the Holy Spirit from A.W. Tozer What does it mean to have the Holy Spirit in our lives? Many look to extraordinary experiences and manifestations as evidence of the Spirit. But what happens when the event is over? How can we experience the Holy Spirit in the ordinary, everyday world? How can we be filled with the Spirit? In this material taken from Tozer's sermons, he answers these questions and explores life in the Spirit from a balanced perspective. The church needs the gifts of the Spirit--all of them--or it will never be what God intends it to be. But this has to happen in wisdom and humility. Many people talk about being filled with the Holy Spirit, but very few accept the conditions for being filled. Tozer lays down requirements for the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and transform us into Spirit-filled people. Though every Christian has the Holy Spirit, not every Christian is filled with the Holy Spirit. He explains the difference and how it could change the evangelical church of today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Hailu brings fresh, new insights into the operation of the spiritual gifts as found in 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 from his ministerial experiences. He tells how he was baptized in the Holy Spirit in 1993 and started experiencing what can only be termed “explosive” manifestations of the spiritual gifts shortly thereafter. He takes the position that every Christian is granted one or more gifts upon being born-again, but only fully “unwraps” those gifts upon receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. He emphasizes the importance of developing a personal relationship with and dependence on the Holy Spirit in order to exhibit the power-filled life that Jesus Christ had in his earthly ministry. As both an academic and a religious leader, this work constitutes an important contribution to the theological dialogue on this important theme. It is simply written so that the layperson as well as the theologian can rejoice with this man whom God has raised up to minister to the present generation.

Others speak with confidence and enthusiasm about him, challenging us to be 'filled with the Spirit', or to live a 'Spirit-filled life'. As a result, the work of the Spirit has sometimes been controversial. Graham Beynon looks at the main New Testament passages in which the Spirit s work is described. With freshness and clarity, he builds a picture of what the Holy Spirit does, and hence what experiencing him in our lives should look like.

Book excerpt: Hegel's philosophy of religion is a philosophical theology in which God is conceived as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity - ultimately God inclusive of the world. For Hegel, this inclusive divine subjectivity took the form of a movement of conceptual thought. In an effort to work with Hegel while going beyond him, Experience and Spirit presents God as a movement of inclusive divine subjectivity; however, that movement is understood to be not one of thought but of enriching experience and, thus, of spirit. This argument in favor of a renewed understanding of Hegel's true infinite proceeds in three major steps: first, a consideration of Hegel's own problematic proposal; second, the elaboration of a fuller and more contemporary notion of experience; and, third, three constructive phenomenological and philosophical reflections on basic questions in philosophical theology, namely, the experience of God, speaking about God, and the notions of evil, freedom, and mystery. In the end, Experience and Spirit proposes a philosophy of generosity, both human and divine.

Jesus used this illustration to explain to us the work of grace in the Christian experience. This book will show us how the Holy Spirit works in the heart of a person to reprove, convert, enable, and strengthen us to live for God. Further, the work of the Spirit teaches us that it is only in listening to Christ¿s voice and obeying His Word that our faith and worship will be acceptable to God. True spirit-filled worship and living cannot purposely go contrary to the Holy Bible. When we are living in the Spirit, our worship and daily lifestyle will be in harmony with the principles of Christ as revealed in God¿s Word. The still small voice of conviction, guided by the Word of God, shall ever be speaking, ¿This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left¿ (Isaiah 30:21 KJV).

In a new Introduction, Peter Lake discusses the relevance of Nuttall's book to, and its influence on, major works in seventeenth-century English history written since 1946.

Book excerpt: In this book the distinguished Roman Catholic theologian Bernard Cooke reassesses the long-standing Christian description of divine power. The word "power" evokes the spheres of economic, political, and social life. Cooke suggests, however, that the deepest questions about conflicting powers are theological and concern what Christians have traditionally referred to as "the Holy Spirit" and "salvation."
