Book excerpt: This book, the first of its kind, brings together leading scholars from multiple perspectives in a serious dialogue about continuity and change in global media production and content. Looking at a wide swath of the world, these authors show the emergence of transnational collaboration in global television and film production across national borders that seem to transcend national cultures and identities. At the same time, traditional class analysis of such phenomena is reframed within the rise of myriad social movements for equality, democracy, human rights, and defense of the environment. What are the effects of media, local or global? Does the West continue to dominate or is cultural imperialism waning? With original chapters written by leading scholars from a variety of disciplines, this book will appeal to students and scholars interested in global media communication, cultural studies, and international political economy.

Book Synopsis Berg Water Project by : Lawrence J.M. Haas
Download or read book Berg Water Project written by Lawrence J.M. Haas and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-07-08 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has witnessed a major global shift in thinking about water, including the role that water infrastructure plays in sustainable development. This rethinking aims to balance better the social, economic, and environmental performance aspects in the development and management of large dams. Infrastructure strategies must complement strategies for water, environment, and energy security and for emerging concerns to reduce vulnerability in water resource systems to climate change on the horizon. Communication is central to multi-stakeholder dialogue and partnerships at all levels needed to achieve sustainability and governance reform in water resource management and infrastructure provision. At the same time, communication drives the advocacy to mobilize political will and public support for beneficial change and continuous improvement in practices. This case study emphasizes that is not only important to mobilize all opportunities to reconcile water demand and supply in river basins that are coming under increasing levels of water stress, but also to integrate effectively governance and anti-corruption reforms and sustainability improvements into all stages of the planning and project cycle adding value for stakeholders.
Book Synopsis The Europa Lectures, 2002–2014 by : Martin Holland
Download or read book The Europa Lectures, 2002–2014 written by Martin Holland and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-01 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commencing in 2001, the Europa Lecture has become a high-profile fixture on the EU-New Zealand calendar. As witnessed by the fifteen lectures reproduced in this new volume, the speakers were selected for both their high-level profile as well as their importance to this bilateral dialogue. This volume includes speeches from three Prime Ministers, a President, four European Commissioners as well as four Foreign Ministers both European and New Zealanders. Each lecture, naturally, reflects the important issues of their day and cumulatively they produced a unique record of how EU-New Zealand relations have evolved, matured and continued to converge since the start of the new millennium. The earlier lectures reflect a general optimism in the European integration project, perhaps best highlighted by the historic enlargement of 1st May 2004. However, with the onset of the global financial crisis and then subsequent Eurozone debt crisis, the anticipated trajectory towards a supranational “ever closer union” was interrupted and the EU found itself confronting a period of both internal and external criticism and anxiety. It was in these less than auspicious times that significant effort towards enhancing New Zealand’s bilateral relations with the EU gained momentum. These initiatives are expected to bear fruit in 2016 with the signing of a Partnership Agreement on Relations and Cooperation and – BREXIT not withstanding – a fully-fledged EU-NZ Free Trade Agreement before 2020. This collection of lectures ends just as the rise in Euroscepticism became evident and the first serious murmurings of BREXIT could be detected within British politics. The impact the UK’s decision will have on EU-New Zealand relations remains uncertain although, as the introductory chapter to this volume suggests, since 2015 New Zealand’s media have seemingly begun to conflate coverage of the EU as being tantamount to BREXIT. If this trend does come to dominate the New Zealand media landscape then Kiwi perceptions towards Europe run a risk of becoming unbalanced and a “Back to the Future” perspective reflecting the difficulties of the 1970s may again come shape perceptions.

Book Synopsis India, Vietnam and the Indo-Pacific by : Pankaj K Jha
Download or read book India, Vietnam and the Indo-Pacific written by Pankaj K Jha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-05-04 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves into the examination of bilateral relations between India and Vietnam in the 21st century and how the Indo-Pacific as a geo-political construct lends itself to the improvement of their engagement. With the rise and increasing assertiveness of China, the slow growth of the United States, the resurgence of Japan, and the oscillating role of ASEAN as a multilateral organization, the Indo-Pacific has emerged as a theatre of international geostrategic competition. This book studies these changing geopolitical realities and new evolving strategic configurations, while addressing political, economic, defence, and strategic aspects of the relationship along with the role of China and the US in facilitating ties. India’s Act East Policy that was upgraded from the Look East Policy – one of the main drivers for India’s increasing presence in the Asia-Pacific region – is also examined in this volume. An important intervention in the study of international relations, this book will be indispensable to students and researchers of maritime studies, security studies, politics and international relations, geopolitics, and Asian studies.
Book Synopsis Cultivating Future-Oriented Learners by : Yael Yondler
Download or read book Cultivating Future-Oriented Learners written by Yael Yondler and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Cultivating Future-Oriented Learners: Polyphonic Education in a Changing World offers a new theoretical and practical educational approach, responding to our era's challenges. The polyphonic paradigm it proposes uses current educational elements to produce "a new whole" connecting technology, varied learning spaces, humanizing pedagogy, and global values of personal, social, and environmental responsibility. Combining all these elements, the presented polyphonic wisdom model enables teachers to design a technology-enhanced, pluralistic, and dynamic learning environment where individual voices are heard while all the voices harmonize. Centered around human dignity and affinity between the personal and collective good, it aspires to assist educators in cultivating productive and value-based future citizens and teachers within a democratic society. The book introduces thirteen unique teaching models to foster humanizing global values: diversity and inclusion, ecohumanistic responsibility, and a dialogue between diverse stands and perspectives. It guides learners toward attaining their objectives by acquiring independent learning skills. Together, these teaching models are a catalogue of practical implementation choices of the polyphonic wisdom model in various educational frameworks. The envisaged readership encompasses educators and related professionals, but no less so anyone concerned about the current educational crisis who wishes to rethink education, technology, and values such as present and future personal, social, and environmental responsibility.
Book Synopsis Japan's new security partnerships by : Wilhelm Vosse
Download or read book Japan's new security partnerships written by Wilhelm Vosse and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of solely relying on the United States for its national security needs, over the last decade, Japan has begun to actively develop and deepen its security ties with a growing number of countries and actors in the Asia-Pacific region and Europe, a development that has further intensified under the Shinzo Abe administration. This is the first book that provides a comprehensive analysis of the motives and objectives from both the Japanese and the partner-countries’ perspectives, and asks what this might mean for the security architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, and what lessons can be learned for security cooperation more broadly. This book is for those interested in Japan’s security policy beyond the US-Japan security alliance, and non-US centred bilateral and multilateral security cooperation. It is an ideal textbook for undergraduate and graduate level courses on regional security cooperation and strategic partnerships, and Japanese foreign and security policy.
