Book excerpt: The New York Times called this famous guide to a more rewarding life “sound and solid, the product of a richly furnished mind, a book of wisdom.” Written by one of America’s most distinguished psychiatrists, Dr. Smiley Blanton, it has already found its way into some 200,000 American homes. Hundreds of readers have written to the author saying they were helped, inspired—and wanted more. In response to these letters, Dr. Blanton added an enormously valuable new section showing how men and women of all ages can give themselves as second chance at happiness—this section, titled “On Making a Fresh Start,” is included in this Expanded Edition, which was first published in 1957. “I believe that it is possible to achieve an emotional change with the insight developed through books. Books can make a change in one’s philosophy and attitude toward life. That is why so many books of the world are so deeply cherished. “It is in this hope that I write, in an effort to bring to people the hard-won truths of my observation over many years of life and during more than forty years of practice in psychiatry.”—Dr. Smiley Blanton, Introduction

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Love and Freedom, Jorge Ferrer proposes a paradigm shift in how romantic relationships are conceptualized, a step forward in the evolution of modern relationships. In the same way that the transgender movement surmounted the gender binary, Ferrer defines how a parallel step can—and should—be taken with the relational style binary. This book offers the first systematic discussion of relationship modes beyond monogamy and polyamory, as well as introduces the notion of “relational freedom” as the capability to choose one’s relational style free from biological, psychological, and sociocultural conditionings. To achieve these goals, Ferrer first discusses a number of critical categories—specifically, monopride/polyphobia, and polypride/monophobia—that mediate the contemporary “mono–poly wars,” that is, the predicament of mutual competition among monogamists and polyamorists. The ideological nature of these “mono–poly wars” is demonstrated through a review of available empirical literature on the psychological health and relationship quality of monogamous and polyamorous individuals and couples. Then, after showing how monogamy and polyamory ultimately reinforce each other, Ferrer articulates three relational pathways to living in-between, through, and beyond the mono/poly binary: fluidity, hybridity, and transcendence. Moving beyond that binary opens a fuzzy, liminal, and multivocal relational space that Ferrer calls novogamy. In this groundbreaking book, readers will learn practical tools to not only transform jealousy, but also enhance their relational freedom while being aware of key issues of diversity and social justice. They will also learn novel criteria to evaluate the success of their intimate relationships, and be introduced to a transformed vision of romantic love beyond both monocentrism and emerging polynormativities.

Book excerpt: Low-Fat Love unfolds over three seasons as Prilly Greene and Janice Goldwyn, adversarial editors at a New York press, experience personal change relating to the men, and absence of women, in their lives. Ultimately, each woman is pushed to confront her own image of herself, exploring her insecurities, the stagnation in her life, and her reasons for having settled for low-fat love. Along with Prilly and Janice, the cast of characters’ stories are interwoven throughout the book. Low-Fat Love is underscored with a commentary about female identity-building and self-acceptance and how, too often, women become trapped in limited visions of themselves. Women’s media is used as a signpost throughout the book in order to make visible the context in which women come to think of themselves as well as the men and women in their lives. In this respect, Low-Fat Love offers a critical commentary about popular culture and the social construction of femininity. Grounded in a decade of interview research with young women and written in a fun, chick-lit voice, the novel can be read for pleasure or used as supplemental reading in a variety of courses in women’s/gender studies, sociology, psychology, popular culture, media studies, communication, qualitative research, and arts-based research. “Sometimes, when I read an especially wonderful book I say to myself, “I wish I had written that!” And that is how I feel about Low-Fat Love. To write a page-turner of a book that teaches about contemporary gender relationships is a major feat. Patricia Leavy has done that with Low-Fat Love. Brilliant!” Laurel Richardson, Ph.D., The Ohio State University “Patricia Leavy writes with passion, verve and skill. I will use this in my relational communication and women’s studies classes because it is beautiful, relatable, and offers smart critique of how pop-culture’s expectations for intimate relationships often lets us down. Leavy offers readers a way to think through their close relationships and demand better of themselves and others.” Sandra L. Faulkner, Ph.D., Bowling Green State University “I couldn’t put it down! Low-Fat Love is a remarkable novel that every women’s studies class and interpersonal class would do well to read. The title is indicative of the search for meaningful, deep, enriching relationships beyond the artificial, low-fat love that is all too pervasive in society today. I wholeheartedly recommend this book.” Robin Patric Clair, Ph.D., Purdue University “Low-Fat Love is absolutely brilliant. This new edition is a must-read for anyone who has lived, loved, dreamed, and at times, settled for less than what we deserve – in other words, this is a book for everyone.” Anne Harris, Ph.D., Monash University and Australian Research Fellow in Creativity and Arts in Education Patricia Leavy, Ph.D., is an internationally known independent scholar and novelist. She has published eighteen books including Method Meets Art: Arts-Based Research Practice and Fiction as a Research Practice. She was named the 2010 New England Sociologist of the Year by the New England Sociological Association and received the prestigious 2014 Special Achievement Award from the American Creativity Association. www.patricialeavy.com

Book excerpt: Revised & Updated Edition! God is love. Crazy, relentless, all-powerful love. Have you ever wondered if we're missing it? It's crazy, if you think about it. The God of the universe—the Creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor—loves us with a radical, unconditional, self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you've verbalized it yet or not, we all know something's wrong. Does something deep inside your heart long to break free from the status quo? Are you hungry for an authentic faith that addresses the problems of our world with tangible, even radical, solutions? God is calling you to a passionate love relationship with Himself. Because the answer to religious complacency isn't working harder at a list of do's and don'ts—it's falling in love with God. And once you encounter His love, as Francis describes it, you will never be the same. Because when you're wildly in love with someone, it changes everything. Book excerpt: What if we loved ourselves more than we could imagine? We are told to love ourselves, but we don't know how or even why. What if we learned actual techniques that helped us love ourselves and align our energy with our Higher Self and the Universe for a more joyous life? It’s possible, and it just takes willingness and practice. When we learn and use real tools, we are better able to surf the waves of life, and meet life with grace. When we learn how we are resisting loving ourselves and learn how to allow the love we are to flow through us, we utilize the buoyant, loving energy of the Universe to flow more smoothly and joyously through life. Everything is energy, including us! When our energy is in balance and flows smoothly, we feel harmonious, peaceful, and aligned with our true nature, our Higher Self, part of the Universe. This is our natural state. Daily life often seems to interrupt our connection with our true state of being. By working with our energy and metaphysical principles, we can remember who we really are; we realign with our true self, which is pure Love, and experience the ease, peace, and joy that results. Metaphysics is about using the energy we are beyond our body in a practical way while we are in this body. By understanding that we are both human and Divine and having compassion for how challenging it is to live in this world, we begin to understand Love, the most powerful force in the Universe. This is not mysterious; this is very real and very available to each of us. The keys to healing are Love and Willingness. The keys are yours for the taking.

In this updated and expanded edition of The Irresistible Revolution, bestselling author and activist Shane Claiborne challenges us to remember that the Great Commission sends us into the world not just to make believers but to form disciples who know how to love the way God calls us to. In The Irresistible Revolution, Shane describes an authentic faith rooted in belief, action, and love, inviting us into a movement of the Spirit that begins inside each of us and extends into a broken world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Defined as a self-image made with a hand-held mobile device and shared via social media platforms, the selfie has facilitated self-imaging becoming a ubiquitous part of globally networked contemporary life. Beyond this selfies have facilitated a diversity of image making practices and enabled otherwise representationally marginalized constituencies to insert self-representations into visual culture. In the Western European and North American art-historical context, self-portraiture has been somewhat rigidly albeit obliquely defined, and selfies have facilitated a shift regarding who literally holds the power to self-image. Like self-portraits, not all selfies are inherently aesthetically or conceptually rigorous or avant-guard. But, –as this project aims to do address via a variety of interdisciplinary approaches– selfies have irreversibly impacted visual culture, contemporary art, and portraiture in particular. Selfies propose new modes of self-imaging, forward emerging aesthetics and challenge established methods, they prove that as scholars and image-makers it is necessary to adapt and innovate in order to contend with the most current form of self-representation to date. The essays gathered herein will reveal that in our current moment it is necessary and advantageous to consider the merits and interventions of selfies and self-portraiture in an expanded field of self-representations. We invite authors to take interdisciplinary global perspectives, to investigate various sub-genres, aesthetic practices, and lineages in which selfies intervene to enrich the discourse on self-representation in the expanded field today.

Book excerpt: Steve Harvey, the host of the nationally syndicated Steve Harvey Morning Show, can't count the number of impressive women he's met over the years, whether it's through the "Strawberry Letters" segment of his program or while on tour for his comedy shows. Yet when it comes to relationships, they can't figure out what makes men tick. Why? According to Steve it's because they're asking other women for advice when no one but another man can tell them how to find and keep a man. In Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man, Steve lets women inside the mindset of a man and sheds light on concepts and questions such as: The Ninety Day Rule: Ford requires it of its employees. Should you require it of your man? The five questions every woman should ask a man to determine how serious he is. And much more . . . Sometimes funny, sometimes direct, but always truthful, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is a book you must read if you want to understand how men think when it comes to relationships.

With over two million copies sold, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man has become a bestseller around the world. In conjunction with its second movie sequel to be released this summer, Steve Harvey has updated his classic with new advice and insights. Whether it’s why women should enforce a “90-Day Probation Period” before they give their men sexual “benefits”—the way Ford motor company withholds medical and dental benefits until an employee has been on the job for 3 months—or explaining to women why men would rather “fix it” than talk about it, Steve Harvey’s advice is always spot-on and laden with warmth and humor. But behind the laughter is his sincere desire to help women understand men. Now, Steve shares even more relationship wisdom. Does it feel like your man’s friends are against you? What should you know about being a wife, before you say “I Do”? Steve provides the answers to these questions and more, and offers new insights including: How to put spice into your relationship 8 sure-fire ways to keep your cool when his “ex” shows up A test for you and your partner, to see if you’re actually ready for marriage. . . or need more time A 90-day abstinence calendar, and tips for making it through this important trial period With liberal use of his own adventures in love and courtship, Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man is an honest, compelling, and realistic examination of how men think about love and sex and what women need to know so that they can set realistic expectations of the men in their life.
