It may be fleeting and situational or long-lasting and deeply ingrained. Competition, shared belief, tragedy, or a myriad of other factors may contribute to the formation of such group identity. Even people detached from one another by space, anonymity, or time, may find themselves in a context in which individual self-concept is replaced by a collective one. How is collective identity, particularly the long-lasting kind, created and maintained? Many literary and biblical studies have demonstrated that shared stories often lie at the heart of it. This book examines the most repeated story of the Hebrew Bible--the exodus story--to see how it may have functioned to construct and reinforce an enduring collective identity in ancient Israel. A tool based on the principles of the social identity approach is created and used to expose identity construction at a rhetorical level. The author shows that exodus stories are characterized by recognizable language and narrative structures that invite ongoing collective identification.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jaeyoung Jeon examines and assesses recently suggested models for the formation of the Pentateuch through a redactional-critical analysis of the Call of Moses (Exod. 3-4) and the Exodus story (Exod. 5-13). He observes that Exod. 3-4 was formed through a series of stages of Deuteronomistic composition and redaction, to which some post-Priestly additions were made. Comparative analysis suggests that the elements of Deuteronomistic formation precede P and that the direction of influence is from the non-P narrative (Exod. 3-4) to the P call narrative (Exod. 6). Jeon also shows that although some of the literary layers in Exod. 3-4 extend through the Exodus story (Exod. 5-13), the present form of the latter has been shaped by a post-Deuteronomistic but pre-Priestly composition based on an earlier proto-Exodus story. He therefore concludes that the Pentateuch or Hexateuch might be the product of a more complicated process of development than the current models describe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Varner provides a completely up-to-date introduction to the writings of the Apostolic Fathers. These 1st-2nd Century texts are foundational for the early Christian movement, and the interpretation of the New Testament in the earliest days of what was to later become known as Christianity. Beyond introducing the individual writers Varner also presents and situates their writings, with each chapter offering an introduction followed by key texts. Varner translates these works afresh, and situates them in their original contexts. The introductory materials help readers to interpret these various writings and outline the most important scholarly debates around them, whilst also giving readers access to the texts themselves. The book concludes with a chapter that shows how the Apostolic Fathers are relevant in the 21st century, drawing together threads of reception history and modern Christian theology.

Book excerpt: Jesus said, "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God." (Matthew 5:8). The Bible progressively reveals a glorious description of God the Father, beginning with Moses in the book of Genesis and ending with what John saw in the book of Revelation. The author has done massive research showing that the Bible is full of descriptions of the glory of God. This is a unique book, one of kind, about the visual glory of God. It is incredible that nothing has been written about this aspect of the glory of God since one of the basic meanings of glory is visual brilliance and splendor. It is true that no man has seen God because He has hidden him Himself for several reasons. Man would die if he saw Him. Man would make an idol of Him. God desires that man have faith in an unseen God. Many theologians maintain that God cannot be seen, that He has no face or form because He is spirit, invisible, and omnipresent. The book addresses these concepts. Jesus, however, said that He has seen God and that angels see His face. This book should be in the shelves of every seminary, Bible school, minister's study, and in the hand of every person as a help in Bible study or in seeking to know more about God. May it inspire every Christian to anticipate that day in heaven when they shall see Jesus and God the Father.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxious that current interest in and discussion of worship are too much preoccupied with mere mechanics, Dr. Carson joined with an international group of scholars to produce this final volume of the five Tyndale Consultations. First, a biblical theology of worship is explored by the Japanese, Yoshiaki Hattori, and the Australian, David Peterson. From this foundation, there follow reflections upon the practice of worship in nine different contexts: denominational (including Anglicanism and Lutheranism), cultural (South America and the Two Thirds World), and also the charismatic movement and student groups. In the final part, the Croat theologian Miroslav Volf concludes that worship is "the outworking of God-centredness in individual and corporate experience'. The opinions expressed, although at times in disagreement with one another, are an indication of the wealth of diversity within the worldwide church.

They are intended as starting points to put the user on the track of further information found in the many references in the text itself. The index of Hebrew words and phrases contains an overview of almost all the terms used in Exodus. Omitted are prepositions and some pronouns and particles. Personal and geographical names are included in the index of subjects. He also took the opportunity to make many bibliographical additions, especially of recent literature.

Book excerpt: This commentary interprets the first part of the book of Exodus, through 15:21. It features two approaches. On the one hand, the commentary interprets the final form of the traditional Hebrew text "synchronically" by means of form criticism and modern literary methods. On the other hand, it "diachronically" reconstructs the predecessors of the final form, from its origins in an exodus composition that opposes political domination to the text's final form as a dramatic narrative about the transfer of sovereignty from the Pharaoh to the God of Israel. Concluding syntheses examine the relationship between these two interpretive approaches while adding reflections on traditional and contemporary concerns.

He flat lined; his spirit and soul left his body, and he became aware of what was transpiring around him. There were no bright lights, no tunnels, and no one waiting to meet him. Tom could see the operating table and watched the efforts to revive him. It was after this experience that Tom began to seriously consider the sophisticated and complex nature of dueling realities; the spiritual and physical realms are very real. An understanding of life in two separate realities significantly alters our understanding as Author Tom Newman explains in A Brief History of the Bible. This informative and biblically-based book gives great insight for those curious about what the bible has to say over this topic and how it works harmoniously within itself to present us theological truth. Tom did not find the answers in the sciences, psychology or philosophy. The Bible seemed to hold the best possibilities for answers and after a twenty-year-study of Scripture, Tom found the answers to his questions about life and death. Tom Newman currently resides in Eden Prairie, New Mexico.
