Book excerpt: Excerpt from Existing Glaciers of the United States For convenience of reference we will divide glaciers into alpine and continental; not that the two classes are always distinct and separable, but for the reason that typical examples of each are well characterized and capable of specific description. Variations occur in each class which may suggest minor subdivisions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Characteristics of Existing Glaciers It has been the common practice to treat the subject of glaciation as if all ice masses having inherent motion of whatever nature were governed by the same laws. Thus the most recent and authoritative work upon the subject has treated the glaciers of Greenland and Switzerland together. The aim of the present work has been rather to emphasize the wide differences in other than dimensional respects which separate such bodies, and to show that the law's which govern their nourishment and depletion, and their reaction with the lithosphere as well, are by no means identical. The broad line of cleavage is found to he between those glaciers which completely cover a considerable portion of the rock surface, and have the form of a flat dome or shield, and the remaining types. These latter glaciers being all restricted to maintain districts have been designated mountain glaciers, and they have been found to bear very simple relations to each other, dependent upon the measure of their nourishment and waste. Alimentation being in turn dependent upon climatic conditions, all are brought in order within the cycle of changes which correspond to a period of increasingly rigorous climate followed in turn by more genial conditions - the cycle of glaciation. Throughout the attempt has been to emphasize the broader physiographic elements of the problem and to show the relations to alimentation and depletion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coastal Glaciers of Prince William Sound and Kenai Peninsula, Alaska During the summer of 1905 the senior author and Sidney Paige were engaged in a study of the ore deposits and the general geology of Prince William Sound. This work was continued in 1908 for a few weeks by both the present authors, who in 1909 extended it to the southern part of Kenai Peninsula. In these three field seasons the whole shore line of Prince William Sound (except that of some of the islands) and of Kenai Peninsula from Portage Bay to Seldovia Bay Of Cook Inlet was examined. In the course of this work all the tidewater glaciers and many others near tidewater were seen and some notes, photographs, and maps were made of all the tidewater glaciers and of many Of the others. This work was hurriedly done and was secondary to the study of the bedrock geology and the ore deposits; nevertheless it is thought worth while to put on record the information thus Obtained regarding the glaciers, for it will afford a basis for future study of the fluctuations of these ice streams. This paper, then, is not expected to make many additions to the large amount of scientific material concerning the problems of glaciers and glaciation that is already available, but it is intended to supply some definite information regarding the present positions of the fronts of the glaciers and the more evident facts of their fluctuations. Moreover, it is hoped that this publication may attract attention to some of the most magnificent American scenery that is now accessible to the tourist and nature lover. Except the Columbia Glacier, the glaciers of Port Wells, and possibly one or two others, the ice streams here considered had not been figured nor described before this study was undertaken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annals of the Association of American Geographers, 1912, Vol. 2 Russell has made known to us through his studies of the Malaspina Glacier. The main region of existing glaciers occupies a roughly semi circular area sweeping from the southern boundary of Alaska, north ward, westward 'and southwestward, toward the Aleutian islands. From either end of this zone both the number and the size of the glaciers increase, and the elevation of their termini decreases, attain ing maximum development near the center of the semicircle that surrounds the head of the Gulf of Alaska. Altogether there are at least forty-seven tidal glaciers in this zone, the southeastern-most being the Le Conte Glacier, just north of Wrangell, and the western most the mccarty Glacier on Kenai peninsula. Toward the ends of the glacier zone there are few and scattered instances of tidal glaciers; but in the central part of the zone they are numerous, and, where topographic conditions favor, are close together. Thus in Glacier Bay there are at least twelve tidal glaciers; in Yakutat Bay three; and in Prince William Sound twenty. (see Plate I). How many glaciers there are in this coastal area cannot be even approximately estimated; but, counting large and small, tributaries and main ice streams, they are certainly to be numbered by the thousand. These vary in size from tiny ice masses in cirques, to valley glaciers two or three miles in breadth, and thirty or forty miles in length; and up to the great Malaspina Glacier whose area is estimated to be square miles. From the Kenai peninsula to Cross Sound a very large proportion of the seaward face of the mountains is covered with snow and ice, and glaciers exist in a majority of the valleys, filling most of the larger ones. From Con troller Bay to Cross Sound a succession of piedmont glaciers and expanded bulbs of individual glaciers spread out between the moun tain base and the sea. A journey along this coast is, therefore, a constant glacial panorama. Distribution of Existing Glaciers - The mountains which fringe the Alaskan coast as a continuous barrier, as far west as Cook Inlet, attain their greatest elevation in the St. Elias-fairweather Range where peaks rise to feet, feet in Mount St. Elias, and feet in Mount Logan. Here, naturally, the glaciers are largest, for from this central area the general elevation, as well as the heights of the peaks, diminishes toward both the southeast and the west. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Glaciers of Switzerland and North Wales Ever since the publication of De Saussure's great work on the Alps, the subject of glaciers has claimed a considerable and increasing share of the attention of scientific writers. The gathering of the snow in the higher mountain regions, its conversion into solid ice, the inner structure and movements of glaciers, their ancient extension and erosive action on their rocky beds, the origin of crevasses, moraines, and many other attendant phenomena, have all been the subjects of discussion; and in the writings of De Saussure, Charpentier, Agassiz, and James Forbes, the charms of style and Bgraphic; 1kastration have invested these questions with. An interest felt far beyond the circle of purely. Scientific readers. The subject has, how ev'er, many bearings besides those relating to existing glaciers, and in the following pages I propose chiefly to confine myself to that part 0 of the history and antiquities of the glacier world the origin of which, though lost 1n the far backward and abysm of time, yet, in a. Geological sense, so little preceded our own day, that the larger contours of hill and valley as they yet stand were already in existence, and probably all the forms of mollusca now living even then inhabited the northern seas. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glaciers of North America: A Reading Lesson for Students of Geography and Geology Until within the past few years, nearly all current knowledge of glaciers was based on 'the study of those of the Alps. Practically all theories of the origin, growth, motion, etc., of glaciers were inspired from the same source. An enlargement of the field of study, however, has shown not only that glaciers of the same type as those of Switzerland exist in many other lands, but in numerous instances are larger and present greater diversity; and besides, additional types or "genera" have been discovered that are not represented in Europe or in fact on any of the three continents of the Eastern Hemisphere. As geological and geographical explorations have been extended, it has been found that North America is not only a favorable field for the growth of these twin sciences, bat in many ways furnishes the best example of continental development that has as yet been studied. Strange as it may appear in the face of the overshadowing popular interest that centers in the glaciers of the Alps, North America offers more favorable conditions for the study of existing glaciers and of the records of ancient ice sheets than any other continent. Of each of the three leading types of glaciers thus far reorganized, namely, the alpine, piedmont, and continental, North America furnishes magnificent examples. In fact there is no other continent, except the little known region about the South Pole, in which other than the alpine type of glaciers exist. Of alpine glaciers representatives occur in North America in abundance and in great variety, ranging from the "pocket editions" about the summits of the High Sierra, California, to the magnificent Seward glacier, Alaska, the largest river of ice flowing from a mountain group that has yet been discovered.
