This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of the Works of Ivan Mestrovic We heard that Ivan Mestrovie the sculptor, who, with the assistance of some Serbian associates and pupils, had designed and modelled the statuary, was still a young man in the early thirties, and that 'the pavilion, statuary and paintings were all the work of a body of young serbo-croat artists gathered from Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Dalmatia, to work together under the ag of Serbia and the leadership of Mestrovic - a national efi'ort inspired by a single fury of national memories and aspirations that is without parallel in modern art. It had a burning spirit within it that seemed to throb and gesture through these forms as a tempest speaks through the new and fantastic shapes it gives to the trees in its grasp, or the announcements of the tongues and crowns of ame in a forest con agration. Book excerpt: Discovered by a master stonemason at the age of 16 in a small village in the hills above the Dalmation coast in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Mestrovic trained at the Art Academy in Vienna, and went on to exhibit his work in Paris, Belgrade, Rome and across the US. His work in bronze and stone, adopting the Art Noveau style, was feted by the likes of Auguste Rodin. Probably his most famous works are the gargantuan Gregory of Nin, and The Victor, but he also produced a great many other monumental sculptures with themes drawn from epic moments in Slavic History.

Book Synopsis Urban Architectures in Interwar Yugoslavia by : Tanja D. Conley
Download or read book Urban Architectures in Interwar Yugoslavia written by Tanja D. Conley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resulting from a twenty-year period of research, this book seeks to challenge contradictions between the concepts of national and modern architectures promoted among the most pronounced national groups of Yugoslavia: Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. It spans from the beginning of their nation-building programs in the mid-nineteenth century until the collapse of unified South Slavic ideology and the outbreak of the Second World War. Organized into two parts, it sheds new light onto the question of how two conflicting political agendas – on one side the quest for integral Yugoslavism and, on the other, the fight for strictly separate national identities – were acknowledged through the architecture and urbanism of Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana. Drawing wider conclusions, author Tanja D. Conley investigates boundaries between two opposing yet interrelated tendencies characterizing the architectural professional in the age of modernity: the search for authenticity versus the strive towards globalization. Urban Architectures in Interwar Yugoslavia will appeal to researchers, academics and students interested in Central and Eastern European architectural history.
