Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Latin Etymology A conviction of this fact led the author of this small work, many years since, to prepare abook of Latin Exercises, adapt ed to the illustration of each division of Andrews and Stoddard's Latin Grammar. That volume was arranged in such a manner as to be used with convenience from the time when the stu dent commenced the study of the Grammar; and, in connec tion with the Quest1ons adapted to the sarrie Grammar, was designed so to illustrate its leading principles, as to leave no doubt concerning their true intent and proper application. It is in such connection that those works have been generally used 1n the best schools of New England, and in this way only can the true value of either work be fairly estimated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises on Etymology The English tongue presents so great a variety of elements, that the study of its Etymology affords an acquaintance with many other languages, tending to familiarise the student not only with modern German - one branch of the same Teutonic family as that to which English belongs - but also with Greek and Latin - and with French, Spanish, and Italian, which the dead languages originally helped to form. Many efforts have been successfully made of late to render the access to Latin and Greek inviting to the pupil, by a knowledge of Latin roots existing in English words; but as yet little has been done in school-books to make the existence of Teutonic words in our language available for ascertaining the roots of Saxon-English words, and for familiarising the memory with the kindred words of the modern German. This want is attempted to be supplied in the present volume. But Etymology should have higher aims. It should exhibit the roots of a language which has long since ceased to be spoken; and, connecting these with those of other vanished tongues, lead to the recognition of a language the common parent of many others, and to the confirmation of the truth of one primitive language. Etymology should also point out the similar character of all lingual changes - a similarity arising from the common nature of man. These subjects have occupied the attention of eminent modern philologists; and in few departments of science or literature have such instructive discoveries been lately made as in those which concern the transmigration of languages. The Exercises and Extracts in this volume, therefore, have been so arranged, as to lay the basis of such habits of inquiry as will lead the learner into the right track of general, as well as of philological, investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Etymological Dictionary of the Latin Language But it will be said that there are numerous words which we cannot show to be taken from the Greeks. Doubtless it is so, although the number of such words is constantly decreasing. When Vossius published his Etymology, he was ignorant that Pruina was nothing but So it was with numerous Other words. And future generations will probably supply from the Greek sound derivations of words, which to this time have been investigated in vain. Such words we have, as far as we have been able, traced on the one hand to the Northern, on the other to the Oriental languages. Not that these sources have been exhausted: much doubtless might have been added, but it is hoped that not a few valuable analogies have been here collected, and that on the whole the claims of the Northern and Eastern languages have received a patient and an attentive hearing. One word in regard to the Hebrew. Mr. Horne Tooke thus expresses his objection to the derivation of Latin from that lan guage. It is a most erroneous practice, he says, of the Latin Etymologists to fly to the Hebrew for whatever they cannot find in the Greek -for the Romans were not a mixed colony of Greeks and Jews, but of Greeks and Goths, as the whole of the Latin language most plainly evinces. This seems a reasonable proposition yet I have not omitted to indulge the fancy of those who are not persuaded by it. Mr. Tate is of opinion that the Latin language came in great measure from the Sanskrit. Dr. Jones too carries us to the Indians. The note on Latus, borne, supplies the Reader with an instance of this kind. Barrus and other words will be found traced toan Indian source. Mr. Tate cites the following passage from Sir William Jones: The first race of Persians and Indians, to whom we may add the Romans and Greeks, the Goths and the old Egyptians or Ethiops, originally spoke the same language. This principle has been adopted in the initial stages of this book, and the pupil is recommended to carry out the method, as far as practicable, in all subsequent exercises. Only the most obvious English derivatives are given. With regard to the extent and character of the Vocabulary, we may say that it has been taken chiefly, though not exclusively, from Caesar, and especially from that part of Caesar prescribed for Pass University Matriculation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Etymology of Latin and Greek The following work had its origin in a felt want. Many students of the classical languages, all along the early part of their course, use text-books provided with vocabularies. These vocabularies, from the necessity of their limits, are brief and imperfect, and they enter but little into the subj ect of etymology. Even When afterwards the lexicon is used, the etymology is often studied only for separate words as they occur in reading; and the scattered and fragmentary information given in the lexicons pro duces a corresponding state of knowledge in the mind even of a diligent student. No connected, systematic, or thorough knowledge of etymology is thus acquired. In the grammar something may be done for historical ety mology; but the requirements of other topics in a school grammar must always prevent this subject from receiving there the full treatment Which its importance demands.
