Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises at the Celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Signing of the Charter of Tufts College, April 21, 1902 Have regard unto us now in the occasion which has called us together. Here in this presence, and on this mid-century charter-day we renew our affection for the venerable and fostering Commonwealth whose will and hand sent us forth at first; and we pledge thought, and faith, and hope to a wider and wider fellowship of learning, and to a more joyous sacrifice and service. What wait we for now but for Thy blessing, that peace and light may more and more be shed abroad from this place: that so thy kingdom may come and thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Celebration of the Semi-Centennial of Tufts College, 1905 On December 31, 1901, the Trustees and the Overseers appointed a general committee, to arrange for celebrating the semi-centennial of Tufts College, as follows: Rev. F. W. Hamilton, D.D., chairman; Rev. W. E. Gibbs, D.D.; Byron Groce, Litt.D.; Arthur E. Denison, A.B.; Arthur E. Mason, A.M.; Edward H. Clement, Litt.D.; Rev. W. H. Rider, D.D.; Leo Rich Lewis, A.M.; Chas. Neal Barney, A.B., secretary. On November 2, 1903, a committee, consisting of President Capen and Professors Hooper and Lewis, was appointed by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences to nominate a committee to represent that faculty in arranging for the celebration. On December 7 the following committee was duly nominated and appointed: Professors Anthony, Wren, Whittemore, Harmon, and H. G. Chase. Later, Professor Denison was substituted for Professor Anthony, and Professor Chase was made chairman of this local committee. These committees were prosecuting their work vigorously, under the direction of President Capen, and with his active cooperation, when his death, March 22, 1905, on the eve of the celebration, cast a shadow over all the succeeding exercises. The program agreed upon was carried out, however, with a few modifications. The baccalaureate sermon was given in Goddard Chapel by Rev. F.W. Hamilton, D.D., on June 11, and one week later Commemoration Sunday was celebrated, Rev. W.H. Rider, D.D., preaching the sermon. The exercises of Commemoration Sunday began with the unveiling of a bronze bust of Rev. Alonzo Ames Miner, D.D., second president of Tufts College. The act of unveiling was performed by Dr. Miner's great-grandnephew. Master Rollin Parker Adams. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A "must" introduction to significant African-American events & people in Massachusetts where so much American history began. The first slaves arrived in Boston in 1638; the first Black gave his life in the Boston Massacre. Entries are dramatic bullet-style cameos set off by more than 100 photographs. Arranged chronologically within a dozen categories--Science, Religion, Government, Creative Arts, among them--the elegantly designed paperback offers instant identification of names & invites follow up research--a catalyst "to find out more." Among the entries: a high school student wins ten dollars in gold for her essay on the "Evils of Intemperance"; a physician fights for the right to deliver babies at the city hospital; Blacks unite in protest against the film BIRTH OF A NATION; a Boston mechanic invents a diving suit & a dentist invents a golf tee. The BOSTON GLOBE calls it a book that explores the "rich heritage & legacy of leaders who lived here but had an impact upon all America--including Frederick Douglass, William DuBois, Phillis Wheatley, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." An executive of Bank of Boston, which funded the publication, calls it "a book about dreams." And the dreams came true. Available through Publisher's Sales Office--666 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116, Tele-(617)-536-5400. xt 346.

This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of the international community in the handover of the Dutch colony of West Papua/Irian Jaya to Indonesia in the 1960s and questions whether or not the West Papuan people ever genuinely exercised the right to self-determination guaranteed to them in the UN-brokered Dutch/Indonesian agreement of 1962. Indonesian, Dutch, US, Soviet, Australian and British involvement is discussed, but particular emphasis is given to the central part played by the United Nations in the implementation of this agreement. As guarantor, the UN temporarily took over the territory's administration from the Dutch before transferring control to Indonesia in 1963. After five years of Indonesian rule, a UN team returned to West Papua to monitor and endorse a controversial act of self-determination that resulted in a unanimous vote by 1022 Papuan 'representatives' to reject independence. Despite this, the issue is still very much alive today as a crisis-hit Indonesia faces continued armed rebellion and growing calls for freedom in West Papua.

Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.
