Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investment in executive education has grown steadily since its inception during the last century. Several studies have attempted to measure the effectiveness of executive programs; prior research has indicated that some programs lack relevance. This study addressed the topic from the perspective of corporations, whose future executive education decisions are affected by the relevance of current programs, and program alumni. In a partial replication of a 1959 Harvard study, which queried graduates of 39 residential programs, I surveyed the 1993-1995 executive MBA graduates of four schools: UCLA, University of Colorado, University of Utah, and University of Washington. The main research question was: Are executive education programs meeting the needs of their mid-career students ? In addition to the above, the changing workplace prompted the following queries: Is there a difference between the satisfaction of the students with the programs in 1959 and now? Are the programs affected by lack of security in the workplace. Are people using the EMBA to change employers? Do sponsoring companies use the skills learned? Do women have a problem with the 'glass ceiling'? In addition to collecting the surveys, I interviewed the four program directors, 10 corporate executives whose responsibilities include executive education, and 24 of the 157 alumni who returned the questionnaire. Frequency distribution, correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression were used to analyze the survey data. The major findings were: EMBA students today are satisfied with the relevance of their education; Students are dissatisfied with schools that employ professors with outdated or inadequate teaching skills; Instability in today's workplace is prompting some people to change jobs or go into their own business once their EMBA is completed; Corporations will continue to invest in these programs, but there is more specific succession planning in conjunction with the career path expected for the employee; There continues to be little ethnic diversity in the programs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Getting Down to Business Mervin Daub and Bruce Buchan trace the origins of this institution to the present day. In its first eighty years the School has grown and changed, greatly expanding the range of programs it offers to a dramatically increased number of undergraduates and graduates. A series of programs for executives and a productive and research-oriented faculty also demonstrate the growth and dynamic achievements of the School. This success is even more remarkable when it is recognized that it took place far from the commercial centres of Canada and the United States. Getting Down to Business is the fascinating story of Queen's School of Business, and of the men and women who recognized that there was a growing demand for professionally trained managers and ensured that Queen's would play a leading role in addressing that need.

Emphasizing brevity and clarity, it gives technical staff answers to their most pressing questions about economics, finance, marketing, strategic decision-making, accounting, management, and related subjects. It does not offer condensed 1st year MBA courses; instead, it presents streamlined concepts and insights that are easy enough to be accessible and challenging enough to hold one's interest. Its examples from pharma, IT, aircraft/navigation, and other industries highlight problems that technical professionals face daily. Written by "one of them," its credibility makes it more useful than Internet resources. Because it concentrates on pragmatic (as opposed to academic) approaches to business, it empowers technical staff to stay with the conversation--and take it to a higher level. Bertrand C. Liang, MD, PhD, MBA, is Managing Director of LCC Ventures and Executive Director of Pfenex, Inc. He is trained in molecular biology and genetics (PhD) and is a clinician (MD) with subspecialty training in neurology and oncology, and serves as a Visiting University Professor at Liaoning He University, Shenyang, China. Creates frameworks and builds concepts enabling technical staff to work with their business colleagues Delivers content for pragmatic, immediate use, not condensed presentations of subjects from first year MBA curriculum Extends readers' grasp by posting additional resources at a freely-available website

Book excerpt: Replete with engaging stories and written in a down-to-earth style, this book provides the first and only road map for finding success and happiness in life's most common yet underrated role—that of the follower. What kinds of behaviors and responses do most bosses want from those they lead? Which jobs seem desirable and exciting but present work conditions in which followers are likely to fail or be unhappy? What's the best way to communicate bad and good news to a superior? Winning at Following: Secrets to Success in Supporting Roles answers these questions and covers many more topics that are highly relevant to everyone, for those who report to others as well as for managers, directors, CEOs, or other acting leaders. Individuals who are satisfied in their roles as followers will discover information that helps them to optimize their success and fulfillment at work, while dissatisfied followers—anyone struggling as a follower and searching for directions for positive change—will find this book extremely valuable as a road map to greater meaning, success, and satisfaction at work and in life. Readers will gain the critical direction and tools for fulfillment in their roles as followers—in whatever capacity that may be—and understand what they need to do to please their superiors as well as to solve the common problems and challenges that followers face. The book also explains how individuals can identify their followership style and discover the types of organizations where they are most likely to thrive. The final chapter provides guidance on how to overcome common, serious problems that followers experience, such as micromanaging bosses, sexual harassment, unethical directives from superiors, and disrespectful colleagues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Career transitions in psychiatry have rarely been discussed openly. Yet, in the light of health care reform and other forces affecting clinical practice, it is more important than ever that psychiatrists have information about the career options within their specialty. Career Pathways in Psychiatry: Transition in Changing Times serves that purpose. It explores the professional development and career choices of prominent American psychiatrists, each of whom is identified with a particular career track and many of whom have themselves experienced one or more career transitions. The autobiographical accounts of the contributors survey a wide range of career pathways in psychiatry, including clinical practice, HMO practice, research, administration, entrepreneurism, psychoanalysis, organized medicine, the pharmaceutical industry, public psychiatry, occupational psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and military psychiatry. These accounts are as engaging as they are informative; their anecdotal nature and conversational tone make for pleasurable reading. References at the end of each chapter serve as recommended reading for those who wish to learn more about specific career options. Intended for psychiatric residents and psychiatrists early in their careers, Career Pathways in Psychiatry will also appeal to their more experienced colleagues, including seasoned clinicians who have contemplated career changes. With a preface summarizing research on career transitions in medicine and numerous chapters shedding light on factors contributing to resistance to change, this book will also be of interest to social scientists, mental health administrators, and professional recruiters.
