Senior administrators and faculty members are projected to retire in vast numbers creating a leadership shortage in community colleges. To address the shortage, Grow Your Own (GYO) leadership development programs are supported by literature as a primary solution. The purpose of this research was to describe success factors for implementing GYO leadership development programs in community colleges. This study investigated the behaviors or actions necessary to implement a GYO leadership development program, pros and cons related to implementation, confidence to implement, and the change processes utilized to facilitate implementation. Interviewed were 10 program coordinators who represented 19 community colleges in Texas and states in the Middle Atlantic Region of the United States (Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia). The success factors that emerged were (a) support, (b) research, (c) development, and (d) appraisal. Support refers to obtaining assistance from within and outside the college. Research involves benchmarking other GYO programs and identifying instructional objectives. Development refers to developing the instructional strategy used to achieve objectives and selecting the instructional material to facilitate GYO learning. Appraisal refers to assessing the effectiveness of the program during application as well as assessing the program effectiveness post program application. The findings in this study offer preliminary evidence of success factors and strategies for implementing a GYO leadership development program in community colleges.

Book excerpt: The workplace is the ideal environment for tying together management theory and practice and yet, classes in many regular management development programs are conducted away from the work site, and class sizes are so large that individual instruction is difficult to achieve. In this book, the authors seek effective ways to merge theory with workplace practice, and advocate the modular preceptor method whereby participants work together in dyads and triads with a preceptor acting as advisor and instructor. Unlike traditional management development programs which do not usually lead to behavior changes, the modular preceptor model has behavior change as the basic aim. Participants can remain at work while experiencing individualized learning, developing problem solving skills, and acquiring new knowledge which can be immediately applied to work situations. Various ways of learning, such as passive (lecture, case study, discussion) and experiential (role playing, games, sensitivity training) are examined. No single mode of learning can be comprehensive and adequate for all situations. The authors contend, however, that experiential learning is most effective for increasing the will and competence to learn and for using what is learned to change manager behavior. The purpose of the modular preceptor approach is not to present answers to specific managerial or organizational problems, but to help the participant acquire new problem definition and problem solving skills, and the confidence to apply them on the job. This book also analyzes the contribution of the behavioral sciences to the philosophies and techniques behind management instruction, and examines the role of the university in management development and the future direction of MBA programs. For anyone concerned with meaningful and effective management development, this book is an invaluable resource.

Due to the increasing complexity and changing needs of our society, expectations of leaders are on the increase. But what characterises a good leader? In order to be successful, leaders must think positively, be authentic, be able to reflect on their behaviour and continually develop. The author, experienced CEO Georg A. Kapeller, shows how leaders can strengthen their leadership skills in everyday life and avoid stumbling blocks. In doing so, they will gain fulfilment and satisfaction in their leadership tasks and learn to recognise what is important in leadership: taking responsibility, inspiring a team, creating the right habits, conveying a sense of purpose and avoiding extreme positions – and thus achieving goals over the long term. The focus is on self-leadership, with resilience at its core. Dynamic, energetic and inspirational leaders have a contagious and motivating effect on those around them.

Comprised of 17 chapters, the book explains the FISMA legislation and its provisions, strengths and limitations, as well as the expectations and obligations of federal agencies subject to FISMA. It also discusses the processes and activities necessary to implement effective information security management following the passage of FISMA, and it describes the National Institute of Standards and Technology's Risk Management Framework. The book looks at how information assurance, risk management, and information systems security is practiced in federal government agencies; the three primary documents that make up the security authorization package: system security plan, security assessment report, and plan of action and milestones; and federal information security-management requirements and initiatives not explicitly covered by FISMA. This book will be helpful to security officers, risk managers, system owners, IT managers, contractors, consultants, service providers, and others involved in securing, managing, or overseeing federal information systems, as well as the mission functions and business processes supported by those systems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do corporate culture and leadership contribute to a firm's success? And if so, how? How can a company create and develop its corporate culture to compete successfully over the long term? Answers to these questions emerge in case studies of the business practices of six long-established and world-renowned companies: the BMW Group, Deutsche Lufthansa, Grundfos, Henkel, Hilti and Novo Nordisk. In a project initiated by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, researchers investigated these firms and analyzed the central characteristics of corporate success from a culture perspective. The case studies render a detailed picture of each firm's distinctive corporate culture and the factors that shape it. Based on these examples, Sonja A. Sackmann has identified concrete strategies and practices that illustrate how a company's management can make a significant contribution toward developing a dialogue-oriented corporate culture that supports a firm's viability. The appendix provides a checklist for readers who want to develop their firm's culture and practice culturally aware management.
