Book excerpt: We have used the variational and fractional-dimensional space approaches in a study of the virial theorem value and scaling of the shallow-donor binding energies versus donor Bohr radius in GaAs-(Ga, Al)As semiconductor quantum wells and quantum-well wires. A comparison is made with previous results with respect to exciton states. In the case the donor ground-state wave function may be approximated by a D-dimensional hydrogenic wave function, the virial theorem value equals 2 and the scaling rule for the donor binding energy versus quantum-sized Bohr radius is hyperbolic, both for quantum wells and wires. In contrast, calculations within the variational scheme show that the scaling of the donor binding energies with quantum-sized Bohr radius is in general nonhyperbolic and that the virial theorem value is nonconstant.

Book excerpt: This invaluable book is devoted to the physics, technology and device applications of semiconductor structures with ultrathin layers where the electronic properties are governed by the quantum-mechanical laws. Such structures called quantum wells or structures with the two-dimensional electron gas, have become one of the most actively investigated objects in modern solid state physics. Electronic properties of quantum wells differ dramatically from those of bulk semiconductors, which allows one to observe new types of physical phenomena, such as the quantum Hall effect and many other so-far-unknown kinetic and optical effects. This, in turn, offers wide opportunities for creating semiconductor devices based on new principles, and it has give birth to the new branch of electronics called nanoelectronics.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor Quantum Well Intermixing is an international collection of research results dealing with several aspects of the diffused quantum well (DFQW), ranging from Physics to materials and device applications. The material covered is the basic interdiffusion mechanisms of both cation and anion groups as well as the properties of band structure modifiations. Its comprehensive coverage of growth and pos-growth processing technologies along with its presentation of the various interesting and advanced features of the DFQW materials make this book an essential reference to the study of QW layer intermixing.

Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the International Meeting on Confined Excitons held in Rome in April 1987. The aim of the meeting was to discuss excitons confined in a variety of systems from semi-infinite solids to quantum wells. In the part on excitons in semi-infinite solids, the long-running discussion on exciton reflectance, involving the concepts of additional boundary conditions and the dead layer, is summarized and extended. The papers on excitons in thin films and in "thick" quantum wells bridge the gap between semi-infinite semiconductors and the usual quantum wells, presenting interesting results on exciton quantization. The third part reports many new results in the recently developed area of excitons in quantum wells and on the very new topic of excitons in quantum wires. Knowledge of the quantum well properties is an important aspect in the determination of exciton states, so tutorial articles on the growth and band structure of quantum wells are also included.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Interfaces, Quantum Wells and Superlattices" was held from August 16th to 29th, 1987, in Banff, Alberta, Canada. This volume contains most of the lectures that were given at the Institute. A few of the lectures had already been presented at an earlier meeting and appear instead in the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Super lattices" held in Erice from April 21st to May 1st earlier in the year and published by Plenum Press. The study of semiconductor interfaces, quantum wells and super lattices has come to represent a substantial proportion of all work in condensed matter physics. In a sense the growth of interest in this area, which began to accelerate about 10 years ago and seems to be continuing, has been driven by technological developments. While the older generation of semiconductor devices was based on adjacent semiconductors with different properties (e. g. different doping levels) separated by interfaces, modern semiconductor devices tend to be based more and more on properties of the interfaces themselves. This has led, as an example, to the field of band-structure engineering. Improved understanding of the fundamental physics of these systems has aided technological developments and, in turn, technological developments have made available systems which exhibit novel and fascinating phYSical properties, such as the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects.

Book excerpt: This book contains the lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Superlattices", held in Erice, Italy, on April 21-May 1, 1987. This course was the fourth one of the International School of Solid-State Device Research, which is under the auspices of the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture. In the last ten years, we have seen an enormous increase in re search in the field of Semiconductor Heterostructures, as evidenced by the large percentage of papers presented in recent international conferences on semiconductor physics. Undoubtfully, this expansion has been made possible by dramatic advances in materials preparation, mostly by molecular beam epitaxy and organometallic chemical vapor deposition. The emphasis on epitaxial growth that was prevalent at the beginning of the decade (thus, the second course of the School, held in 1983, was devoted to Molecular Beam Epitaxy and Heterostructures) has given way to a strong interest in new physical phenomena and new material structures, and to practical applications that are already emerging from them.
