Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rational Test: Bible Doctrine in the Light of Reason To show that certain fundamental biblical doc trines, as held by orthodox believers, are reasonable that is the chief purpose of this volume. The author's position is that reason should not be placed above the Bible; that is rationalism. Very often the proper attitude of the human mind before God's truth is, Believing where we cannot prove. It is not ir rational that it should be so, for in many of the coma monest affairs of life We must Often walk by faith, and not by sightIt is incorrect to think that faith and reason are opposed to each other. This error springs from the supposition that faith and credulity are synonymous terms. So far from this being true, it is an undisputed fact that many of the wisest and best men of the world possess the most childlike faith in Christ and His revelation. Superior knowledge makes a man con scious of the limitations of human learning, and, there fore, leads to humble trust and a childlike disposition. Whether faith is rational or not depends upon its Object. Faith in that which is true and right is a most rational act of the soul blindly to accept error is credulity, and is, therefore, irrational. It can not only, by inherent force, hold its own position against all assaults, but it can furnish efficient support to other parts of the system of divine truth. The writer hopes that the following essay, which he modestly offers to the public, will tend to sustain this proposition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Transcendent Use of the Principle of Causality in Kant, Herbart and Lotze: A Dissertation to Obtain the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leipzig Our definite topic is conveyed in the words: The Doctrine of the Transcendent Use of the Principle of Causality in Kant, Herbart and Lotze. The language is from Kant, and is used in the Kantian sense. We are the recipients of sensations and perceptions which con stitute a world of experience within ourselves. All philosophers admit, for some reason satisfactory to themselves, that within this world of experience the principle of causality finds a proper application. But our sensations are not themselves the things which may be supposed to lie at their base as their cause, and the question arises whether we can pass out over the boundaries of this experimental world, and affirm anything by help of our principle of a world beyond. If so, this would be to make a transcendent use of the principle (pure Reason p. It is proposed, then, to examine the systems of these philosophers so far as may be necessary to give a clear view of their opinions upon this subject. We shall ask What they teach, endeavor to find the reasons which they give for their doctrine, compare their views with one another, and endeavor to estimate the positive results gained for philosophical science by the combined labors of the three. In this investigation our attention will be particularly directed to their views in reference to the two topics suggested above, the Ding an sick, to make use of Kant's term or the external cause of our sensations, and God. These will suffice to illustrate the doctrine of the three writers, and afi'ord sufficient materials for criticism. But under the former head one department, that of the soul considered in itself, will be for the most part excluded, as affording nothing for our purpose not gained from the consideration of the material world, and as leading us into too prolonged discussion for our present limits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret Doctrine, Vol. 2: The Synthesis of Science, Religion, and Philosophy; Anthropogenesis Modern Science insists upon the doctrine of evolution; so do human reason and the Secret Doctrine, and the idea is corroborated by the ancient legends and myths, and even by the Bible itself, when it is read between the lines. We see a flower slowly developing from a bud, and the bud from its seed. But whence the latter, with all its predetermined programme of physical transforma tion, and its invisible, therefore spiritual, forces which gradually develop its form, colour, and odour? The word evolution speaks for itself. The germ of the present human race must have preexisted in the parent of this race, as the seed, in which lies hidden the flower of next summer, was developed in the capsule of its parent flower; the parent may be but slightly different, but it still differs from its future progeny. The antediluvian ancestors of the present elephant and lizard were, perhaps, the mammoth and the plesiosaurus; why should not the progenitors of our human race have been the giants of the Vedas, the Voluspa, and the Book of Genesis? While it is positively absurd to believe the transformation of species to have taken place according to some of the more material istic views of the Evolutionists, it is but natural to think that each genus, beginning with the. Excerpt: ...percipit, -nisi per ideas atfectionum sui corporis.' And in the corollary to prop. 29, the conclusion of the whole matter is summed up, that the human soul, in so far as it contemplates things according to the common order of nature, cannot attain to adequate but only to confused and partial knowledge either of itself, its own body, or external things. In reference to Space and Time, Spinoza also gives expression to views which seem like a-faint foreshadowing of the Kantian doctrine. Even in the Cogitata Metaphysica he says (cap. 4) that the duration of a thing is non nisi ratione distinguishable from its existence, and that this accordingly is a token of its existence, but by no means of its essence. 111 like manner he observes in the passage above quoted (p. 202, note) that there can be no real agreement between actual things and the modi imaginandi; and he includes among these entia rationis, ' tempus, numerus, mensura et si quae alia sunt.' He expresses himself most clearly in the 29th Letter 1, where he distinguishes the knowledge which is limited by space and time from the true knowledge 1 Opera, ed. princ. p. 467. which deals with the eternal, infinite, and indivisible substance1: 'Moreover since we can determine duration and quantity at will, conceiving the latter apart from substance, and the former apart from its relation to things eternal, time and measure (space) come into being; time to determine duration, and measure to determine quantity, in order that we may imagine them as easily as possible. Then because we separate the affections of substance from the substance itself, and classify them, in order that we may imagine them the more easily, azumter originates, whereby we determine the same. This doctrine worked as the basis of the Italian Fascist Party and influenced numerous fascist movements and individuals that followed. "Fascism, the more it considers and observes the future and the development of humanity quite apart from political considerations of the moment, believes neither in the possibility nor the utility of perpetual peace. It thus repudiates the doctrine of Pacifism - born of a renunciation of the struggle and an act of cowardice in the face of sacrifice. War alone brings up to its highest tension all human energy and puts the stamp of nobility upon the peoples who have courage to meet it." -Mussolini

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Degree in Knowledge, Truth, and Reality That there should be degrees in our experience is necessitated for the same reason. We are finite and conditioned by the character of the organisms in which we ourselves, in our aspects as phenomena of nature and so far in space and time, are expressed. In order to accomplish anything we finite beings have to limit our endeavours and our purposes. We are what we are, and we cannot take in at any one moment all the possible aspects of what we visualize. But, none the less thought is powerful enough to so extend its range as to be able to recognize conceptually in these aspects, not mutually exclusive entities, but legitimate if limited phases of the larger ideal whole towards which it strives. Such a whole abstraction does, for the accomplishment of temporary ends, break up into aspects which it isolates from each other so as to bring about distinctness in conception and pictorial presentation. These aspects no doubt owe much of their mutual exclusiveness to the imagery that is inseparable from sense perception, yet in the end the characters they assume result from the conceptions or categories to which we temporarily abandon reflection, thereby diverting it from all else that is irrelevant to the purposes of our particular attempt at interpretation. Each aspect thus represents a stage in reflection, a degree in experience. Its character is what it derives from the category or general conception by which it is confined and distinguished, and we form our working images accordingly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Harrison takes what we think we know about science and religion, dismantles it, and puts it back together again in a provocative new way. It is a mistake to assume, as most do, that the activities and achievements that are usually labeled religious and scientific have been more or less enduring features of the cultural landscape of the West. Harrison, by setting out the history of science and religion to see when and where they come into being and to trace their mutations over timereveals how distinctively Western and modern they are. Only in the past few hundred years have religious beliefs and practices been bounded by a common notion and set apart from the secular. And the idea of the natural sciences as discrete activities conducted in isolation from religious and moral concerns is even more recent, dating from the nineteenth century. Putting the so-called opposition between religion and science into historical perspective, as Harrison does here for the first time, has profound implications for our understanding of the present and future relations between them. Excerpt: ... and discussion too long, cumbrous, and unpopular, and a diction much more poetical and figurative than is consistent with the simple nature of truth. But at the same time I could wish it to be kept in remembrance that every one has his own peculiarities and mode of instruction, which a wise man ought to tolerate; and that perhaps Plato had weighty reasons, of which we are now ignorant, why he should always prefer unusual words, circumlocutions, and obscurity, to simplicity and brevity of language. XVIII. I shall not now touch upon the testimonies by which Huetius hoped to prove that Plato seemed to deny the eternity of matter; for they are taken, as I have already said, from Hierocles and similar sources, whose reasonings I have determined to consider separately. I proceed now, therefore, to the arguments by which Dacier thougnt that Plato could be rescued from his position among the advocates of the eternity of matter. First of all he reasons thus:6 " A philosopher who in so many passages asserts the unity of God, cannot have fallen into so gross an error. If matter were eternal it would then be God, and there would then be two Gods, contrary to what he has laid down." The sum of this argument is, that he who believes in one God only, cannot at the same time maintain that matter is eternal. So indeed we may admit it to be if an individual be consistent with himself, and makes his teaching agree with his doctrine respecting the divine unity. But who does not know that many philosophers have entertained several mutually repugnant opinions, and have not perceived all the consequences of their own doctrines ? This was the case with Plato, who, though he speaks so often of the unity of God, did not perceive or reflect that the unity of God...

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1887 edition. Excerpt: ... LECTURE III. THE CONSCIENCE. IN the previous lecture, the conscience was named only as one of the parts of the soul which go to make the nature of man. It must now be investigated and exhibited more in detail. It is the conscience which gives to our nature one of its distinguishing marks. We define man as a moral being. It is this quality which makes him to be the being that he is. We ought, therefore, to have a very clear perception of its nature and of its functions. The moral nature of man is exhibited in the exercise of the conscience. If there was no conscience, there would be no moral nature. Man without the capacity to exercise this function might be a rational being, and all his actions then would be under the regulation of the reason as the highest and most important quality in his nature. But the capacity to exercise a conscience, and to have a "conscience void of offence toward God and toward man," implies that there is something higher in his nature than reason merely. There is a quality which elevates him above the character of a mere intellectual being, and which brings him into union with the divine. This character is designated the moral, and conformity of actions to that nature gives us a system of morality. The word had come fully into use when the New Testament was written, though it is somewhat remarkable that only St. Paul and St. Peter use it. St. John does not, unless we allow the genuineness of the first verses of the eighth chapter of his Gospel. But in the Old Testament it is heart, as the seat of the affections, which is considered the moral faculty. It is this word which St. John uses when he says, "If our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God" (i John iii. 21). But St. Paul makes constant...

We do, however, repair the vast majority of imperfections successfully; any imperfections that remain are intentionally left to preserve the state of such historical works.
