It is one in which the method of treatment must vary considerably with the preliminary attainments of the student, the time available for the course, and its proposed scope. It follows that a lecturer meets with some difficulty in recommending a text-book to fit the special scheme of instruction he has to adopt. The present book is the first of a short series of Notes intended primarily to assist a student in writing up his lectures; they are of the nature of a full explanatory syllabus of the course of lectures given to Third Year students in the Engineering Laboratory, and are in no wise designed to form a text-book on the subject. In consequence the treatment is necessarily condensed; and further, the limitation of the time available for the course has led to a certain amount of selection in the subjects dealt with; what such omissions should be must always be a matter of opinion. No examples are appended, as these are provided for separately, or can best be composed by the lecturer. The author is indebted to Mr E. B. Moullin, M. A., of Downing College, for revising the proofs; his hearty thanks are also due to Mr J. B. Peace, M. A., of Emmanuel College, the University Printer, who most kindly read the original manuscript and suggested numerous improvements in the treatment and presentation of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Theory of Alternating Currents, Vol. 1 The great progress that has been made in the application of alternating currents to industrial purposes makes it desirable to collect together and examine the mathematical theorems which electricians use in their everyday work. In this volume the more general theorems are collected, and proofs are given of the more important of them, due stress being laid on the assumptions that it is sometimes necessary to make, and on the consequent limitations in the use of the formulae. In the second volume the theory of alternators, motors, transformers, converters, and of the transmission of power by polyphase currents will be given. The reader is supposed to be familiar with the elementary theory of electricity and magnetism, and to have a working knowledge of trigonometry and of the elements of the calculus. A knowledge of De Moivre's theorem, De Moivre's property of the circle and of hyperbolic sines and cosines will be found essential. Lord Kelvin's bei and ber functions given in Chapter XVI will be understood at once from their definitions. The references, given at the end of nearly every chapter, are to the books or papers I have consulted when writing the chapter. In many cases they contain more detailed discussions of the same or similar problems, and will be helpful to the student. The proofs of several of the problems could have been considerably shortened by deducing them from the general equations of electromagnetism, but, in my opinion, the proofs given bring out the physical meaning more clearly to the electrical student. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Superconductivity, which has been held annu ally since 1988, is a forum for presenting the most up-to-date information about a broad range of research and development in superconductivity, from funda mental aspects to applications. More than 10 years have passed since the discovery of oxide superconductors and since various developments of applications began. It may be said that the prospects for application of oxide superconductors recently have opened up. Great progress has been made toward practical use, for example, of the flywheel, which uses bulk materials, and the high-performance cryo-cooled magnet made of bismuth wire. These were the results of persistent efforts to develop materials from the viewpoint of materials science and engineering. Also important is the progress in comprehensive understanding of high temperature superconductivity. Unique electronic properties of cuprates such as the non-Fermi liquid normal state, spin-charge separation, spin gap, and d-wave symmetry were discussed at the symposium, as were the unique electromagnetic properties resulting from the low dimensionality of cuprates. In the field of new superconductors, many exotic materials have been discovered since 1986. A decade of work with cuprate superconductors is reviewed in this proceedings, and several of the newest materials are presented. These papers will be instructive for many researchers and for students who are to enter this field.
