The purpose of this study was to examine anxiety, attributions, and marital quality in a sample of females. The first two hypotheses aimed to assess the relationship between anxiety and marital quality, and the relationship between attributions and marital quality. The primary research question aimed to assess attributions as a mediator in the relationship between anxiety and marital quality. Participants (N = 358) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Quality Marriage Index (QMI; Norton, 1983), the Marital Adjustment Test (MAT; Locke & Wallace, 1959), the Relationship Attribution Measure (RAM; Fincham & Bradbury, 1992), the Marital Attitude Survey (MAS; Pretzer, Epstein, & Fleming, 1991), the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI; Spielberger, 1983), the Big Five Inventory – Neuroticism subscale (BFI-N; John & Srivastava, 1999), the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS; Cohen, 1994), and the Center for Epidemiologic Studies – Depression (CES-D; Radloff, 1977). The researcher used hierarchical regression analysis to assess the first two hypotheses and structural equation modeling to assess the third research question. Hierarchical regression analyses showed that anxiety and marital quality correlated inversely after controlling for depression, such that higher levels of anxiety correlated with lower levels of marital quality. Additionally, these analyses showed that attributions and marital quality correlated positively after controlling for depression, such that higher levels of positive attributions correlated with higher levels of marital quality. Structural equation modeling analysis provided evidence that attributions mediated the relationship between anxiety and marital quality, such that greater anxiety predicted more negative attributions which then predicted lower marital quality. Limitations, implications, and future considerations were all addressed.

The ADIS-IV-L also contains a Diagnostic Timeline to assist in the determination of the onset, remission, and temporal sequence of disorders. Dyadic coping conceptualizes the way couples cope with stress together in sharing appraisals of demands, planning together how to deal with the stressors and engage in supportive or joint dyadic coping. Among the different theories of dyadic coping, the Systemic Transactional Model (STM; Bodenmann, 1995, 1997, 2005) has been applied to many studies on couples’ coping with stress. While a recent meta-analysis shows that dyadiccoping is a robust and consistent predictor of relationship satisfaction and couple’s functioning in community samples, some studies also reveal the significance of dyadic coping in dealing with psychological disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety) or severe illness (e.g., cancer, diabetes, COPD, etc.). Researchers all over the world build their research on this or other concepts of dyadic coping and many typically use the Dyadic Coping Inventory (DCI) for assessing dyadic coping. So far, research on dyadic coping has been systematically presented in two books, one written by Revenson, Kayser, & Bodenmann in 2005, focussing on emerging perspectives on couples’ coping, the other by Falconier, Randall, & Bodenmann more recently in 2016, addressing intercultural aspects of dyadic coping in African, American, Asian and European couples. The rural Midwest experienced its worst economic decline since the Depression years. Thousands of farmers lost their operations, and the small rural communities that serve agriculture often changed from prosperous business centers to struggling villages with many empty buildings and boarded-up storefronts along their main streets. Families in Troubled Times examines the plight of several hundred rural families who have lived through these difficult years. The participants in the Iowa Youth and Families Project, the subjects of the present study, include farmers, people from small towns, and those who lost farms and other businesses as a result of the "farm crisis." The book traces the influence of economic hardship on the emotions, behavior, and relationships of parents, children, siblings, husbands, and wives. The results of the study show that although economic stress has a powerful adverse effect on individuals and families, countervailing social influence can help to blunt these negative processes and to assist in the repair of the personal and interpersonal damage they produce.
