Book excerpt: Few researchers have examined the contributing factors to racial identity development for White Americans. In order to better understand White racial identity development, the current study was designed to use Helms's (1990) theory of White racial identity development to examine the associations between racial attitudes and status profiles of White racial identity, with particular interest in color-blind racial attitudes (i.e., the belief that race is a non-issue in modern society) and belief in a just world (i.e., the view that the world is fair and just). To gain further insight into profiles of White racial identity, additional social attitudes were included in the analyses, including social dominance orientation and internal and external motivation to avoid prejudice, as well as demographic variables. A sample of 350 White American adults recruited from Amazon's MTurk completed measures of racial identity, racial attitudes, social desirability, and demographic information. K means cluster analyses were conducted to create five status profiles of White identity. Among all study variables, cluster group membership was primarily defined by color-blind racial attitudes, social dominance orientation, and age. Results revealed color-blind racial attitudes were the strongest variables across all five clusters, even those in which the primary racial identity status was autonomy. Belief in a just world, on the other hand, did not appear to be a prominent factor in determining cluster membership in the current study. These results pointed to implications for both research and theory on White racial identity statuses, given that participants who were autonomous were also high in color-blind racial attitudes, which is inconsistent with current conceptualizations of the autonomy ego status. The results indicated the possibility of an ego status prior to autonomy and hold implications for identifying additional statuses of White racial identity within Helms's (1990) model. The study results hold further implications for future research in the exploration of connections between White racial identity and multicultural counseling competence.

Book excerpt: The negative psychological consequences of racial prejudice and discrimination in the lives of African Americans have been well documented. Recently, researchers have investigated how racial identity status attitudes may influence the perception of discrimination (i.e., it has been suggested that racial identity may act as a buffer against experiencing negative affect as a consequence of exposure to racial discrimination). While this hypothesis has received increased attention in the literature of late, current studies testing said hypothesis have not examined this association by using the recent advances in the conceptualization of subtle discrimination (i.e., microaggressions). As such, the purpose of this study was to examine whether racial identity status attitudes moderate the relationship between perceived discrimination (quantified using the Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale) and psychological functioning. A secondary hypothesis was that racial identity would mediate the relationship between racial socialization and psychological functioning. The study recruited 153 African American participants from undergraduate psychology courses at a medium sized Midwestern university. We found that racial identity attitudes moderated the association between the experience of microaggressions and endorsing symptoms of general psychological distress. Additionally, racial identity was found to partially mediate the association between racial socialization and psychological functioning.

Much of the current research on racial socialization focuses on how this process occurs for people of color. Little is known about the racial socialization processes of White Americans. The current study was designed to address this gap in the literature. The purpose of this study is to test racial socialization as a predictor of racial attitudes and White racial identity statuses among White Americans. It is hypothesized that racial socialization will significantly predict racial attitudes and White racial identity attitudes, respectively. More specifically, it is hypothesized that individuals who engage in more meaningful racial socialization with their parents will have lower levels of social dominance orientation (SDO) and lower levels of color-blind racial attitudes (CoBRA) than individuals who do not engage in racial socialization with their parents. It is also hypothesized that individuals who engage in more meaningful racial socialization with their parents will have achieved higher levels of White racial identity statuses than those who do not engage in racial socialization with their parents. To test the study hypotheses, the current study was conducted in two parts. In Study 1, a measure of perceived ethnic-racial socialization (Hughes & Johnson, 2001) was validated for use with a White sample. In Study 2, participants completed measures of (a) perceived ethnic-racial socialization for both parents and peers (Hughes & Johnson, 2001); (b) social dominance orientation (Ho et al., 2015); (c) color-blind racial attitudes (Neville, Lilly, Lee, Duran, and Browne, 2000); and (d) White racial identity statuses (Helms & Carter, 1990) in order to test the main study hypotheses. In Study 1, Confirmatory Factor Analysis was used to determine the fit of the perceived racial-ethnic socialization measure to the sample and appropriateness of the addition of four items to the measure. The measure was found to be both valid and reliable with the current sample. In Study 2, hierarchical regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive relationships of parent and peer socialization with racial attitudes and White racial identity statuses. Results from the regression analyses indicated that parent socialization experiences significantly predicted color-blind racial attitudes, as well as the disintegration and reintegration statuses of White racial identity, in a positive direction. Peer socialization, on the other hand, significantly predicted color-blind racial attitudes, as well as the disintegration and reintegration statuses of White racial identity, in a negative direction. These findings suggest that parent and peer socialization experiences are important in the formation of certain racial attitudes and in the achievement of certain White racial identity statuses, but that other factors may be impacting the development of racial attitudes and racial identity for White American adults. Although the main study hypotheses were not fully supported in the current study, the findings of the study are useful in providing insight into the racial socialization experiences of White Americans and hold implications both for future research of White racial socialization and for the counseling process.

Book excerpt: TRIOS is a model for the dual processes of self-protective and self-enhancing motivations for Blacks that live in a universal context of racism (Jones, 2003). Data have shown that Whites who are high in TRIOS tend to endorse prosocial values. The idea that TRIOS may be a non-reactive measure of racial attitudes in Whites stems from this research. The following studies examine this idea by exploring possible relationships between TRIOS and various explicit (Brigham, 1993) and implicit (e.g., Implicit Association Test; Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998) measures of racial attitudes. Experiment 1 found that Whites who had higher TRIOS levels held more positive explicit but not implicit racial attitudes. The second study, which included Whites and Blacks, found no significant relationship between racial attitudes and TRIOS for Blacks or Whites. However, a significant mean difference occurred suggesting that Whites high in TRIOS showed more positive implicit racial attitudes toward Blacks while Blacks high in TRIOS held less positive implicit racial attitudes towards Whites. In the third study similar but non-significant patterns were found with highly TRIOSic Whites showing more positive racial attitudes and highly TRIOSic Blacks showing less positive racial attitudes. Only minor consistencies were found between the studies. Overall implicit and explicit racial attitude means were generally as predicted though infrequently statically significant. Implications and methodical concerns are discussed.

Results indicated that White students who scored highest in the Reintegration status had less favorable attitudes toward counseling. In addition, White students scoring highest in the Immersion status had more favorable attitudes toward counseling.

Book excerpt: This dissertation integrates the literatures of social identity, intragroup processes, and cultural psychology to explore how dynamic norms can shift attitudes tied to White racial identity. Four empirical studies on the interplay between White identity, racial attitudes, ingroup conversations about race, and dynamic norms explore potential mechanisms for motivating attitude change within a privileged racial group. Two studies gathered baseline data on norm perceptions and tested the effectiveness of different dynamic norm appeal framings on feelings towards discussing race. Another two experimental conversation studies investigated the effects of brief conversations about race with another White person on behavioral intentions to engage in future conversations about race. There was no effect of a single unscaffolded conversation about race on attitudes toward White privilege. There was a marginal effect for dynamic norm appeals that contextualized the benefits of discussing race on increasing interest in future conversations about race. A dynamic norm appeal and subsequent conversation with a White partner did not significantly influence racial attitudes or perceived normativity of discussing race. Conditional process analysis models revealed a potential mechanism for increasing interest in discussing race by focusing on positive ingroup feelings rather than avoiding potential anxiety and negative feelings. A novel psychological mechanism for studying and intervening on White intragroup processes that examines approach vs. avoidance motivations is discussed.
