Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of mathematics teachers beliefs regarding the nature of mathematics and their classroom learning environment in Roberts County (fictional). The study investigated 165 kindergarten through twelfth grade mathematics teachers that taught at least one segment of mathematics a day. The researcher administered three surveys: the Teacher Beliefs Survey (developed by Beswick, 2005), the Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (developed by Taylor, Fraser, and Fisher, 1997) and a demographics survey to mathematics teachers at 35 schools. Data analysis included calculating the sub-scale means of each survey, a Pearson correlation, and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Data analysis found that Roberts County mathematics teachers held beliefs consistent with a problem-solving (or student-centered) view of mathematics however they were undecided (did not agree or disagree) with the instrumentalists view of mathematics. Teachers favored a classroom environment that allowed students to communicate about mathematics and to express their concerns about their own learning. Teachers beliefs about the nature of mathematics and their classroom learning environment were found to be statistically, positively significant with regard to the problem-solving view of mathematics (TBS sub-scale) and the CLES subscales. Elementary, middle, and high school teachers beliefs differed. Elementary teachers were more likely to have problem-solving oriented beliefs and had classrooms which supported a constructivist learning environment. Elementary teachers supported mathematics by making connections to mathematics outside of school, encouraging students to communicate about mathematics, providing a safe learning environment that allowed students to express concerns about their learning and to share control of their learning. Recommendations to further Roberts Countys mathematics teachers towards a more problem-solving and constructivist classroom learning environments are guided by the ideals of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics publications and the Georgia Performance Standards for mathematics.

The research questions were investigated using a belief questionnaire and admini stered to 80 elementary mathematics teachers. Findings suggest that Lebanese tea chers hold stronger beliefs more consistent with the fallibilist view with respe ct to the nature of mathematics, doing mathematics, learning environment and cri tical thinking than the absolutist view. Correlation results showed that Lebanes e teachers' beliefs about the nature of math are correlated with their beliefs a bout doing mathematics as well as about the learning environment. Stepwise multi ple regressions showed that both Fallibilist and Absolutist items concerning the learning environment are significant predictors of participant's decision about high level thinking task and Absolutist items concerning the learning environme nt predict participant's decision about important mathematical task. Results of the study will contribute to the literature on teacher beliefs in gen eral and to the growing body of literature on Lebanese elementary mathematics ed ucation in particular. Informal interviews and discussions with these teachers also occurred throughout, and subsequent to, the observation period. Significant associations were found between the teachers' beliefs and the extent to which their classroom environments could be described as constructivist. Specifically, teachers with a problem-solving view of mathematics and student-focussed views of mathematics teaching and learning were more likely than other teachers to have classroom environments that were consistent with constructivist principles. Various associations with the teachers ́̀̆personal data were also identified. The case studies revealed a number of particular beliefs that were associated with the creation of classroom environments that could be characterized as constructivist. These beliefs related to the teachers ́̀̆views concerning the nature of mathematics, mathematics learning, the teachers ́̀̆role and responsibilities in relation to both students ́̀̆learning and their own professional learning, and most significantly, the ability and inclination of their students ́̀̆to learn mathematics. Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between beliefs found using the Integrated Mathematics and Pedagogy (IMAP) project beliefs survey and the beliefs found in math stories of eight novice (less than two years teaching) elementary school teachers. The stories were coded for the same beliefs used in the IMAP survey. As in the IMAP survey, the strength of evidence of the belief was assigned numerical values, zero through three, indicating virtually no evidence to very strong evidence respectively. Results showed that specific beliefs could be found in math stories, yet not always at the same level of strength as the IMAP survey. This indicates that each conveys differing views on the teachers' beliefs, and thus provides more detailed pictures of the teachers' beliefs. The details include a sense of the trajectory of development of teachers' beliefs from student to teacher that the IMAP survey does not. The math stories also provide evidence of the role of emotion in the formation and entrenchment of beliefs.
