Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand the reasons students currently participating in collegiate instrumental ensembles chose to initially join instrumental music ensembles, what they enjoyed about the experience, and why they persisted. An ex post facto design was employed to determine the effects of recruitment and retention practices within middle school, high school, and collegiate instrumental ensembles. I surveyed students currently participating in college band ensembles who had participated in middle and high school band as part of their past school musical training. A survey was developed and distributed to four instrumental music ensembles: Buckeye Philharmonic, Symphonic Band, University Band, and Marching Band. The survey focused on the reasons for initial participation, participation in middle school, high school, and college, as well as why these participants considered dropping out of their respective ensembles. Data suggests that participation or non-participation in musical ensembles were influenced by factors such as (a) music major/non-music major participation, (b) current ensemble, (c) family support, (d) social reasons and (e) competence beliefs. Findings imply that competence beliefs are fragile in the early stages, but participants, particularly music majors, may center parts of their identity around music. Music majors valued musical and social factors more than non-music majors. In addition, there were significant differences in reasons for participation based on ensemble, particularly the Buckeye Philharmonic and Marching Band.

The Coronavirus Pandemic made it harder for music educators to retain and recruit students into their upper secondary ensemble programs. The purpose of the proposed study is to determine that it is plausible that the residual effects of the Coronavirus Pandemic had an effect on the retention and recruitment of the band, choir, and orchestra programs of the George Bush High School Music Cohort. The study's first phase was to identify the enrollment numbers of the band, choir, and orchestra programs before the Coronavirus Pandemic during the 2019 – 2020 and 2020 – 2021 academic school years. The study's second phase was to determine the 2021 – 2022 and projected 2022 – 2023 academic school year enrollment numbers during the Coronavirus Pandemic in relation to the retention and recruiting of the band, choir, and orchestra programs. The third phase surveyed the George Bush High School Music Cohort directors with questions about why students did not return to their respective band, choir, and orchestra programs. The method in which this study will be conducted is the Qualitative Phenomenological case study. The performing arts programs of the George Bush High School Music Cohort have experienced enrollment, retention, and recruitment numbers as well as the music ensemble directors’ reported anxiety/stress resulting from the Coronavirus Pandemic.

On average, only 24 percent of high school students participate in an ensemble throughout their high school careers, and music educators are trying to address this through modern bands. This qualitative, postpositivist, existential-phenomenological study identifies how the implication of modern bands can increase and retain music enrollment in secondary schools and analyzes the effects on other traditional instrumental and vocal ensemble enrollments. This study examined secondary music directors’ perceptions of the impact of modern bands on traditional ensembles. To ascertain how modern bands can help increase enrollment and learn the effect on traditional ensembles, music educators with modern band programs from across the United States provided their perspectives through a qualitative survey. Additionally, music teachers were encouraged to discuss their views on how modern band affects traditional ensembles. The results of this study show that popular music may help increase enrollment in music programs without adversely impacting traditional ensembles. This research study will help music educators and district administrators understand the leverage modern band must increase music ensemble enrollment and its relationship with traditional ensembles. In addition, this research study could encourage more school districts to adopt popular music education to reach students that may have otherwise eluded the music program.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The incorporation of popular music into music education settings can provide music educators with a way to stay relevant with the changing times, to recruit students who would-otherwise be excluded by traditional school music ensembles, and to engage students in meaningful musical experiences. The presence of popular music in American school music programs; however, has traditionally been limited to a fringe element of the school music program, or not included at all. A large body of extant literature addresses the inclusion of popular music in school music. Studies examining popular music ensembles in college music programs; however, are sparse. In this qualitative study I examined popular music ensembles in two college music education settings in the Northeastern United States. The purpose of this study was to examine the perspectives and experiences of the participants with respect to the inclusion of popular music ensembles in colleges. I used a multiple case study design within qualitative methodology and utilized ethnographic techniques including formal interviews, informal conversations, classroom observations, audio and video recordings of student ensemble rehearsals, activities, and performances. Data analysis employed interpretive coding guided by a constant comparative approach. Data analysis revealed themes with regards to the challenges of implementing popular music ensembles in college settings and from the narratives of the participants. Challenges for the participants in this study included: lack of administrator support; insufficient rehearsal space; expectations of students and colleagues; issues of authenticity; gender inequality; and codifying informal learning practices in college settings. Themes that emerged from the participant narratives included: student benefits; previous experiences that shaped the instructors' approaches to popular music ensembles; and, a need for rethinking music education in American schools. Suggestions for the music education profession included: rethinking common approaches to music education; including a wide variety of musical genres in school music programs; integrating informal learning practices; learning from other countries that are successfully integrating popular music into music education settings; using jazz as a cautionary tale when examining how popular music should be included in music education practices; and embracing the social benefits of popular music integration in school music programs.

Book excerpt: "This action research aimed to examine the factors contributing to student retention in a middle school band program through the self-reported perspectives of students. With a critical inquiry framework, it was anticipated that the results would inform potential action by the researcher aimed at increasing student access to music programs. Through an empirical descriptive design using survey technique, the study population included band students at the school where the researcher was teaching at the time of the study. Results of data analysis indicate that students mostly made their decisions independently, while some were influenced by parents and peers. The most prominent influences on continuing in band were reported as follows: enjoyment of the music itself, qualities of their instrument, social interactions with peers, the teacher, sense of accomplishment, and positive emotional experiences in band. Challenges to continuing in band were indicated by a few students to include: missing other electives, the appearance (condition) and mechanics of certain instruments, learning new music, financial obligations of the instrument, and reports of negative interactions with peers. Many students reported being unable to practice outside of band however few mentioned this as a challenge to staying in band. It makes sense that students do not find this a major problem because this particular school allows for 50 minutes of band rehearsal five days a week. The results led to ideas for actions to be taken on improving retention"--Pages iii-iv.

The research within this project examined insights into college admissions practices, administration roles in student recruitment and retention, and the role of the music faculty in recruiting and retaining current students. Furthermore, this study evaluates the effects of college exposure, marketing, communication, and incentives on student decision-making. This document also evaluates and defines the importance of the professional relationships between the college program director and surrounding high school programs. In addition, this research assesses the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and how it changed how small college band programs recruit and retain students. Discoveries of this study include enrollment data from multiple small school band programs in central Texas. The data collected emphasizes retention rates as well. This research also weighs the effects of geographic location on student enrollment. This qualitative study has reviewed multiple marketing and social media avenues directly related to student enrollment. While this research suggests that certain recruitment practices have a higher success rate, specialized recruitment strategies based on geographical location, economic support, and equipment availability generate differing success rates per location. Thus, this research assessed the best practices for general recruitment, specialized recruitment, general retention, and specialized retention. Participants were four urban school band directors and two urban school administrators. The directors were purposely selected based upon having successful and well-known band programs in schools that exhibited characteristics common to urban schools, including (a) a large percentage of low-SES students, (b) low, mean standardized test scores for students, (c) limited parental involvement in the band program, and (d) constrained budgets to support the band program. A survey and interviews were used to collect data on the teachers, their programs, and their administrators. Interview questions were developed based upon a review of literature and research questions regarding strategies used to recruit and retain students within urban school band programs. Using a semi-structured format, directors were interviewed to learn about their background in music, education, and current teaching situation. Two administrators were also interviewed regarding their perceptions of the recruitment and retention of students in the band programs in their school. Each band director participant described similar approaches to recruitment and retention, utilizing techniques such as demonstration concerts, informational handouts, testing of students on instruments, and holding a recruitment night for parents. They also noted the importance of administrative and parental support.

The literature regarding motivation in school ensembles shows motivation comes from five main categories: parents and family, peers, directors, environment, and the students themselves. This study asks basic questions regarding motivation of students in a large community performing ensemble, and compares them to responses from the same students regarding their school ensemble experiences. The responses to the questionnaire suggest that motivating factors in community ensembles fall into the same basic categories, but have slightly different nuances based on the environment. Looking through the context of Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs, this study adds to a growing body of research regarding student motivation, emphasizing the importance of parents, peers, and the director in student motivation and retention in ensembles both in and out of the school setting.

The study was based on individual interviews and observation of the preparation for the conducting recitals of three graduate level conducting students. The areas examined in the study were the perception of student conductors as performers, the impact of previous experiences with music performance anxiety on perceived anxiety during recital, and the impact of trait and state factors during rehearsal and performance on perceived anxiety during the recital. The researcher found that the perception of meaningful personal connections was crucial in creating a positive performing experience. Cognitive arousal which may have caused catastrophic performance failure was utilized in ways that made it relevant to the music. The researcher concluded that graduate level conductors should make an effort to establish genuine and positive interpersonal relationships with their performing ensembles in order to prevent excessive levels of music performance anxiety during rehearsals and performance. This can be accomplished by engaging with the ensemble in a way that implicitly conveys trust and respect and also by explicitly sharing such goals with the ensemble"--P. iii-iv.

The plan outlines strategies such as frequent contact with new recruits and their parents, positive student-teacher relationships with current students, and providing culturally relevant performances that meet the community's expectations. All of the findings are applicable to strategically improving the quality and quantity of the band program in the Valley Park, Missouri school district.

With an understanding of the role of curriculum in the past, this study offers an outline of a curriculum approach to attract and retain impoverished minority students. The curriculum design followed the ADDIE method, including analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research found that the curriculum choices should be culturally relevant, repertoire selected by students, and have varying genres.

Book excerpt: Music educators at the secondary level are faced with many challenges when trying to recruit students for instrumental or choral programs. Recent studies have looked at recruitment challenges including socioeconomic issues, parental involvement, intellectual competency, music aptitude and extra-curricular activities. Most students' music career does not start when they enroll in beginning band or choral ensembles, as they may have been exposed to music classes as early as kindergarten. General music teachers have the task of introducing students to singing, playing a variety of instruments and creating compositions. With this early exposure to music and the methods used by the general music teacher, students can begin to create their own music preferences, which may influence their choice of ensembles at the secondary level. This thesis looks at whether the methods of the general music teacher and typical activities associated with these methods are related to the numbers of students who choose band, choir or orchestra as the secondary level.
