The current study examined three major types of categories that impact whether an Asian American youth seeks help for his or her problems, namely, illness profile, predisposing characteristics, and barriers/facilitators. The present study aimed to investigate how these various factors together predicted help-seeking attitudes (willingness to seek professional mental health help) and actual help-seeking behaviors (mental health treatment in the past year). Past research on Asian Americans has mainly examined help-seeking predictors in isolation, but has not assessed their unique relationship to help-seeking attitudes and behaviors, after accounting for the correlations among the predicting factors. Participants included a sample of 38 Asian American adolescents and a sample of 224 Asian American undergraduate students enrolled in introductory psychology courses.

This review examined 21 studies published in the last 10 years from the United States, Australia, and United Kingdom. This systematic review of the literature focused on factors that influenced Asian American youth to seek mental health services, barriers to mental health use, and interventions in the community. The findings suggested that Asian American youth were less likely to seek professional help for their mental health problems, despite services and opportunities available. In addition, shame and stigma were believed to be the prominent reason why there are lower utilization rates of mental health services. There are some interventions and programs designed to address the service gaps, however, it is a slow progress of service usage. With the growing awareness of mental health needs in this community, this review will help counselors, schools, and professionals better understand how to address this issue.

Book excerpt: Although most individuals in psychological distress do not seek and receive mental health services, underutilization of services continues to be the major mental health disparity affecting certain racial/ethnic minority populations, such as Asian Americans (Sue, Cheng, Saad, & Chu, 2012). Unfortunately, this problem has persisted over the past few decades, and there is limited theoretical understanding of why this occurs. The goal of the current study was to apply a social psychological theoretical framework--the Health Belief Model (Rosenstock, 1966)--to understand why people in distress do not seek help, and moreover, why this problem is especially pronounced among Asian Americans. This study examined how levels of functioning, perceived susceptibility to mental health problems, perceived benefits of treatment, and perceived barriers to treatment influenced intentions to seek help among a sample of 395 Asian American and 261 White American individuals experiencing elevated levels of psychological distress. Analyses using structural equation modeling indicated that perceived benefits partially explained why Asian Americans had lower intentions to seek help relative to White Americans. For Asian Americans, functioning was negatively related to help-seeking, but this effect was not present for White Americans. As this study is one of few studies to concurrently assess barriers and facilitators of help-seeking among those experiencing current psychological distress, clinical implications of these results are discussed.

Book excerpt: Objective: Asian Americans have the lowest mental health help-seeking rate of any racial-ethnic group. This study aimed to better understand the mental health needs, barriers, and experiences of the Asian American student community and explored the co-design of a digital platform. Methods: This study examined the mental health experiences of Asian American college/university students through a multi-phased approach. The study included a secondary analysis of a needs assessment survey and preliminary human-centered design interviews, which included both interview questions and a co-design process. Descriptive statistics are reported for survey data, which informed the development of the human-centered design interviews. Preliminary thematic analysis was conducted to assess the interview transcripts. Results: Seventy-five Asian American participants (n=75) between 18-27 years old (mean: 21.99; SD: 4.14) completed the survey. While only 13.33% (10/75) currently used professional services, both offered by their college/university and outside of it, the most commonly desired resource was mental health resources and services offered outside of their college/university (50.67%, 38/75) and by their college/university (49.33%, 37/75). Potential barriers included not knowing where to access professional services, perceptions of self and others if utilizing professional services, and lack of cultural or ethnic representation and tailoring. Four individuals who identify as Asian American (n=4) individually completed human-centered design interviews. These preliminary interviews begin to shed light on the importance of cultural considerations and the potential of a digital platform to curate relevant resources. Conclusion: This thesis suggests that students would like to utilize professional mental health services but often times they do not impart due to cultural influences. We recognized that ability to find culturally tailored resources is a barrier and there is a potential for a digital platform to curate culturally-appropriate resources for this community.

Castillo Department of Educational Psychology, Texas A&M University, USA ABSTRACT This study aimed to examine whether Asian international students’ mental health literacy predicts mental health help-seeking behaviors above and beyond known influencing factors. Hierarchical logistic regression was conducted in analyzing a national sample of 460 Asian international students who reported depressive symptomatology. Results indicated that students who identified as female and experienced more days of academic impairment were more likely to seek counseling. Additionally, having more knowledge on mental disorders and treatments and campus mental health services were positively related to helpseeking behavior. However, the ability to recognize the development of mental disorders in others was negatively associated with seeking mental health help. Book excerpt: Stigma is a major barrier to seeking help for mental health issues among members of the Asian community. The purpose of the current study was to analyze the effectiveness of a 12- minute video intervention, “Overcoming Adversity: Stories of Hope and Courage,” on reducing the self-stigma towards seeking help and increasing willingness to seek mental health treatment among those in the Asian community. The video, created by Asian Americans for Community Involvement, featured members of various Asian subgroups, age groups, and socio-economic status to promote self-identification and ethnic match. Seventy-nine community participants over the age of 18 who identified as Asian or Asian American living in the San Francisco Bay Area participated in the study by watching the video and completing pre- and post-video questionnaires. Results support the hypothesis that the video intervention is effective in decreasing participants’ self-stigma towards mental health treatment. As compared to their pre-intervention levels, participants were more likely to seek professional help for themselves as well as recommend someone close to them to seek mental health treatment. Qualitative feedback from participants established that the video was helpful with increasing understanding of mental illness and mental health professionals along with raising awareness of mental health problems. In addition, ethnic match was not found to be a predicting factor. Nevertheless, after controlling for age and acculturation, perceived similarity in self-identity was found to be a statistically significant predictor. Multiple regression analyses indicate that age and acculturation were not found to be predictors impacting change in self-stigma towards help-seeking. In sum, the current study contributes to the literature of effective interventions to counter the stigma of mental illness by establishing that video interventions can be a cost effective intervention to increase awareness about mental illness and likelihood of seeking help by the Asian American community.

Given the negative consequences of untreated mental health problems, ways to promote their mental health service use deserve attention. Using Andersen’s behavioral model as a conceptual framework, the study explored factors associated with willingness to seek professional mental health service across ethnic-subgroups of Asian Americans. The data were drawn from the 2002 National Latino and Asian American Study. Asian Americans aged 18 over (total n=2,095) were included in the analyses with Chinese (n=600), Vietnamese (n=520), Filipino (n=508), and other Asians (n=467). Logistic regression models were conducted with sets of predictors: (1) predisposing (age, gender, marital status, education, and nativity), (2) mental health needs (diagnosis of psychiatric disorders), (3) enabling variables (health insurance, English proficiency, perceived stigma, social network, and prior exposure of mental health services), and (4) an interaction term between mental health needs and enabling variables. Mental health needs reduced the odds of having willingness to seek service in the sample of Chinese Americans. Vietnamese Americans with no perceived stigma were more likely to be willing to seek professional service. A significant interaction between mental health needs and social network was found in the Vietnamese sample. The linkage between the presence of mental health needs and willingness to seek service in the Vietnamese sample was less likely when they had higher level of social network. Findings highlight similarities and differences between and within subgroups of Asian Americans in the predictors of willingness to seek professional service. The insignificant or negative relationship between mental health needs and willingness may suggest the lack of recognition of mental health problems in Asian Americans. Social network is generally considered as a facilitator for help-seeking behavior, but the combined effect of the presence of mental health needs and higher level of social network may potentially impede Vietnamese Americans from seeking professional service. The distinctive culture of Asian Americans being a collectivistic group needs to be incorporated when developing intervention programs

Implications and future research recommendations were discussed to provide mental health professionals with a further understanding of cultural barriers and help-seeking behaviors of Asian Americans, thereby, providing culturally sensitive, effective, and competent mental health services to Asian Americans.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The model minority stereotype and Asian cultural values stigmatize mental health difficulties and mental health treatment seeking. As such, Asian/Asian Americans (AAs) may not seek out treatments despite psychological distress. One population at-risk for experiencing negative outcomes due to delayed, or no, treatment is AA college students. To date, research has explored factors that influence formal help-seeking (e.g., therapy, counseling) for mental health needs among AA college students. However, little is known regarding the prevalence and correlates of informal help-seeking behaviors (e.g., peers, roommates, family member, significant other) among AA college students. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to examine informal help-seeking for mental health difficulties among the AA college student population. Secondary data from The Healthy Minds Study 2017-2018 was analyzed using both descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Results showed mental health symptoms were prevalent among AA college students. A greater presence of informal mental health help-seeking behavior was found compared to formal mental health help-seeking. Perceived self-stigma, perceived need, knowledge/awareness of outreach campus services, belief in efficacy for medication, belief in efficacy of therapy, peer/family use of services were significantly associated with Any Informal use. Findings provided a more complete understanding of service utilization and may help to facilitate prevention and intervention efforts among AA college students.

Book excerpt: Asian Americans are a rapidly growing population in the US and have high levels of psychological distress. However, Asian Americans tend not to ask for help from mental health professionals in regards to social/emotional issues, including school counselors. Asian American students are typical in terms of their presence within the US mainstream public school system, yet they are atypical in experiencing a variety of stressors and issues such as academic pressures, language and communication difficulties with parents/guardians, acculturative stress, and many more (Chang & Smith, 2015; Mouw & Xie, 1999; Berry, 2005). Despite mental health needs and the growing relevance of this population, research on the Asian American population is limited (Cho & Haslam, 2010). Thus, the purpose of this research study was to gain an understanding of participants’ experiences with Asian American students through the lens of the help-seeking model (Cauce et al., 2002). Two high schools and one middle school in a suburban area within the Southeast region of the US were purposefully selected for this study, and from these schools, eight high school counselors and two middle school counselors were interviewed. Participants were specifically asked about interactions, observations, and accommodations pertaining to the help-seeking needs of Asian American students. Data was collected through semi-structured individual interviews, which were then transcribed and analyzed for themes and conclusions. Four main themes (acculturative stress, school based expectations, lack of mental health counseling, and counselor involvement) with 10 subthemes were extrapolated from the data and confirmed the current literature on the help-seeking needs and processes of Asian American students. The study brought new insights to this topic and provided implications for future practice and research.
