This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a large variety of turbulence models available. These models include direct numerical simulation, large eddy simulation, Reynolds stress/flux model, zero equation model, one equation model, two equation k-epsilon model, multiple-scale model, etc. Each turbulence model contains different physical assumptions and requirements. The natures of turbulence are randomness, irregularity, diffusivity and dissipation. The capabilities of the turbulence models, including physical strength, weakness, limitations, as well as numerical and computational considerations, are reviewed. Recommendations are made for the potential application of a turbulence model in thrust chamber and performance prediction programs. The full Reynolds stress model is recommended. In a workshop, specifically called for the assessment of turbulence models for applications in liquid rocket thrust chambers, most of the experts present were also in favor of the recommendation of the Reynolds stress model. Book excerpt: Following the consensus of a workshop in Turbulence Modelling for Liquid Rocket Thrust Chambers, the current effort was undertaken to study the effects of second-order closure on the predictions of thermochemical flow fields. To reduce the instability and computational intensity of the full second-order Reynolds Stress Model, an Algebraic Stress Model (ASM) coupled with a two-layer near wall treatment was developed. Various test problems, including the compressible boundary layer with adiabatic and cooled walls, recirculating flows, swirling flows, and the entire SSME nozzle flow were studied to assess the performance of the current model. Detailed calculations for the SSME exit wall flow around the nozzle manifold were executed. As to the overall flow predictions, the ASM removes another assumption for appropriate comparison with experimental data to account for the non-isotropic turbulence effects. Chen, C. P. and Kim, Y. Book excerpt: After a brief review of the more popular turbulence models, the author presents and discusses accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving the boundary-layer equations with turbulence models based on algebraic formulas (mixing length, eddy viscosity) or partial-differential transport equations. A computer program employing the Cebeci-Smith model and the k-e model for obtaining the solution of two-dimensional incompressible turbulent flows without separation is discussed in detail and is presented in the accompanying CD.

Book excerpt: Advanced Approaches in Turbulence: Theory, Modeling, Simulation and Data Analysis for Turbulent Flows focuses on the updated theory, simulation and data analysis of turbulence dealing mainly with turbulence modeling instead of the physics of turbulence. Beginning with the basics of turbulence, the book discusses closure modeling, direct simulation, large eddy simulation and hybrid simulation. The book also covers the entire spectrum of turbulence models for both single-phase and multi-phase flows, as well as turbulence in compressible flow. Turbulence modeling is very extensive and continuously updated with new achievements and improvements of the models. Modern advances in computer speed offer the potential for elaborate numerical analysis of turbulent fluid flow while advances in instrumentation are creating large amounts of data. This book covers these topics in great detail. Covers the fundamentals of turbulence updated with recent developments Focuses on hybrid methods such as DES and wall-modeled LES Gives an updated treatment of numerical simulation and data analysis

This book was released on 1979 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Systematic evaluation of several turbulence models for use in aircraft and rocket plume flowfield predictions is presented. Eddy viscosity and two equation (TKE) models presently utilized for plume calculations have been incorporated into a mixing/afterburning code (BOAT) and tested against a wide range of laboratory data. These data include incompressible and compressible free shear layers and jets, H2/air subsonic and subsonic reacting flows and a liquid propellant rocket plume. The significant differences between rocket/aircraft plume flowfields and the laboratory test conditions used to determine the turbulence model 'constants' are discussed. The two-equation (K 2) model, with a suitable correction for compressibility, adequately predicts all the nonreacting shear layer and jet cases and the subsonic H2/air reacting jet case, but does not fare as well in the supersonic H2/air reacting jet and liquid propellant plume cases. Suggestions are given for K 2 model improvements to account for the noted inadequacies in compressible, reacting flows, and a recommended method for implementing these model improvements is provided. Book excerpt: With applications to climate, technology, and industry, the modeling and numerical simulation of turbulent flows are rich with history and modern relevance. The complexity of the problems that arise in the study of turbulence requires tools from various scientific disciplines, including mathematics, physics, engineering and computer science. Authored by two experts in the area with a long history of collaboration, this monograph provides a current, detailed look at several turbulence models from both the theoretical and numerical perspectives. The k-epsilon, large-eddy simulation and other models are rigorously derived and their performance is analyzed using benchmark simulations for real-world turbulent flows. Mathematical and Numerical Foundations of Turbulence Models and Applications is an ideal reference for students in applied mathematics and engineering, as well as researchers in mathematical and numerical fluid dynamics. It is also a valuable resource for advanced graduate students in fluid dynamics, engineers, physical oceanographers, meteorologists and climatologists.
