We measure? = (68 ± 14 ± 4 ± 3){sup o} (modulo 180{sup o}), where the first error is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third reflects the uncertainty in the description of the neutral D decay amplitudes. This result is inconsistent with? = 0 (no direct CP violation) with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations.

Charge conjugation, C, and parity, P, are symmetries of particle interactions. C corresponds to the operation of replacing a particle by its antiparticle, while P is the operation of mirror reflection. Before 1956, it was believed that these were also symmetries of the interactions of elementary particles. In 1956, C S Wu found evidence for P violation in the weak interaction. Theorists proposed that the combination of CP would be a symmetry of the weak interaction. In 1964, Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay found the first evidence for the violation of CP symmetry in the decays of kaons. Although Kobayashi and Maskawa then showed how the Standard Model can accommodate the observed CP violation, Wolfenstein has pointed out that it is also possible that there is a new interaction in addition to the usual four, called the superweak interaction,which is responsible for the asymmetry. To test this idea, the observation of a different type of asymmetry, called direct CP violation, is required; in the kaon sector, very precise measurements of the ratio of kaon decay rates are necessary. In B decay modes where a second order weak process whimsically named "penguin" interferes with another suppressed, first order "tree" amplitude, it may also be possible to observe these direct CP-violating effects. B physics and CP violation is now one of the major growth areas in high energy physics. Book excerpt: Using the entire sample of 467 million [Upsilon](4S) 2!B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at SLAC, we perform a 'GLW' analysis of B{sup ±} 2!D{sup ±} decays, using decay modes in which the neutral D meson decays to either CP-eigenstates or non-CP-eigenstates. We measure the partial decay rate charge asymmetries for CP-even and CP-odd D final states to be A{sub CP+} = 0.25 ± 0.06 ± 0.02 and A{sub CP-} = -0.09 ± 0.07 ± 0.02, respectively, where the first error is the statistical and the second is the systematic uncertainty. The parameter A{sub CP+} is different from zero with a significance of 3.6 standard deviations, constituting evidence for direct CP violation. We also measure the ratios of the charged-averaged B partial decay rates in CP and non-CP decays, R{sub CP+} = 1.18 ± 0.09 ± 0.05 and R{sub CP-} = 1.07 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.04. We infer frequentist confidence intervals for the angle [gamma] of the (db) unitarity triangle, for the strong phase difference [delta]{sub B}, and for the amplitude ratio r{sub B}, which are related to the B− 2!D− decay amplitude by r{sub B}e{sup i({delta}{sub b-[gamma]})} = A(B− 2!{bar D}°K−)/A(B− 2!D°K°−). Including statistical and systematic uncertainties, they obtain 0.24

Overconstraining the triangle will test the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa model of quark mixing. The CDF collaboration, due to begin a second run in March 2001 with major upgrades to both the accelerator and the detector, will study the angle[beta] using B[sup 0] decays, the angle[gamma] using B[sup 0] and B[sub s][sup 0] decays, and a side of the triangle through the observation of B[sub s][sup 0]--[bar B][sub s][sup 0] mixing. Projected sensitivities are driven mostly by previous measurements using data from the first run. One highlight of the Run I B physics program is a measurement of the CP violating parameter sin 2[beta]= 0.79[sub[minus]0.44][sup+0.41], based on a tagged sample of 400 B[sup 0] decays in the mode B[sub 0]/[bar B][sup 0][r-arrow] J/[psi]K[sub s][sup 0]. The technology of flavor tagging, used here as well as in numerous B[sup 0]-[bar B][sup 0] mixing analyses in run I, is crucial and will be augmented in Run II with better particle identification capabilities. Exclusive all-hadronic final states will enter the data sample in Run II through a new displaced track trigger.

Book excerpt: This thesis reports measurements of the time-dependent CP asymmetries in fully reconstructed B° → (D{sup (*){-+}} and B° → D{sup {-+}} [rho]{sup {+-}}) decays in approximately 232 million [Upsilon](4S) → B{bar B} events, collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B factory at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in California, as published in Ref. [14]. The phenomenon of CP violation allows one to distinguish between matter and antimatter, and, as such, is one of the essential ingredients needed to explain the apparent abundance of matter over antimatter in the universe. The Standard Model describes the observed elementary particles in terms of three generations of quarks and leptons, as well as the weak, electromagnetic, and strong interactions between them. In the Standard Model, CP violation is incorporated in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, which describes the weak interactions between the quarks. The weak interactions between quarks are described by coupling constants that are functions of three real parameters and one irreducible complex phase. The magnitude of all CP violating effects in the Standard Model is related to this complex phase. The measurement of the CP violating phase of the CKM matrix is an important part of the present scientific program in particle physics. Violation of the CP symmetry manifests itself as a non-zero area of the Unitarity Triangle. The Unitarity Triangle needs to be overconstrained by experimental measurements in order to demonstrate that the CKM mechanism is the correct explanation of this phenomenon. No stringent measurement of the CKM-angle [gamma] is yet available.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.
