Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I remember everything about the day I bought my first car. The pride, the awe at the financial responsibility, the way I stroked the paintwork...I loved that car with an intensity that still persists, years later. And even after all the fancy cars I've driven since then, if you gave me half a chance -- if they still made that car -- I'd buy it again." Lesley Hazleton remembers that day so clearly because while men take for granted the independence that cars bring, women do not. For women, a car means freedom. It means control over their own lives. It means, really, far more to women than it does for most men. Yet for years, automakers didn't consider women when they designed cars. As far as they were concerned, women were in the bleachers and men were in the grandstands. Not anymore. Lesley Hazleton talked to 150 women all over America to find out what they really thought about cars. What she discovered will make you laugh and it will make you think. This book is as much about the romance of owning a car (and romance inside a car) as it is about antilock brakes and air bags. More than a car manual (though it's filled with how-to advice on taking care of your car), it will enable you to negotiate for the best deal, teach you how to test-drive, help you decide whether to buy or lease, explain safety features and security issues, and guide you to know your car as much as you love it. With lively anecdotes, charts, and illustrations, Everything Women Always Wanted to Know About Cars, But Didn't Know Who to Ask is revealing, insightful, and extremely informative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the Ford Model T became a vehicle for the masses, the automobile has served as a symbol of masculinity. The freedom of the open road, the muscle car's horsepower, the technical know-how for tinkering: all of these experiences have largely been understood from the perspective of the male driver. Women, in contrast, were relegated to the passenger seat and have been the target of stereotypes that portray them as uninterested in automobiles and, more perniciously, as poor drivers. In Women at the Wheel, Katherine J. Parkin illuminates the social implications of these stereotypes and shows how they have little basis in historical reality. With chapters on early driver's education and licensing programs, and on buying, driving, and caring for cars, she describes a rich cast of characters, from Mary Landon, the first woman ever to drive in 1899, to Dorothy Levitt, author of the first automotive handbook for women in 1909, to Margie Seals, who opened her garage, "My Favorite Mechanic . . . Is a Woman," in 1992. Although women drove and had responsibility for their family's car maintenance, twentieth-century popular culture was replete with humorous comments and judgmental critiques that effectively denied women pride in their driving abilities and car-related expertise. Parkin contends that, despite women's long history with cars, these stereotypes persist.

Book excerpt: Since their introduction in 1964, American muscle cars have been closely associated with masculinity. In the 21st century, women have been a growing presence in the muscle car world, exhibiting classic cars at automotive events and rumbling to work in modern Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers. Informed by the experiences of 88 female auto enthusiasts, this book highlights women's admiration and passion for American muscle, and reveals how restoring, showing and driving classic and modern cars provides a means to challenge longstanding perceptions of women drivers and advance ideas of identity and gender equality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don "The Snake" Prudhomme reveals for the first time ever his incredible life and career on and off of the drag strip.

Imagine spending a year with Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, having coffee together and talking about his life, his racing, his friends, and his family. He’d tell you about how he rose from being a high school drop-out who was painting cars to a respected Top Fuel dragster driver and successful businessman. You’d hear how he toured the country with Tommy Ivo and "The Hawaiian" Roland Leong, racing all the legends from "Big Daddy" Don Garlits to "The Golden Greek" [Chris] Karamesines. He'd say how he met Tom McEwen and recall how they became the Snake and the Mongoose, leading to a career in Funny Cars that netted him four championships in a row. He'd talk about the thrill of first wins and owning his own teams but also the struggles of bad seasons, crashes and fires, broken parts, and broken contracts. Along the way, he’d speak about the people in his life, such as engine-builder Keith Black and NHRA president Wally Parks, and those who were killed in the wild and unpredictable sport of nitro racing. It wouldn’t be only racing, though. Prudhomme would share lessons he learned about business and life from such varied sources as a neighbor in Granada Hills to Ford GT40 driver Dan Gurney. He also would talk about the importance of family: how his wife, Lynn, and daughter, Donna, changed his world and how finding out about his African-American roots opened his eyes to a culture and inheritance he’d always wanted. This is the experience you’ll get in Don "The Snake" Prudhomme: My Life Beyond the 1320.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the adolescent thrill of getting a driver's license to the dreaded commutes of adulthood, from vintage muscle cars to electric vehicles, this groundbreaking book reveals the outsized impact the car has had—and will continue to have—on the lives of women. Since their inception cars have defined American culture, but until quite recently car histories were largely written by and about men—with little attention given to the fascinating story of women and cars. In this engaging non-fiction narrative, Nancy A. Nichols, the daughter of a used car salesman, uses the cars her father sold and the ones her family drove to tell a larger story about how the car helped to define modern womanhood. From her sister’s classic Mustang to her mother’s Chevy Convertible to her own Honda minivan, Nichols tells a personal story in order to shed light on a universal one. Cars helped women secure the right to vote, changed the nature of romance, and influenced both fashion and child rearing customs. In the just over 100 years since their inception, cars have created possibilities for commerce and romance even as they exposed women to new kinds of danger. Women Behind the Wheel explores the uniquely gendered landscape of the automobile, detailing the many reasons why cars are both more expensive and more dangerous for women drivers. The automobile is on the cusp of momentous change. As we advance into the era of electric, connected, and autonomous vehicles, Nichols shows us why we should hit the brakes and look back in the rear-view mirror at this long and fascinating history. What is the role of the car in our lives? Should we be more skeptical of technology in our society? In Women Behind the Wheel, Nichols argues convincingly that only by understanding the many ways the car has changed us, can we hope to prepare ourselves for this brave new era.

Book excerpt: In Christ's love and patience, EYAWTKAAS, after revealing why, corrects and instructs some of the "best" people on the planet (because Jesus has somewhat against them). EYAWTKAAS uncovers by far the largest and most hypocritical cover-up in the history of the Christianity. Far surpassing Sodom and Gomorrah for wickedness is proved and so is the fact that much of the light of the world is in darkness. Because of God's love for marriage/family, He is "pulling the covers." Don't be afraid/embarrassed to go with the author to higher heights in your Savior as he lists the reasons why this "touchy" subject is so hushed up under the steeples, why it persists, why many believers (not all) won't address it and why it must be addressed. Finally there are questions for discussion to help you confront this issue and help to get you in His image.
