A three-year program of instruction, "The Expert Mathematician" uses a software and consumable print materials package with 196 lessons that teach the "Logo" programming language. Each lesson ranges from 40-120 minutes, or one to three class periods. "The Expert Mathematician" coursework combines integrated computer software with workbook activities. A test of unit concepts is administered at the end of each instructional unit. The developer used the computer program "LogoWriter" to develop the curriculum, which covers general mathematics, pre-algebra, and algebra I. The developer describes the curriculum as covering the range of concepts and content areas in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics "Curriculum and Evaluation Standards." The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified only one study on "The Expert Mathematician" that met its evidence standards. The one study included 90 eighth-grade students in a middle school in St. Louis, Missouri. "The Expert Mathematician" was found to have a potentially positive effect on math achievement. This report updates the previous WWC report on "The Expert Mathematician" that was released on the WWC website November 2004. This report includes research from the original review. Dramatically increased federal funding for education and training programs, social security benefits, other income support programs, and a growing economy reduced poverty and raised expectations that income poverty could be eliminated within a generation. Yet the official poverty rate has never fallen below its 1973 level and remains higher than the rates in many other advanced economies. In this book, editors Maria Cancian and Sheldon Danziger and leading poverty researchers assess why the War on Poverty was not won and analyze the most promising strategies to reduce poverty in the twenty-first century economy. Changing Poverty, Changing Policies documents how economic, social, demographic, and public policy changes since the early 1970s have altered who is poor and where antipoverty initiatives have kept pace or fallen behind. Part I shows that little progress has been made in reducing poverty, except among the elderly, in the last three decades. The chapters examine how changing labor market opportunities for less-educated workers have increased their risk of poverty (Rebecca Blank), and how family structure changes (Maria Cancian and Deborah Reed) and immigration have affected poverty (Steven Raphael and Eugene Smolensky). Part II assesses the ways childhood poverty influences adult outcomes. Markus Jäntti finds that poor American children are more likely to be poor adults than are children in many other industrialized countries. Part III focuses on current antipoverty policies and possible alternatives. Jane Waldfogel demonstrates that policies in other countries—such as sick leave, subsidized child care, and schedule flexibility—help low-wage parents better balance work and family responsibilities. Part IV considers how rethinking and redefining poverty might take antipoverty policies in new directions. Mary Jo Bane assesses the politics of poverty since the 1996 welfare reform act. Book excerpt: "DreamBox Learning" is a supplemental online mathematics program that provides adaptive instruction for students in grades K-5 and focuses on number and operations, place value, and number sense. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) identified one study of "DreamBox Learning" that both falls within the scope of the Elementary School Mathematics topic area and meets WWC evidence standards. This study meets standards without reservations and included 557 elementary school students in kindergarten and first grade in three charter schools in San Jose, California. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for "DreamBox Learning" on the math performance of elementary school students to be small for the mathematics achievement domain, the only domain specified in the review protocol. "DreamBox Learning" was found to have potentially positive effects on mathematics achievement for elementary school students. [On February 5, 2014, the WWC modified this report in response to new information provided by the study authors. Following the release of the intervention report on December 10, 2013 (ED544506), the WWC received a request from the study authors for another opportunity to respond to an author query to which the authors had previously not responded. The authors then provided information that the WWC had previously requested--specifically, regression-adjusted impact estimates using the full sample. The authors' original report included regression-adjusted impact estimates only for a sample that excluded students whose outcomes were classified as outliers by the study authors. Based on the new information provided, the review team updated the characterization of the study finding and the intervention rating in this report. The characterization of the study finding changed from "indeterminate effect" to "statistically significant positive effect." The intervention effectiveness rating changed from "no discernible effects" to "potentially positive effects." The WWC has not added studies to the body of evidence or updated the literature search since the December 2013 release of this report.
