Book excerpt: The Sabbath is the only holiday included in the Ten Commandments, and the observance of it has given the Jewish people an opportunity to rest their minds and bodies. The Sabbath is primarily a home oriented occasion, although there are several prayer services that take place in the Synagogue both Friday evening and Saturday morning, afternoon, and evening. There are also a variety of home rituals which are intended to unify the family and add an aura of sanctity to the home. This volume is a user friendly guide to the Sabbath. Topics include: the origin of the Sabbath from biblical times through Temple times; synagogue and home observance, including detailed how-to Shabbat guidelines; a series of games and activities suitable to be played on Shabbat; the Jewish definition of work on the Sabbath; the laws and customs of the Sabbath and their rationale; Shabbat zemirot (table songs) with illustrations; the liturgy of the Sabbath service and commentary on the various specialized prayers for the Sabbath; Sabbath legends; notable quotations related to the Sabbath; the Sabbath in short story, and a glossary of terms and books for further reading.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: REL This new volume in Rabbi Ronald H. Isaacs's 'Every Person's Guide to...' series is precisely what the title claims it to be. It describes not philosophy in its narrow meaning but the general principles of Jewish religion as well as some philosophical issues expressed in the religious writings or derived from the theological doctrines. Notable for its inclusiveness, this work starts from biblical philosophical or para-philosophical ideas and continues in chronological order to explicate the main views of Jewish theologian-philosophers through the ages, right up to Emil Fackenheim. At the end, the basic premises of different branches of Judaism are described, with the notable absence of secular Judaism, political philosophy, and the different factions of Zionism. Several philosophers have been excluded, e.g., Emanuel Levinas and Yehuda Alkalai, though some of the omitted philosophers are included in the 'Glossary of Philosophic Terms.' The book lacks scholarly apparatus, but it can serve as a guide for beginners studying Jewish philosophy and for undergraduates both as an introductory and reference work. Hayim Y. Book excerpt: The food that Jewish people eat is part of our connection to our faith, culture, and history. Not only is Jewish food comforting and delicious, it’s also a link to every facet of Judaism. By learning about and cooking traditional Jewish dishes, we can understand fundamentals such as kashrut, community, and diversity. And Jewish history is so connected to food that one comedian said that the story of Judaism can be condensed into nine words: They tried to kill us. We survived. Let’s eat. Let’s Eat follows the calendar of Jewish holidays to include food from the many different Jewish communities around the world; in doing so, it brings the values that are the foundation of Judaism into focus. It also covers the way these foods have ended up on the Jewish menu and how Jews, as they wandered through the world, have influenced and been influenced by other nations and cuisines. Including over 40 recipes, this delicious review of the role of food in Jewish life offers a lively history alongside the traditions of

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes my experiences being subjected to and living with abuse during my childhood and early adult years in the Lubavitch-Chabad community, in Brooklyn, New York. I discuss the effects this physical, emotional and psychological abuse had on my development and life, which resulted in my leaving this community and lifestyle. When I grew up in this community, the topic of abuse was either denied, or spoken about in whispers. Generally, even if abuse of a child was known, it was not reported to law enforcement, and the child was not protected from further abuse. The topic of reporting such crimes to the law enforcement authorities, for eventual criminal prosecution, is referred to as 'mosur' a term of revilement. Such a person, regardless of the crime(s) committed, is protected by the Jewish community and the victim is forced to face the abuse by himself/herself, without the benefit of communal embrace for resolution. Moreover, Jewish law excoriates a 'mosur' / informer, by exclusion from normative communal membership. These exclusions are embodied in codes of Jewish law which formalizes the process by vilifying the informer. The victim thereby faces a double attack. The first is by the predator, and the second by the code of silence forced upon the victim. The primary focus of this book regards the physical attack I endured at the hands of my mother. She was angered by my non-diligence in religious study motivating her to try to break my arm. I was eight years old at the time. And she was following the actions of another mother who broke the arm of her son for the same perverse reason. this attack was a life changing event. It forced to identify my mother, and others, as persons who represented a great danger to me, necessitating measures that resulted in distance and eventual examination of the fundamentals of this religious life and identity. I describe the other Jewish family that similarly abused a child. Similar to my own circumstance, no investigation or prosecution was ever conducted. I remain convinced other families from these ultra-Orthodox (Charedi) Jewish communities experienced similar, or worse, violence, but such violence was muted and not reported. My father was aware of the attack but did not intervene. I discuss the details of the abuse, as well as its aftermath, and the larger concatenates these events caused in my life. I conclude my narrative by stating that these acts, and especially community refusal to acknowledge and respond, is shameful and indefensible. A few persons reviewed this material prior to publication. While I remain grateful for their comments and recommendations, the publication reflects my own insights and I remain responsible for any errors or oversights.
