Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1851 edition. Excerpt: ... A FEW POPULAR STOVE PLANTS AND THEIR CULTURE. Achtmenes.--Few plants have so rapidly acquired a large portion of favour as this striking family. The roots are small and tuberous, as much like large white maggots as any thing I can think of, and A. coccinea had been cultivated many years under the name of Trevirania coccinea. The plant, it will be recollected, died down every season. The maggot-like tubers were taken up when nearly dry, and generally placed, half a dozen in a pot of the size thirty-two, and, after growing some months, bloomed a small scarlet flower at the base of each leaf: bright as it was, it never was a favourite with me, because the proportion of flower to the foliage was so small; but we have now some splendid varieties with flowers as large as a half-crown piece, and as numerous as the little scarlet ones were. The plants grow finer and are literally covered with bloom, --some of dark purple, others of a rosy purple. A. Longiflora, A. Skinneri, and A. Picta, should be grown. The others I care little about; in fact, all the small flowering ones may be dispensed with, and especially as we are acquiring new varieties of the larger kind every season. They grow best in loam and peat, and, if the loam be from rotted turfs, no dung; if it be plain, put one part loam, one part leaf mould, and two parts peat. Fill the thirty-two-sized pots within an inch and a half of the top, first settling it down by striking the pot on the table; then place about half a dozen of the largest tubers in the soil, and cover them up nearly to the top of the pot. Let this be done in January or February, and place them in the stove anywhere. "When they come up they must be placed in the light--the nearer the better. Befresh them occasionally with...

Book excerpt: Recovered in the mid-1990s from the attic of a Turnbull family descendant, Martha Turnbull's garden diary offers the most extensive surviving first-hand account of nineteenth-century plantation life and gardening in the Deep South. Landscape architecture professor and preservationist Suzanne Turner spent fifteen years transcribing and annotating the original manuscript, making it accessible to twenty-first-century gardening enthusiasts. The resulting dialogue between Turnbull's diary entries and Turner's illuminating notes demonstrates the pivotal role that kitchen and pleasure gardens held in the lives of planter families. In addition, the diary documents the relationship between the mistress and the enslaved whose labor made her vast gardens possible. Turner's exquisite interpretation reveals not only an energetic gardener but also a well-read one, eager to experiment with the newest gardening trends. Illustrated with engravings from period books, journals, and nursery catalogs, Turner's annotations provide the reader with a deeper understanding of American horticultural history. The diary, spanning the years 1836 through 1894, reveals the portrait of a courageous and resilient woman. After the tragic loss of her two sons and husband prior to the Civil War, Martha assumed full responsibility for her family and the plantation. She endured living under siege during the war and persevered during Reconstruction by growing and selling food as a truck farmer. By working daily in her ornamental garden and faithfully maintaining her diary for nearly sixty years, she found the solace and peace to look forward to the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get out in your garden and discover the history hidden in the hedges. Did the Romans have rakes? Did the monks get muddy? Did potatoes seem really, really weird when they arrived on our shores? Drawn from Jenny Uglow's own love for plants, this lively 'potted' history of gardening in Britain takes us on a garden tour from the thorn hedges around prehistoric settlements to the rage for ornamental grasses and 'outdoor rooms' today. Tracking down the ordinary folk who worked the earth - from weeding women to florists - as well as aristocrats and grand designers and famous plant-hunters, A Little History of British Gardening is brought to life by gorgeously vivid illustrations and Uglow's insightful wisdom. Not only dealing with flowery meads, grottoes and vistas, landscapes and ha-has, parks and allotments, Uglow explains, for example, how the Tudors made their curious knots; how housewives used herbs to stop freckles; how the suburbs dug for victory in World War II. With a brief guide to particular historic or evocative gardens open to the public, this is a book to put in your pocket when planning a crisp, winter's day out - but also to read in your armchair with a well-earned glass of red, after a hard day's graft in your own garden. 'Enchanting, stirringly evocative and fascinating' Daily Mail 'This book will be a joy for any gardener' Independent
