Then Ash Mowbray, a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks, comes back to Brewster as a wealthy developer, pushing plans to build a shopping mall on the outskirts of town that will destroy the town square businesses. The town council is split on his proposal, and emotions are running high. Mowbray makes things worse by announcing that he is the real father of the high school athlete Noah Steen, having left Noah's mother, Chelsea, pregnant as a teenager when he fled town after high school. Chelsea and her husband Norman are horrified that Mowbray has publicized that Norman is not Noah's father and afraid that he will steal their beloved son from them. Noah is shocked to learn the truth of his parentage and furious with Mowbray. It's not long before Mowbray turns up murdered with Noah as the prime suspect. Brian and Noah's girlfriend Angie turn to Skeet to find the murderer and save their friend. A YALSA EXCELLENCE IN NONFICTION FINALIST • A KIRKUS BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR Elizebeth Smith Friedman had a rare talent for spotting patterns and solving puzzles. These skills led her to become one of the top cryptanalysts in America during both World War I and World War II. She originally came to code breaking through her love for Shakespeare when she was hired by an eccentric millionaire to prove that Shakespeare's plays had secret messages in them. Within a year, she had learned so much about code breaking that she was a star in the making. She went on to play a major role decoding messages during WWI and WWII and also for the Coast Guard's war against smugglers. Elizebeth and her husband, William, became the top code-breaking team in the US, and she did it all at a time when most women weren't welcome in the workforce. Amy Butler Greenfield is an award-winning historian and novelist who aims to shed light on this female pioneer of the STEM community.

Book excerpt: Fear, the most powerful force in our life, is the least understood. Every one of us experiences it. Many arrange their lives to avoid it. Yet nearly every one of us needs to find more fear. Most of us know fear as the unwanted force that drives phobias, anxieties, unhappiness, and inhibits self-actualization. Ironically, fear is the underlying phenomenon that heightens awareness and optimizes physical performance, and can drive ambition, courage, and success. Harnessing fear can heighten emotional intelligence and bring success to every aspect of your life. Neuroscience and current research on how the brain processes and uses fear have torn the lid off the possibilities of human performance; yet most people are not reaching their complete potential because of a psychological roadblock Sweeney calls the Fear Frontier. Identifying your Fear Frontier and addressing it, Sweeney illustrates in these pages, is the path to success, happiness and fulfillment in almost all aspects of your life. He also provides the most effective steps toward rewiring your mind for a healthier longer life based on courage. Fear is Fuel is a practical guide that instructs readers on a unique path toward translating fear into optimal living. By facing fears, and challenging new ones, readers can harness the power of unique motivations to achieve more, experience more, and enjoy more. The path to a fulfilling life is not to avoid fear but to recognize it, understand it, harness it, and unleash its power.

Book excerpt: The hidden brain is the voice in our ear when we make the most important decisions in our lives—but we’re never aware of it. The hidden brain decides whom we fall in love with and whom we hate. It tells us to vote for the white candidate and convict the dark-skinned defendant, to hire the thin woman but pay her less than the man doing the same job. It can direct us to safety when disaster strikes and move us to extraordinary acts of altruism. But it can also be manipulated to turn an ordinary person into a suicide terrorist or a group of bystanders into a mob. In a series of compulsively readable narratives, Shankar Vedantam journeys through the latest discoveries in neuroscience, psychology, and behavioral science to uncover the darkest corner of our minds and its decisive impact on the choices we make as individuals and as a society. Filled with fascinating characters, dramatic storytelling, and cutting-edge science, this is an engrossing exploration of the secrets our brains keep from us—and how they are revealed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Book of Habakkuk, God answers a question asked of by the prophet by saying the following, "And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it" (Habakkuk 2:2). The reason that so many people, both believers and nonbelievers, are in the conditions they are in is because they have allowed themselves to "lose" the vision, especially the vision of our coming of the Lord Jesus. They have all owed themselves to be "blinded" by the "things" of this world. The apostle Paul stated it like this: "In whom the God of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine until them . . ." (2 Corinthians 4:4) We live in a society that is full of hate, violence, destruction, wars, and rumors of wars, discrimination, prejudice, racism, poverty, atheism, no reverence for God for God at all, no fear of God Almighty. The Bible lets us know: "The fool hath said in his heart; There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good" (Psalm 14:1). The reason so many people, both believers and nonbelievers, have "lost the vision" is because they are not "seeking the after God," "they are not turning from their wicked ways." This is the reason District Elder Ronald Gene Oliver put together this book, My Thoughts, not only to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ, but to let people who have feelings of "no hope" that "God is still alive" and that "he is still on the throne and in control" regardless of all the negativity that exists in the world. As has been stated before, this book is not about fiction; it is not a novel or a group of short stories. It is an "anthology,"""i.e., a group of writings on various subjects having been preached, taught, and presented at different Bible classes, church revivals, seminars, workshops, conferences over a span of thirty-plus years under the divine inspiration of God's Holy Spirit and impressed upon the heart of this author to put together in writing to touch the "heart" and "soul" whomever is the reader.

Book excerpt: Preeminent psychologist Lisa Barrett lays out how the brain constructs emotions in a way that could revolutionize psychology, health care, the legal system, and our understanding of the human mind. “Fascinating . . . A thought-provoking journey into emotion science.”—The Wall Street Journal “A singular book, remarkable for the freshness of its ideas and the boldness and clarity with which they are presented.”—Scientific American “A brilliant and original book on the science of emotion, by the deepest thinker about this topic since Darwin.”—Daniel Gilbert, best-selling author of Stumbling on Happiness The science of emotion is in the midst of a revolution on par with the discovery of relativity in physics and natural selection in biology. Leading the charge is psychologist and neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett, whose research overturns the long-standing belief that emotions are automatic, universal, and hardwired in different brain regions. Instead, Barrett shows, we construct each instance of emotion through a unique interplay of brain, body, and culture. A lucid report from the cutting edge of emotion science, How Emotions Are Made reveals the profound real-world consequences of this breakthrough for everything from neuroscience and medicine to the legal system and even national security, laying bare the immense implications of our latest and most intimate scientific revolution.

In other words, do we have a reverential awe of the Most High God? As Christians, a positive response comes easily, but our true answer is always reflected in our choices. This is not a legalistic or works-based theology. Instead, its an authentic, heartfelt, crazy in love faith response to Christ Himself. Led by the Spirit, Michele challenges us to ask some hard questions. Are we willing to uncompromisingly obey the Word of God at all costs? Will we follow the Holy Spirit no matter where He leads? Do our words say Yes while our choices scream No? This message is a wake-up call for the church. Its time we choose commitment over complacency, action over apathy and passion over passivity. Allow the Spirit to use this anointed, inspired book to spark in you a reverent fear of Almighty God. Refuse to live a single day as a lukewarm Christian. Be willing to make choices with eternal significance...and be ready to turn your world upside down for Jesus! Lori Jonas Womens Minister Church of the Harvest, Olathe KS
