Book Synopsis Law, Morality, and Abolitionism by : Matthew Hill
Download or read book Law, Morality, and Abolitionism written by Matthew Hill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1830s the abolitionist movement in the United States refashioned itself under new leadership which was determined to bring slavery to an immediate end. Too often written off by northern and southern opinion-makers alike as fanatics who threatened the social and economic order in America, they struggled in the face of both secular and religious defenders of the institution of slavery. Into this fray stepped Francis Wayland (1796–1865), a leading educator, noted author of textbooks on moral philosophy and economics, and longtime president of Brown University. Initially a moderate on slavery, Wayland with near equal fervor both denounced slavery as sinful and yet countenanced caution in respecting the laws that protected the institution. Like so many of his generation, the flow of events moved him toward Unionism and forced him to confront the logic of his own moral arguments. If slavery was indeed a violation of natural rights, how then could he not act on behalf of those who could not speak for themselves? This work explores his journey.
Book Synopsis A Century of Student Movements in China by : Xiaobing Li
Download or read book A Century of Student Movements in China written by Xiaobing Li and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors offer their unique perspectives on the important roles Chinese students and intellectuals played in the shaping of the twentieth-century China. Their answers to these pivotal questions explore new nationalistic spirit, modern world-views, and willingness of self-sacrifice, which had attributed to the spontaneous actions of the students as a “New Culture” emerged during the May Fourth Movement. These articles show how China nurtured these spontaneous student movements, even though the Nationalist Party in the Republic of China and the Communist Party in the People’s Republic had exerted tight control over schools. Both governments established organizations as well as operations among students that effectively turned some of the student movements into a political instrument by the parties for their own agenda.
Book Synopsis Sovereignty: Seventeenth-Century England and the Making of the Modern Political Imaginary by : Feisal G. Mohamed
Download or read book Sovereignty: Seventeenth-Century England and the Making of the Modern Political Imaginary written by Feisal G. Mohamed and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-02 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that sovereignty is the first-order question of political order, and that seventeenth-century England provides an important case study in the roots of its modern iterations. It offers fresh readings of Thomas Hobbes, John Milton, and Andrew Marvell, as well as lesser-known figures and literary texts. In addition to political philosophy and literary studies, it also takes account of the period's legal history, exploring the exercise of the crown's feudal rights in the Court of Wards and Liveries, debates over habeas rights, and contests of various courts over jurisdiction. Theorizing sovereignty in a way that points forward to later modernity, the book also offers a sustained critique of the writings of Carl Schmitt, the twentieth century's most influential, if also most controversial, thinker on this topic.

Download or read book Crime of the Century written by Angie Moon and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2024-03-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crime of the Century is a comprehensive book about classic rock’s connections to true crime cases with over twenty true stories of classic rock musicians and their encounters with murderers, and musicians who committed murders. Inside the book you’ll find the most famous stories like how The Beach Boys met Charles Manson and how Phil Spector went from legendary producer to convicted murderer. There are stories of how classic rockers encountered some of the most notorious serial killers like The Kinks meeting John Wayne Gacy on their 1965 American tour and Debbie Harry allegedly getting into Ted Bundy’s car in the early 70s. You’ll see how the Manson Family’s classic rock connections run deeper than you thought with their encounters with Neil Young, John Phillips, Tony Valentino, Phil Ochs, and Frank Zappa. You’ll also learn how classic rockers were only a few degrees of separation from presidential assassinations and attempted assassinations like The Band meeting Jack Ruby, Squeaky Fromme pursuing Jimmy Page, and John Hinckley’s encounter with DEVO and how they used the poem he wrote for Jodie Foster as song lyrics. It’s a wild and crazy ride through classic rock history. But believe it or not, these are all true stories.
