A winner!" - Parris Afton Bonds, Co-Founder of Romance Writers of America, New York Times-bestselling and Namesake of the Parris Award "A gritty, bone-deep story of a tortured and traumatized little girl, rising from the ashes like a phoenix to become a healthy and healed woman, who is a force to be reckoned with. This tale will break your heart, dragging you through the ugly world of abject abuse, and just when you think you can't bear another page, it'll flood your senses with hope, truth and love. Grab your tissue box and a glass of wine - you're going to need it for this grim, but inspiring, journey of triumph." - Summer Prescott, Publisher and Bestselling author of The INNcredibly Sweet Series Businesswoman, Entrepreneur, and dynamic Author, Diane Morasco, shares her knowledge, insight, and personal journey in her hard-hitting debut novel, "Even Tough Women Can Crack Like Eggs Sometimes." At the age of eight, a few days after her maternal grandmother's passing, her mother struck her face continually shouting she wished she had never been born. A short year later, at the tender age of nine, her uncle, a police officer, began sexually abusing her. It was this monstrous battering and lethal asphyxiation of her soul that caused something powerful to rise up within her and cry out for justice - the kind of justice that only comes from a life well lived. Though the road was more than rocky, and filled with dangerous pitfalls in childhood and well beyond, Diane Morasco wouldn't change the expressway through hell that she was destined to travel to get to where she is today. The accomplished and secure businesswoman was blessed with having three "earth angels" who set her on her journey of healing and redemption. The first angel saved her life, the second angel breathed life into her and the third angel showed her just how precious her life is. "I did not make it through the darkness - I set a blaze to light my way out." - Diane Morasco

Book excerpt: While many claim that being a mom is the most important job in the world, in reality motherhood in the United States is becoming harder. From preconception, through pregnancy, and while parenting, women are held to ever-higher standards and are finding themselves punished – both socially and criminally – for failing to live up to these norms. This book uncovers how women of all ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses have been interrogated, held against their will, and jailed for a rapidly expanding list of offenses such as falling down the stairs while pregnant or letting a child spend time alone in a park, actions that were not considered criminal a generation ago. While poor mothers and moms of color are targeted the most, all moms are in jeopardy, whether they realize it or not. Women and mothers are disproportionately held accountable compared to men and fathers who do not see their reproduction policed and almost never incur charges for “failure to protect.” The gendered inequality of prosecutions reveals them to be more about controlling women than protecting children. Using a reproductive justice lens, Caitlin Killian analyzes how and why mothers are on a precipice and what must change to prevent mass penalization and instead support mothers and their children.

Book excerpt: Southern Women is a unique look at life-changing events through the first-person accounts of a teen-ager, a mom and a Greek goddess. Yes, a Greek goddess. The book takes off right away with the teen, who is born to Egg Donor. It is a hard look at an abused child, the abuses are unimaginable acts upon the child and the description of them is hard and graphic. She details her struggles growing up, after being adopted by a loving Mom and the trials and tribulations of staying one or two steps ahead of Egg Donor, who is essentially selling the child to men for their sexual and abusive pleasure. The teen, who has a disability, and Mom also have a hard time finding schools and friends willing to accept her. It is an eye-opening chronicle of the failings and successes. Then, during the aftermath of the April 27th storms we are taken on a side trip visit with the Greek goddess Athena who shares a unique view of the world from Mount Olympus. Obviously, this isnt a true first person experience but it is an entertaining and educational look at religion. Throughout it all there is an additional woven entanglement with political principles and also nationality. To close, although it was not expected to be shared, we are literally driven into the tornadoes that struck North Alabama on April 27, 2011. We experience the storms impact first-hand and the devastation it inflicted on people and property. We stay with this teen and her mother and all the other children together in a friends home because they could not reach their home because of the blocked roads and loss of utilities, including limited supplies of food and fuel. The stories are enthralling and personal. And, chances are, you may relate to the circumstances or know someone who does.

Book excerpt: From the author of How Should a Person Be? (“one of the most talked-about books of the year”—Time Magazine) and the New York Times Bestseller Women in Clothes comes a daring novel about whether to have children. In Motherhood, Sheila Heti asks what is gained and what is lost when a woman becomes a mother, treating the most consequential decision of early adulthood with the candor, originality, and humor that have won Heti international acclaim and made How Should A Person Be? required reading for a generation. In her late thirties, when her friends are asking when they will become mothers, the narrator of Heti’s intimate and urgent novel considers whether she will do so at all. In a narrative spanning several years, casting among the influence of her peers, partner, and her duties to her forbearers, she struggles to make a wise and moral choice. After seeking guidance from philosophy, her body, mysticism, and chance, she discovers her answer much closer to home. Motherhood is a courageous, keenly felt, and starkly original novel that will surely spark lively conversations about womanhood, parenthood, and about how—and for whom—to live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural women comprised the largest part of the adult population of Texas until 1940 and in the American South until 1960. On the cotton farms of Central Texas, women's labor was essential. In addition to working untold hours in the fields, women shouldered most family responsibilities: keeping house, sewing clothing, cultivating and cooking food, and bearing and raising children. But despite their contributions to the southern agricultural economy, rural women's stories have remained largely untold. Using oral history interviews and written memoirs, Rebecca Sharpless weaves a moving account of women's lives on Texas cotton farms. She examines how women from varying ethnic backgrounds--German, Czech, African American, Mexican, and Anglo-American--coped with difficult circumstances. The food they cooked, the houses they kept, the ways in which they balanced field work with housework, all yield insights into the twentieth-century South. And though rural women's lives were filled with routines, many of which were undone almost as soon as they were done, each of their actions was laden with importance, says Sharpless, for the welfare of a woman's entire family depended heavily upon her efforts.
